Kristen Stewart Lashes Out At Teachers, Says They Failed Her

Having starred in films that demolish the box office again and again with another motion picture mega-hit in the works, plus a handsome boyfriend, Twilight actress Kristen Stewart appears to have it all.

It wasn't always that way, though.

Recently, The Age reported the Snow White and The Huntsman star lashed out at her former school teachers, saying that they "failed her."

Since Stewart began her acting career at an early age, she performed the delicate balancing act of managing school, auditions and cinematic roles. Finally, in the 7th grade, she buckled under what she described to British GQ, as "uncomfortable" pressure and started homeschooling.

"I was feeling a little self-conscious about the acting thing with my peers, but also my teachers became a problem," The New Zealand Herald quotes Stewart telling British GQ. "They didn't want to do the extra work or put packages together so I could keep up while away. My teachers failed me. not one, but all of them. I'm always slightly ashamed in a way about what I do. I'm slightly embarrassed as I had such serious ambitions when I was younger, I just never imagined that I would ever have a reason not to go to school. But then this happened."

Anyone here who thinks being an actor or actress is not working can be my guest and go to Hollywood and take up the career yourselves and see how you like it. There's a reason so many of the Hollywood set have substance-abuse and relationship problems and it's the same reason military folk have those problems. STRESS. Not only are their jobs demanding but then they have to put up with your crap after spending their lives under your microscopes.

And if it went down the way Stewart says it went down, yes, her teachers failed her. If a public school student fails, they say it's the student's fault. If a homeschooled student fails, they say it's the parents' fault. The parents being in the position of teacher in the latter situation, the hypocrisy is obvious. Stewart didn't say anything about failing classes. She wasn't *getting the work*. I'm tired of teachers whining about not getting paid enough for their dedication to students when I keep hearing stories like this about students who need extra help but oh, that's unreasonable, what snotty little princesses.

And this is why I homeschool my daughter. We are living beings, not cogs, and I'm so freaking sorry we don't fit properly into your stupid machine. Get over it.

(FYI, not a Twilight fan. I'm just tired of this garbage.)

Boo Hoo for the actress making a buttload of money. I'm sure she is deeply scarred from not being able to pursue her childhood ambitions and instead is stuck having to make movies. This world is so unfair, poor Kristen. Well maybe she can stop acting ( I don't think she ever started), take her money and go to college or go after whatever dreams she had.
09:25 AM on 11/06/2011
Yeah, I'm sure the millions of people who go to work and go to school will feel a lot of sympathy for you, Kristen. You made the choice to be an actress. Your teachers are not obligated to treat you differently. You can't act and go to school at the same time. It's one or the other. Stop complaining.
07:44 PM on 10/17/2011
Really? I have no sympathy--or even empathy. There's nothing wrong with homeschooling, and teachers already don't really have time off. When they aren't in the classroom, they're grading papers, communicating with students and parents, writing lesson plans, organizing activities, meeting with administrators, and so on. In all fairness to them, they aren't to blame for her academic failures. She and her family should have prioritized, and if acting was a priority (as it seemingly was), they should have made the changes in her education quickly--BEFORE she failed.

Why are people being so nasty over a couple singled out quotes from a print interview? None of you were there to know what happened. How do any of you know that her 7th grade teachers didn't fail her? As if there are no bad teachers out there, cmon... Also, she might just be saying they "failed" her as in they all literally gave her F's and as a result she dropped out. Why when I read these comments does it feel like a bunch of sharks who smelled blood and are having a good old feeding frenzy. I'm sure you are ALL in a position to judge this girl from a few words printed words. And this is supposed to be the "Education" section? You people are worse than the Entertainment section. Sad, very sad.

All those assuming she was making tones of money as a 12 year old starting her career should get their facts straight.

Dude, when someone says something that "sounds" like something a spoiled brat would say, people are not going to like that person. She really should watch what she says. Or not speak at all. Don't do interviews. Don't make blockbuster movies.

Playing the victim is getting old too. Stop making blockbuster movies if you don't want the attention. Go to school if that's what you want to do. The only one making you ashamed of who you are is you.

