Good Magazine:

Urban Outfitters has certainly been in the spotlight lately. Stevie Koerner was added to the long line of artists claiming the chain lifted their designs without giving them credit. Twitter then exploded with Outfitter haters.

Even Miley Cyrus jumped on the bandwagon, tweeting, “Love that everybody is hating on Urban Outfitters…. Not only do they steal from artists but every time you give them money you help finance a campaign against gay equality. #SHADYASHELL.”

First, muahhha to Miley Cyrus for her strength to stand up to this. IMO it still a risk for straight celibrities who are in the beginning or in the middle of their career. So a HUGE thakn you to Miley and Lady Ga Ga, and every other artist who use their platform to advocate for Equality.
SEcond this is a great article, beyond the headline. If you didn't read the whole thing, please do.

I like the conclusion of this article: corporations should be more transparent about their political donations, so we can decide whether we want to spend out money on the products, and thus indirectly support their political activities. But I doubt if anything's likely to happen. For now, we have to rely on word of mouth --- such as Miley's Twitter and this article --- to expose the bigots for who they are.

Of course, shopping at Goodwill Industries and flea markets takes a lot of the politics out of the purchase, I suppose ...

Fave'd for the thrift store comment - I'm not exaggerating when I say that about 80% of the furnishings/decorations/etc in my home are second-hand. Thrift stores, yard sales, even some curb-side finds (including a 1930s bar cart made of brass and wood that sells for about $700!). Saves me money, takes the politics out of shopping, often supports great causes (the Boys and Girls clud shop and the local Human Society thrift store are two of my favorites!), and it works for me since I adore mid-century style. :)

My ex-partner, with whom I'm still friends, makes about $75,000 through his work as a college professor and related incomes. He brags that he NEVER shops at retail stores unless they're having a sale and he's already determined that he can't find a similar item at Goodwill, a thrift shop, a yard sale, or a flea market. He's already planning his epitaph for his headstone: "He made a dollar holler."
