"The Root" released their annual "100 List", of the 100 most influential African Americans in 2011. The list included some media powerhouses in television, print and online journalism.

"The Root" considered individuals between the ages of 25 and 45. The magazine took a mathematical approach, and actually created a formula that measured an individual's substance and influence. They looked for people who shape daily conversations and whose work influences many people on a daily basis. The magazine even tallied media mentions, the number of Google searches, and twitter followers.
