Occupy Wall Street: Jeff Magnum, Talib Kweli, Anti-Flag And The Music Of Zucotti Park (VIDEOS)

First Posted: 10/10/2011 3:52 pm   Updated: 12/10/2011 4:12 am

There is no amplification allowed in Zucotti Park, home of the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York. It's why protesters have to use "the people's microphone"— the effective, albeit grating, method of repeating every phrase uttered by speakers so that everyone can hear— and it's why famous musicians, when they stop by to show support, are playing some intimate acoustic sets.

True, Radiohead never showed up, but Jeff Magnum, Talib Kweli, Anti-Flag, Immortal Technique and Michael Franti, all musicians that would likely play to sell-out crowds at some of New York's best venues, have performed in Zucotti. Protesters gather around close, record the performance on their iPhones and sometimes even sing-along.

This is getting ridiculous. Does this movement actually have a point to make and a goal in mind or is this just a weeks long festival.

Funny that the percentages are almost identical as 1922.

I'm not familiar w/ these bands (too old? out of the loop?)Anyway Immortal's rap definetly spoke to the frustrations of the protesters. We need a voice in the musical community to rise up.The 60's had Dylan,Baez,They helped enlighten the youth to the atrocities of the times. I feel presently there is much that's the same. The problems might be different but change has to happen.

Go down and talk to the protesters before making judgments. The 60s movement was, indeed, co-opted. This movement cant be co-opted so easily because all politicians -- all of them -- are owned by Wall Street

With a name like moccasinmike I would figure you would be one of the enlightened losers. As usual, old, ignorant people like yourself don't know anything about the younger generation. Guess what, we are not going anywhere. We will continue to protest and use our voices until someone takes our concerns and demands seriously. We want Wall Street and Corporations out of the political process. Get rid of the lobby's and all the dirty money controlling the decisions of all politicians. The United States of America is for the people, by the people.. not sponsored by BOA, Goldman Sachs, Shell, GE or Google! BTW, while you looking down on the protesters for your gilded tower - it will be the young people who will finally change the country to be a place where we are all proud to live and same we are an American.

Jeff Mangum is one of the most seminal musical figures in the "indie" music scene.
