Steve explains that Apple never intended to build the iPhone. Instead, Jobs and his engineers set out initially to build a tablet PC. But Jobs told Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at AllThingsD's d8 conference in 2010 that he was inspired to go down a different path after he began playing with the user interface on the prototype tablet. "I thought, 'My god, we can build a phone out of this," he said. "And I put the tablet project on the shelf because the phone was more important."

What is remarkably sad to me is that his genius remained in this one small area of entertainment. After all, the average human isn't using his computer to actually compute data streams. I wonder what he might have accomplished in other areas such as healthcare. His vision against cancer and cancer might be gone. He will be missed.

it's a shame he could have done so much - put an end to his products being made byslavelabor - admit he had AIDS and become an advocate - given all the tech away for posterity - what a shame - not the way to go

Steve Jobs apparently wasn't just a technology visionary. This commercial from 1983 shows a dog (a pit bull, no less) going to work with his owner, years before businesses started becoming dog friendly: http://www.ilovedogs.com/2011/10/steve-jobs-dog-friendly-visionary/

Sure, Jobs missed on some things, mostly when he was too far ahead of the curve (Newton anyone?). But when he was right, boy was he right. Looking back at that 2007 CNBC interview, it's almost comical how much the interviewer was underestimating the impact the new iPhone would have. Of course, he had no way of knowing. And we don't really have any way of knowing how sure Jobs was about this new product. But in hindsight, it looks like the guy is asking whether the wheel or fire would be important.
