Halloween In Nebraska: A MapQuest Guide

From zombie parades and costume contests to haunted houses and hayrides (to haunted anything!), the Halloween season casts its spell and awakens our inner ghouls and goblins. As part of FrightQuest -- a MapQuest series on spooky destinations and activities -- here are three options to celebrate Halloween in Nebraska that are sure to be a scream.
— John Csiszar

Scary Acres

Scary Acres is a collection of three haunted Omaha, Nebraska, attractions that make visitors tremble every Halloween season. The Haunted Woods joined the popular Master's Castle and the House on the Hill in 2011 to give revelers a third way to get their fright on at Scary Acres. In addition to the attractions, the park offers a bonfire area and concession stands. Tickets can be purchased individually, or patrons can take advantage of a discount by buying the super combo, which provides admission to all three attractions.

Savin' Sokol Halloween Festival

The Savin' Sokol Halloween Festival offers a wide range of Halloween entertainment at the end of October in Crete, Nebraska. The three-day festival is suitable for all ages and includes a 5K road race, a "hayrack ride," street dance and a paintball-shooting gallery. For older guests, two haunted houses, the Bone Shaker and Terror on 12th Street, open at the beginning of October and include haunting voices, futuristic landscapes and adult language. Also, for laughs, keep an eye out for the Miss Zombie USA pageant, part of which includes the "funeral wear competition." The entrance fee for each house is $10 ($15 with a combo pass).

Halloween At The Omaha Zoo

The Omaha Zoo in Nebraska offers two family-oriented events for the Halloween season. In mid-October, the Zoo's Haunted Safari allows children and adults to enjoy a guided hike among illuminated jack-o'-lanterns in the Wildlife Safari Park, followed by dinner and roasted marshmallows around a roaring fire. The end-of-October Spooktacular offers Halloween-themed activities, including trick-or-treating, a terror-train ride, flying bats and plenty of good eats. Children are admitted free with a paying adult.
