D.C. Terror Plot Foiled Using Cooperation By U.S., Mexico

Dc Terror Plot Mexico

E. EDUARDO CASTILLO   10/11/11 11:40 PM ET   AP

MEXICO CITY — Mexico worked closely with U.S. authorities to help foil an alleged $1.5 million plot to kill the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Washington, a foreign ministry official said Tuesday.

Mexico issued an immigration alert on Manssor Arbabsiar, 56, after U.S. authorities told Mexican counterparts that Arbabsiar was the subject of an arrest warrant for "serious crimes," said Julian Ventura, undersecretary for North America.

Ventura told reporters that the alert prompted Mexican immigration officials to turn Arbabsiar away when he tried to enter Mexico on Sept. 28. Arbabsiar, a U.S. citizen who holds an Iranian passport, was arrested the next day when he arrived at New York's Kennedy International Airport.

Ventura did not say where Arbabsiar tried to enter Mexico, but an immigration official said later that it was at the airport in Mexico City. The official agreed to discuss the matter only on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the case.

Arbabsiar was charged Tuesday in U.S. District Court in New York with conspiring to kill the Saudi diplomat, Adel Al-Jubeir.

U.S. authorities allege Arbabsiar was attempting to meet in Mexico with a U.S. informant posing as a Mexican drug cartel associate. U.S. authorities allege he hired the informant for $1.5 million to carry out the assassination with a bomb attack while Al-Jubeir dined at his favorite restaurant.

Court documents say Arbabsiar and the informant had met in Mexico before Sept. 28, though authorities have not said where. They said he often traveled to Mexico on business.

"From the outset, Mexico and the United States exchanged information and acted together," Ventura said, reading a statement on the operation. "The government of Mexico reiterates its full commitment to international cooperation to prevent and combat terrorism and condemns any attempt by any individual, group or international player to commit actions of this nature from our national territory."

The undersecretary said the information was shared through protocols the two countries already had established, particularly on matters of regional security and justice.

He did not answer any questions.

(This version CORRECTS that suspect was arrested Sept. 29 instead of Sept. 28.)

Too good to be true. It makes the American interference on Mexican affairs look good. It makes Iranians look bad. It makes American and Mexican intelligence look good, yet nothing really happened. I remain skeptic.

Arbabsiar should be tried on treason charges and executed. Also why was he allowed to retain an Iranian passport?
11:29 PM on 10/12/2011
Jeez, can you put your brain in gear before you run your mouth? Read the statute. There's no declaration of war, there's no treason. You or anybody else calling it a war doesn't make it so.

A country can issue a passport to anybody it chooses. Many countries do not recognize the oath of renunciation necessary to US naturalization, and the British are one of the most obvious. No country is going to go to war over another country choosing to issue a passport to some idiot.

He should be tried. The POINT of a trial is to decide guilt or not, and sentence as necessary. Obviously, we could save a lot of money on courts if we just hired you to read HuffPost, eh?

When are we going to do something about the muslim menace in the world ? In 2001 we should have leveled Riyadh and told Teheran that they were next. The last administration missed the chance (in hindsight) to stop these jerks. The current administration is not only lacking the guts but they are as clueless in foreign affairs as they are in handling the economy. I still can't believe Holder is the AG. It's no wonder we're a laughingstock.

Muslim menace, or do you mean extremist menace? If you mean Muslim meanace, you are nothing more than a bigot. You do know, don't you, that Islam has the most members in the world of any other religon?
09:51 AM on 10/14/2011
I mean MUSLIM Menace and I'm no bigot !!! As a christian I would be outraged if christians were blowing up innocent people in the name of god. I would show that outrage. In the muslim world I'm just not seeing it. Don't kiss their butts because there are a lot of them (or you) or do you think it's the fashionable religion. I can't teach you right from wrong by posting messages.

Yeah, I'm just wondering when is the last time the US Attorney General was the one to announce the foiling of a terror plot? Has that EVER happened before?? And maybe I'm a little too curious, but if Iran was seriously going to assassinate somebody, why would they try to enlist the help of the Mexican drug cartel???

And.....whoa...wait....stop....never mind.....

Fast and Furious. 'nough said.

I was really hoping I'd wake up this morning to hear our government bombed all the nuclear facilities in Iran. This would be the opportunity to remove the threat to the world of a nuclear Iran in light of the act of war the Iranian government planned to perpetrate on US spoil. The thought of them having nuclear weapons is chilling!

I agree. We must send these bloodthirsty vermin a clear message. But I doubt you'll find such bold activity happen under the Obama administration. Although he may think it's good going into Africa to participate in a civil war, he won't do anything against a country that has both the will and the means to fight back. We need Rupublican leadership now more than ever.

Beautiful "Wag the Dog" moment to get them off of "Fast & Furious". They have known about this since June. To get back to the important business of the DOJ? What like sueing our own states for trying to enforce the laws you will not Mr. Holder?

Agreed. Their move to report this now definitely hurt the investigation because it gave many Irian agents the heads up and time to disappear.

I guess HuffPO wil parse this story out piecemeal day after day until it actually investigates the evidence and publishes all the details in a standard journalistic fashion. Half stories and innuendo is its current modus operandi. I guess Holder needed some relief from Fast and Furious.
01:54 PM on 10/12/2011
obviously this was a ploy to take the heat off holder.announcement was way too convient especially when the atf and dea where credited with breaking investigation.holder walking off when questioned abou fast and furious said it all, fire him indict him put him in prison

I was going to ask, how many of the terrorists arrested are Tea Party members like Joke Biden said?

LOL Holder is such a 'class act'

He tried to hold a press conference on the foiled plot and after the 2nd question on "Fast and Furious" he simply walked off-stage.

Enjoy your subpoena Eric.

It will be fun to watch you squirm....

It is forbidden, under sharia'h law, for a muslim to murder another muslim. I'm past deciding the Iranians are mad. As to the Saudis, we maintain an aliiance with them because of oil. 90% of terrorist attacks, including 9/11 are financed by Saudis. Neither country is our friend.

I have a hard time believing that the US law enforcement personnel actually uncovered the assassination plot. I am of an opinion that one or both of the countries whose dignitaries were at risk (or possibly an anonymous Iranian defector) handed the "plot" to the US to save the sagging US self-esteem in their "War" on terrorism.... And that's if this is not another scenario manufactured in the US propaganda factory.

BHO does need votes but he is not going to get them. He is the worst president this country has ever had. Campaigning is all he know how to do.

Don't talk to the Saudis, talk to the oil speculators.
11:51 AM on 10/12/2011
We also pay huge sums, tax free, to felons to turn anyone in, guilty or innocent. The paid informant also gets his sentence reduced or forgiven when he turns someone in!!! This is not in regards to drugs, but is now expanded to so called terrorists! Let the drugsuppliers, sellers and gangs do business as usual, but is you are Muslim, watch out!

well, since nobody gave mexico the heads up, I will. It is very important to work well with your neighbors, now we mexicans just hope that all the druglords living in the US get caught, because they dont live here anymore, they just run their ops here, but enjoy all the perks of american living in the USA. Why do you let this happen? I am thinking since they have so much cash, they can buy out anyone.

The drug lords don't live in the U.S., they live in Columbia. The people you are talking about are mere lieutenants, and killing/arresting them will only bring replacements who are just as deadly.
02:47 PM on 10/12/2011
Actually, the biggest drug lords live in Mexico now.
