Oregon Uniforms: Ducks Retro Football Uniform And Nike Designs Over The Years (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 10/06/11 07:47 PM ET   Updated: 12/06/11 05:12 AM ET

There are some schools whose simple uniforms are staples of their program. If a college football fan were watch to a game dating back fifty years ago, they'd still be able to recognize Notre Dame's traditional dark blue garb and gold helmet.

The University of Oregon is not one of those schools (and for the record, neither is Maryland).

In 1996, Oregon began letting Nike design their uniforms. While outfits briefly maintained a relatively generic look, it wasn't long before Phil Knight's design minions began stretching the very limits of the colors gold and green.

Today, Oregon's uniforms are arguably the most divisive outfits in sports. Some people love them, some people hate them, and some people make their judgement depending on the week. The reason for this is because Nike has hundreds of possible uniform combinations that the school can wear for any given game.

Among these combinations are the timeless all white uniforms sported by many universities, and the "how do I turn the brightness down on my TV" yellow tops that the squad wore earlier this season against Nevada.

The defending Pac 12 champions will face off against California on Thursday night wearing what they call "retro-inspired" uniforms in homage to a time when their outfits borrowed more from Donald Duck than they did from the movie Tron.

We decided it would be fun to take a look at the evolution of Oregon's football uniforms since they signed on with Nike. Feel free to pan the ones you dislike and support your favorites, because either way, you likely won't see that same style of uniform ever again.

The present football uniforms of UO are totally unrepresentative of the college's colors. Please let the alums know how that horrid decision was made.

I love my Ducks, I love my Ducks!! Just that there is something here on HuffPo has taken the program to a new level. Whether you love their unis or not, you're talking about 'em!! It's all about recruiting & not us old folks. It's about the kids. Goooo Ducks!!

Nobody cares about Oregon or their uniforms anymore. So what.

I'm old enough to unfortunately remember watching the Houston Astros (rainbows!) play the San Diego Padres (Taco Bell!) in the 70's. Wow....they both made all of these uni's look great. Two of the worst ever.

Nope...do not like the Ducks uniforms. Also, the uniforms the Terps (Maryland) wore in the first game looked like an afterthought (mainly the helmets).. While I'm at, I have a difficult time watching a home game of Boise State...I can't take that blue field.

Me either. Blue fields should not be allowed.

Who cares what they wear as long as they win? All this talk of how ugly they are just gives them more time in the public eye. It's doing its job.
02:40 PM on 10/08/2011
Nobody cares. They can't beat the SEC so they shouldn't even be ranked.

3-2 against the SEC in the BCS era. You know Tennessee couldn't beat 9th pace UCLA two years in a row, right?

That uniform they wore in the BCS game last year has served as an inspiration for many of my projects...probably the most beautiful color combinations and detailing I have seen in years....I have ZERO allegiance to that team but the gray helmet with the neon green-ish O is my wallpaper...

And that was the only nice uni in the slideshow.

True, but what they do while wearing them is beautiful. I'm U of O grad, so sue me. :-) We spent a lot more years in the wilderness than we have in the spotlight.

Fair enough and Maryland's make yours look almost traditional by comparison

Photo #2 is Washington, not Oregon State. Pretty big difference in color schemes; purple and gold vs. orange and black.

They can spend all that money on uniforms but won't pay the players...
01:10 PM on 10/07/2011
they have the opportunity to earn a degree and come out of college free of debt, don't cry for the players

The are called student-atheltes and they receive a free education for their effort. If you want to pay them then start a semi-pro league and have them give up their college scholarships. They are in school to learn not to earn. If this is the case, throw out ALL the scholarships (a isnomer anyway as most pf the players ARE NOT scholars), and pick amongst those attending school that are paying their ownway to be there. 'Nuff said.

If they are truly students, then cut back practice time, allow them to get jobs like other students on scholarship.

BTW, why do you think most people go to college? And would you fault an engineer, computer tech, musicain or other "full-ride" student who made extra money? No, you would not.

Nuff sed.

Not all the players get scholarships. My nephew was a walk on, did get some playing time and about a year's worth of scholarship help. But, all that eligiblity helped him finish grad school and get his CPA.
