Changed the game by: Championing democracy before and after spending years in detention as a political prisoner in Myanmar. She has been called Myanmar's "First Lady of Freedom" and the country's version of Nelson Mandela. Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained in Myanmar's notorious Insein prison, a jail run by the military junta and used primarily to detain political dissidents. She has spent years under house arrest and since her release last November, she has continued to fight for democratic reforms and a place for her National League for Democracy party in the government. Suu Kyi has met with current president Thein Sein, who was handpicked by retired general and dictatorial military ruler Than Shwe, but appears to be more open to reform than his predecessor. The government has loosened media restrictions and called for economic reform. Last month, amid public pressure, the government suspended a controversial hydroelectric project financed and led by a state-owned Chinese company. Despite these advances, Suu Kyi forges ahead as Myanmar's most prominent opposition leader and a symbol of the struggle for freedom.
