AIG Division To Begin Offering Negative Publicity Insurance

Aig Public Relations

As protests aimed at capitalism and corporate greed sweep the nation, big businesses can end up spending big bucks to get their public images back on track. Now thanks to American International Group (AIG), the insurance giant not exactly known for its stellar image, those expenses can be covered by reputation insurance.

Chartis, a division of AIG, has announced a new insurance product called "ReputationGuard" that gives policy holders facing a publicity crisis access to public relations firms Burson-Marsteller and Porter Novelli, leaders in providing damage control, The New York Times reports. The insurance covers corporate shames spanning from product recalls to executive scandals and more, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"In today's world, one person's negative opinion can quickly become adverse publicity on a global scale," president of Chartis's professional liability unit Tracie Grella said in a statement: "Public perception of the response to an event can have a lasting impact on an organization's reputation. ReputationGuard is a unique solution to this exposure."

As it happens, AIG knows something about managing a bad reputation. The insurance company, whose liquidity crisis was partly blamed for exacerbating the 2008 financial crisis, received $68 billion in government bailouts in 2008, engendering lasting public scorn from the American people. The company is still majority-owned by the U.S. government.

The name Chartis, formerly AIU Holdings, itself represents the company's own efforts at preserving its reputation by distancing itself from the AIG name, according to the Wall Street Journal.

But AIG didn't stop there. At the height of its public woes the insurance giant employed a total of 4 public relations firms, according to TIME, each tasked with handling a different area of the company's public image. Burson-Marsteller, for example, handled controversial issues, while another firm was put in charge of structuring statements on the bailout money AIG received.

Burson-Marsteller's hands aren't clean of controversy either. Earlier this year, it was reported that the public relations firm had been hired to help get anti-Google stories into major media outlets.

All of AIG's work may not have been enough to undo the damage caused by what many viewed as reckless spending of U.S. taxpayer money that included big bonuses for executives and even a company-sponsored getaway at a luxurious resort just 5 days after receiving the first round of bailouts. A May 2011 poll by Harris Interactive found that AIG has the worst corporate reputation, surpassing even Wall Street super-power Goldman Sachs and Gulf oil-spilling BP. As The New York Times points out, it's even been lampooned on "Saturday Night Live."

In August, AIG repaid $11.4 billion of its government bailout, yet the company's stock still remains 95 percent lower than it's precrisis high, the Wall Street Journal reports.

AIG is NOT a taxpayer owned company. It is a Multinational Corporation created by Cornelius Vander Starr in 1919 with the first office opened in Shanghai, China.

The Federal Reserve Bank Board of Governors owns 79% of it. That means it is still a PRIVATE corporation despite the bailouts, just like the Federal Reserve Bank...think about that one for a moment.

You folks really should read more, and not from the news papers or Yahoo, HP, Fox sites.

Pacific Century Regional Developments Limited is a Singapore based company owned by Hong Kong's Richard Li, son of Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka Shing which, as of 2009, owns 500 million dollars worth of the company as well.

Still think you, as a taxpayer, has any say in what happens? Me thinks not!

This should really be called "Propaganda Insurance", not publicity insurance.

It would seem the oligarchs will stoop to the lowest form of pandering to prop up their tarnished image despite owning the very criminal activity that put a bad light on their dealings in the first place.

Can I buy insurance against propaganda?

Isn't AIG still owned by the US tax payers? As a fractional stakeholder's shouldn't we maybe be offended that there is now a policy for sale that protects the culprits that are reckless with our economy and environment?

So with a bit of reasoning and assumption. Is it safe to say that a controlling interest is owned by the US taxpayer? And that a Chinese billionaire threw his hat into the ring too?

There is a spin put on everything. You never know for sure, if what you are hearing is the truth or what a person really thinks and feels. Truth matters little, it is the "show" that counts. The image that must be maintained. Just do what is right from the start and then you can stand by your words and your deeds.

Why are AIG's criminal executives still at large?  They were at the center of the greatest robbery in world history and not ONE of their executives has been arrested.  Meanwhile, the people protesting the crimes of Wall St. get arrested for simply protesting.  This country is no longer a democracy.  It is a fascist corporatocracy.

I had to check 17 times to make sure this wasn't an article from The Onion.

AIG, you have really out done yourselves, again.

The fact that this insurance exists proves that "influencing the public" can easily be purchased if you enough money. Not only is it insulting, it also speaks volume on the kind of society we currently reside in (assuming dear reader, you also are from the USA).

Does this mean that if you're already a known charlatan you're denied coverage for your pre-existing condition? Are you charged higher premiums? Nope. You get a Club Member discount.

AIG will be their own first customer on this one . . . and in the event of a claim, they will fight themselves to see who wins..

"AIG to offer reputation insurance" Perhaps the most ironic headline in the history of mankind.
