10 Major Cities Where Wages Are Rising Most: Payscale.com

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 10/11/11 05:07 PM ET   Updated: 12/11/11 05:12 AM ET

There are some major cities where pay appears to be growing, but not that quickly -- and when you take inflation into account it might not be growing at all.

The income level of the average American has taken a hit since the Great Recession, falling to a low at the end of 2009, according to recent reports. But some cities have seen marginal rises in income over the past quarter, according to Payscale.com, which tracks changes in cash compensation for employed U.S. workers in the 20 largest cities. The site found that 14 out of 20 cities saw some increase in pay last quarter -- not adjusting for inflation -- making for a 0.4 percent increase nationwide.

But all of these pay boosts fail to exceed the most recent yearly inflation rate ending in August of 2.0 percent, which excludes food and energy prices. As a result, even residents of the most prosperous cities are struggling when it comes to making enough money to keep up with the cost of living, albeit less than many other U.S. cities.

The top 10 cities where income grew fastest were all over the country, including midwestern cities like Minneapolis and Detroit and East Coast cities like Boston. Locales in the Sun Belt, however, seem to be struggling the most when it comes to compensation levels with Miami, Tampa and Riverside, California comprising 3 of the 4 cities that saw decreases last quarter.

Still, depressed wages are of increasing concern in the U.S., especially considering that the trend of falling incomes began before the Great Recession: Around 1980, U.S. productivity began to rise but income levels stagnated.

Over the past decade the situation has become more tenuous with median household income dropping $6,298 from 2000 to 2010, according to a recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau. In fact, former Census Bureau officials Gordon Green and John Code recently found that income levels during the recovery from June 2009 to June 2011 actually dropped at a rate that was more than double the rate of the decline during the recession from December 2007 to June 2009. Consequently, an average full-time employed American male, adjusted for inflation, now makes about the same as he would have in 1972, the New Yorker reports.

Here are the 10 cities with the fastest growing pay, according to Payscale.com:

Here's the problem:

If a company has 1000 employees manufacturing widgets and 1,000,000 customers buying widgets the company can increase profits by moving 500 jobs to India at 20% salary of a US employee.

If those employees who lost their jobs were also customers you still have 999,500 customers. Profits are still much better despite the loss of 500 customers.

If only a few companies do this - no problem.

If most companies do this to "stay competitive" you wind up with a high percentage of customers unemployed and all the companies start to become unprofitable and start to fire more US employees.

That's when the meltdown starts. That's where we are now.

The government never fires anyone so government employees still take home relatively high salaries and benefits. Unfortunately, since everyone else is unemployed or underemployed and making much less money government tax revenue starts to plummet. The government can't meet its payroll.

Then there is a call for higher taxes on the remaining employed to help "balance the budget". This only furthers the meltdown.

The US economy has fallen from the roof of a very tall building. It is scary now but it will get very worse very soon.

How can that be? Wages are rising? Has anyone told the OWS indigents about this?
02:20 AM on 10/13/2011
Wages are -barely- rising ahead of inflation in these few cities, so don't call off the hounds just yet. There is still some fixing that needs doing.

indigents ? Why do you refer to them as indigents ?
They're just people who are fed-up with the way the rich are getting richer, at the expense of the country, and the poor getting poorer. What's wrong with that ?

If a rich person gets richer-

how does impact a poor person's life and opportunity to find success?

Stop your mindless class envy and class hate.

The real problem is the dollar and core inflation's impact on the Middle Class-

which has reduced their standard of living by 10% in the last three years alone.

Wise-up, your ignorance is showing.

8 out of 10 are in deplorable cold weather climates. No thanks. I've been in Chicago for over 20 years and I've had enough of the insane winters here. Plus, CHicago is a terrible place to live in regards to taxes, corruption in gov't and of course, the winters. Great in the spring, summer and fall, though. Great golf town. But, the southwest has been calling my name for a few years now.

My pay is exactly what it was 10 years ago, who are they talking about in San Diego?

Our family income got started around 1973.  The job my husband was doing had a pay range that frankly even the high range was not going to cut it.  BTW, we were both about 20 at that time.  My husband had finished college, but could NOT get a 1st job in his field.  It was also very expensive where we lived.  Time to move.  Packed our bags and left with a baby.  Started over at an even lower pay but had much higher potential.  After the 1st year, I looked at his pay, which had improved, but wasn't cutting it either.  Time to look for another job.  He got another job with better pay and benefits.  After another year that pay wasn't going to cut it either.  Time to hunt some more.  He got another job and stayed with that company 3 years with a promotion each year.  So in about 5 years, he had tripled his salary which wasn't much since he started at the very bottom.  But still...

It was time to move again because we needed to more where it was cheaper and a slower pace for me.  That job paid a bit lower, but the real estate was much cheaper.  He made up the salary in about 1 year and from then got promotions over the next couple years.  Time to move again.....and again....and again.

My point.  In order to stay ahead of inflation, families need to be more mobile.  There are parts of the country that are far cheaper than others that allow people to get a good start.  Also it will be necessary to always take advantage of more educational opportunities even though often it is hard with families.  Been there.  Done that.  Lots of sacrifice, but necessary.  The more education, coupled with a variety of experience the better looking the resume the more marketable you are.  Also moving around allows a person to network and keep those contacts throughout their lives and call on them when need be.  Been there too.

In the real world a person must be really aggressive about their job direction.  The days of working for the same company and slowly moving up the ladder is for the most part gone.  Companies come and go today.

You must become your own pilot.

Oh no, long ago stopped to smell the roses.  The thing I didn't mention in my post was that my friends and relatives were much more aggressive and much more successful.  However, several are gone now having died in their 50s never getting a chance to enjoy the wealth they created.

You are right, there is more to life than chasing the dollar.

Those 10 cities must be around the world because they are not here unless you are one of the elite, like the daughter of Hillary Clinton, etc.  Just listen to what Akermann of GM is saying, we have to stay competitive with the world market to keep jobs here!
