Steve Jobs Narrates Unaired 'Think Different' Commercial (VIDEO)

The Crazy Ones

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/06/11 12:38 PM ET Updated: 12/06/11 05:12 AM ET

Steve Jobs was not just another member of the crowd.

After enrolling at Reed College in 1972, he dropped out after only one semesterand, two years later, quit one of his first jobs to backpack around India. He also experimented with LSD and revered Bob Dylan.

In 1997, advertising agency TBWA/Chiat/Day created Apple's "Think Different" ad campaign, which almost sounds like the title of a biography of the Apple co-founder. The ad series debuted with a television commercial September 28, 1997, featuring Richard Dreyfus reading a poem called "Here's To The Crazy Ones" while images of famous rebels like Amelia Earhart, Gandhi, and John Lennon flash onscreen.

Steve Jobs himself even narrated one of the "Think Different" commercials, albeit an unaired one.

Take a look at Jobs' toast to "the crazy ones" in the video (below), courtesy of 9to5Mac.

Yet I don't think Ghandi would have sued anyone who tried to steal his idea of peace. :)

I am not sure what you mean. I think the concept and goal of peace is different from the actual brain workings of idea, creativity, invention, technology, which belong to the person who had them, whereas peace is something everyone can own and promote. A person's inventions are protected by patents for a reason.

How sad that someone with seemingly good ideals early in life became one of the largest examples of unfair labor practices in the world

I'm sure Gandhiji would have appreciated appearing in an ad for items that the poorest Indians could never afford. That was, of course, the stand by which he chose what he could and could not consume in his own life.

Ghandi would have probably valued the gift of global communication that these items created. It has been reported that almost all youth in India own an i phone; that Jobs is revered in India because of his creations and his mind and what he has done with his life. If Ghandi were still alive, he was so committed to his ideals that he would have used every modern method to help him achieve his goals and would probably have been gifted with the latest gadgets by Job to help him accomplish his goals.

Nope. Got Gandhiji completely wrong, including how to spell his name even when it was right in front of you.

"the gift of global communication that these items created"

Right. There were no cell phones before Apple's. ** rolls eyes **

"It has been reported that almost all youth in India own an i phone"

You have no clue as to how poor most Indians are if you can say nonsense like this.

"If Ghandi were still alive, he was so committed to his ideals that he would have used every modern method to help him achieve his goals"

Gandhi never even flew in his life because the average Indian couldn't afford to. Third class trains were what he used.

Next time try knowing what you're talking about before you post.

Nice ad. Still sounds more like a political one, although I do not think that any party can relate to those magnificent people

The one that appeared on TV was voiced over by Richard Dreyfuss.

I have only an ipod. That is the extent of my "I-ness". Yet, I greatly admire the genius of Steve Jobs. He was an incredibly visionary, insightful man. He didn't think outside the box - for him there was no box.

Much, much better than the Dreyfuss one!

I noticed that Rupert Murdoch was missing from that list. In fact I didn't see Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, Grover Norquist, Glenn Beck, Ted Nugent, Michael Savage, Joseph Farrah, Pamela Geller, Vice President Dick Cheney, Chief Justice Clarence Thomas or Abraham Lincoln. Just a lot of big mouth libs. Why was that?
10:47 PM on 10/06/2011
With exception of Lincoln and maybe Thomas, the rest of your list is full of some of the biggest idiots and simpletons this country has to offer.

Thomas compared with ML King and Gandhi? Are you kidding me?

Nice ad. And I have to agree that Mac products just feel good and are fun to use and last well. Too bad that is "different".

The think ad was one of my favorite ads. Steve Jobs, what can I say, the man had IT.

You will be missed.

Say what you will about Steve Jobs as a business man . But he took a failing company and gave it life for one . He also changed the way we get our music , books , and a list to long to mention . He made a product that was alot more stable then the others , and that might be because of business practice . I have both PC's and Mac's and I can tell you Mac's are way better . I feel he will be missed for his vision . To say I am going to cry as most of the phoneis are saying well no . I never met the man , but I do feel for his family and there loss . That is what makes us human . And he can becompared to all the people that was shown in the video . He has made it easier for all to connect across all divides . Again we are all human and have the same fears . Being able to connect with someone that you once feared for no real reason is one step to making this a better planet .

Once in a 100 million lifetimes do you get a visionary like Steve Jobs. I was not a fan of Apples business tatics. I understand the impact Steve had on the world.

Patrick2574.... You couldn't be more wrong on your look at Steve Jobs. He started Apple and was ousted. Apple almost went out of business because of their decision. Then he started Next Computer and Pixar. Again showing the visionary that he was. Apple had to reach out to Jobs becuase of their lack of vision. Apple will have the same problem in the future.

You may not like his business tactics but you have to recognize his talent and vision.

Jobs was a business man. I believe Patrick made a good point. He was not hating on Jobs. He was just saying what he was a businessman.
11:32 PM on 10/06/2011
Saying Steve Jobs was a business man is like saying Abraham Lincoln had a nice beard. Its true, but the man was a little more than that.
04:38 PM on 10/07/2011
Jobs was a businessman because of the vsionary products he and his team developed. Without those he would just be another worker.
