www.cnn.com:

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Undocumented immigrant students in California will be able to receive state-funded financial aid in 2013 to attend college under a new law signed Saturday by Gov. Jerry Brown.

The law allows top students who are on a path to citizenship to apply and receive the state aid, the governor said.

About 2,500 students are projected to receive Cal Grants totaling $14.5 million, according to the California Department of Finance. That averages out to $5,800 per student.

One hurdle is the financial aid application process, which involves a federal form used for both state and federal awards that requires a Social Security or taxpayer identification number. Another potential issue for illegal immigrants is the requirement to produce evidence of income, such as tax returns. Michel said the state would need to come up with a different process for them.

Jerry Brown is a true leader. He's done what is right in spite of the political pressure and all those that are against this action. My husband and I will support Jerry Brown with our votes and our prayers because he's a true leader. I may not agree with everything that he does, but I know that every action has been thoughtfully studied and prayed about by Jerry Brown. Thank you, Jerry Brown for being a true leader.

This is great news!

Hopefully, all the illegals in Arizona will move to California and become their problem.

Let's ask the native Americans how they feel about uncontrolled immigration. I'm sure they'll give us an accurate perception :( America cannot afford anymore aliens period.

While I believe that everyone deserves equal opportunity, I must disagree with this law. How are we funding education for ILLEGAL immigrants while we cut funding for public education for grades K-12. Our schools are ranked 30th in the nation and 43rd in per-student spending. California schools are not funded with local revenues they are funded with state taxes which most illegal immigrants, do not pay. It has become increasingly difficult for LEGAL residents of California to get financial aid for college; so, how can we justify spending money that the state doesn't have on financial aid for ILLEGAL immigrants?
02:14 PM on 10/10/2011
These students are willingly to pay taxes just like every undocumented immigrant here. They wouldn't mind paying taxes if it was given the opportunity to them and if anything their tuition despite the fact that they would be eligible for financial aid, it would be at a much higher cost.

How is an ILLEGAL immigrant eligible for financial aid? They are here illegally so, how are the entitiled to financial aid. I support human rights for ALL people, including illegal immigrants but, again, I cannot support funding the college education of people that are in this country illegally while we have cut educational funding for LEGAL American children and our schools are ranked 30th in the country.

I'm sure that everyone involved are pleased with themselves, but they don't realize that this act of generosity sets the stage for California becoming America's Quebec.
05:31 PM on 10/10/2011
Good, maybe California will be known as the land of opportunity since America no longer is.

The Governor needs to get the public to go along with tax increases... by signing the Dream Act, he just made that harder. If the state has enough money to give it away to foreigners here illegally, they do not need more taxes.

The reason Democrats need to tax working people is to "create jobs" lost to their globalization policies: amnesty, NAFTA, H-1b, and free trade with communist China.

Amnesty, passed under Ronald Reagan, Nov. 1986. Congress at that time: Senate controlled by Rs, House controlled by Dems.
NAFTA, ratified under Clinton in 1994, had been in the works since 1986 (Reagan again) and the wording finalized and ceremonially (pre-ratification) signed by George HW Bush. More Reps than Dems voted for it in BOTH houses of congress, and the only reason Clinton and Dems supported it was that two major pieces were added from what Bush originally negotiated: one part to protect the environment and one part to protect American workers....Bush wanted to give away the whole farm.

So, now, how is either a Dem globalization policy?
09:54 PM on 10/09/2011
It is the Republicans and the Dems both who have pursued globalization for the sole benefit of the elite, and non enforcment of our immigration laws, and amnesty, and NAFTA and H-1b and American job killing free trade agreements.

Both parties are dancing to Wall Streets tune and have screwed the working and middle class.

Both parties have given tax subsidies and breaks to the rich, and dumped the cost of the wars and our infastructure and our social benefits on to the working and middle class.

11:36 PM on 10/09/2011
Maybe or maybe not. But low skilled workers take more out of the economy than they put in. So higher skilled Americans subsidize lower skilled Americans and that is okay. That is how society is suppose to work. But we should not have to subisidize foreigners here illlegally.

Legislation reflects the will of the people as presented through the Congressional Reps they employ. Thinking your Governor has much to say or do about legislation is either denial, naivety or intended deception. Sure, he/she has the power to veto or approve legislation but considering the Governor the primary or key proponent or opponent is unwise, unless your idea of legislative management is chasing the horse after it escapes the barn. When will the Press work the story so that those that author and co-author as well as vote for or against legislation become the point of understanding. Transparency starts with a Press willing to work, rather than carp, copy or capitulate? Will the Press ever wake up to the stark reality that their relevance is shrinking faster than land-based phones. Anyone seen a real Public Phone Booth lately?

I have never been more proud to be a Californian.
03:31 PM on 10/10/2011
How can you be a Californian if your perspectives don't respect the state's own sovereignty? A more accurate portrayal of your position would be that you have never been more proud that a sovereign government has effectively ended its own sovereignty by granting the same set of POSITIVE "rights" as those who live within the effected region.

let them become citizens then. Why must our society be so closed that people have to be persecuted if they don't have a stamp on their head that says American. There is nothing in place to let them become citizens, even if they marry a citizen, and it makes no sense to send them back to Mexico when they were raised here and know nothing about Mexico.

It's a horrible day for California tax payers as they shoulder more of Mexico's and Central American's burdens without a vote or opportunity to be heard.
05:39 PM on 10/10/2011
I'm Californian, I'll gladly pay for taxes to allow those who are being unjustly persecuted to be given some kind of rights. They were raised here and their heart is American, telling them to go back to Mexico makes no sense.

Maybe those kids on Wall Street and others who have big student loans should complain that illegal aliens, non-citizens, are getting 5800 a year of tax payer money. The Democratic trough is never empty, at least until the California economy collapses.
05:40 PM on 10/10/2011
If they can afford to waste time on Wall Street, then they don't need more money.
04:34 PM on 10/09/2011
For some reasons I am starting to believe that california is not broke but made to believe we are broke so we can be milked by enormous taxing by our corporate vote pandering polititians. I can hear the increasing sucking machine draining our taxes for their personal gain for their free ride for votes on tax payers money. You just don't blow 14.5 million dollars if ya don't have it! Legal american students up to their necks in debt that now have to compete with freeloaders taking away education and jobs from legal citizens. This is discrimination to the legal citizen of the united states.

If they are up to their necks in debt then it's their own fault. I worked my way through college, no loans, no financial aid. What people really need is an education in handling personal finances.

BULL. They take all the money they earn and ship it over to Mom and Pop back into Mexico. The money is then funneled through the Mexican system. The money never gets taxed period.