Tons not "tones" I think your teachers failed you as well.

Have of you thought that the "headline" was worded to cause all of this attention to this article? Well it worked! How many times has Kristen Stewart been misquoted? Too many to count! I honestly can't believe all of the so called educated people that wasted time on another article that makes her look bad. That's exactly what most of these sites are hoping for and we are giving it to them. Look how many hits this one headline has received!! Just saying...

Yes, like most headlines here, it was probably worded to get attention. No surprise!
I have no idea how many times she's been misquoted, I really haven't followed her that closely. Since you have, I would love to hear the other side. Where did she go to school? For how long was she away from school at a time, and how much communication was there between her and the school?
01:40 AM on 10/17/2011
I don't know details but I have heard interviews where she is upset that she is misquoted a lot. As for her school, I don't know anything except she did graduate and go to school while she was shooting movies. Not at a private school but either packets or a tutor...
This is the first time I have made a comment on any site. I guess it's the mother in me that made me so upset about how this article was printed to cause bad press for Kristen. I think everyone needs to quit picking on her and twisting her words. I think people need to realize she is a real person with feelings. I don't care how much she gets paid. It's not ok for these sites to twist her words just to get hits...
As for my other comments to you, I would think that a teacher of all people should see this nonsense for what it is. Not feed into it and judge someone you don't know. I personally feel that if you want to post on these sites that it isn't a good example for the teenagers on this site to hear a teacher put people they don't even know down. It's my opinion only! I appreciate that teachers have very difficult jobs with little pay but I don't think this is the right place to speak as a teacher. You should just speak as yourself. That's my opinion only!

What a moron. It is NOT a teacher's responsibility to teach students who are not in their class. If the parents want their kid to be an actor and miss weeks or months of school at a time, it is the parents' responsibility to hire tutors or home school their kid. Furthermore, her statement that teachers didn't "put together packets" for her is incredibly insulting. Apparently she thinks that there is no reason to be in class when you have a worksheet. If that is true, why do we need teachers at all? We should just send home worksheets to every kid and they will all be educated!

Kristen, don't you have a angst filled pout to go work on? Or at least a vampire spawn to go birth?

I had mad respect for her before she was in twilight... then she did those movies and while I can say at least she got to line her pockets I really think those movies are detrimental to female empowerment

Ultimately, it's a tale of success that she was able to do so well professionally. Of her generation, she's the only one who has landed W and Vogue and other editorial work in fashion magazines -- but even if she never achieves as much success in her future work, she'll be wealthy for the rest of her life. She did well to leave high school, and eventually she'll have to learn to forgive her teachers. In 999 out of 1000 cases, they would have been right to tell her to be in class all the time. She's just the one exception.

How dare she!! I am a teacher and when a student is away from school for illness, I do all I can to help the homebound teacher assigned to my student. It takes hours to get all the materials and lessons plans ready for one student to complete at home with a homebound teacher. And, I am basically doing my job twice and only being paid once. Kudos to those teachers who didn't help her have a career AND get class credits. They didn't let her use them. Her teachers did not have to accomodate her - by law I only have to send work home for serious illness and (I hate this part) pregnancy. Even then only a few weeks are allowed on the homebound program. What a selfish moron.

Sure, blame the men & woman who make about 65k a year teaching, disciplining, and sometimes babysitting multiple children who are not their own. She sounds only self-aware. Shenanigans! Shenanigans on her sense of entitlement!

$65,000 a year? Shite. I'd love to know which district pays that to a teacher.

:( sorry to hear that. NY board of ed, though I don't know how long that will last. The idea there is to give the boot to tenured teachers and hire greenhorns fresh outta school so they can pay them peanuts.

I'm studying theatre education in college right now (which means that I'm getting a degree in theatre, working towards my teaching certificate and minoring in English). Part of the reason I want to be a teacher is because I had a hard time in high school, but I went out and did something about it. I wasn't traveling all over the country or doing anything glamorous, but I used my poor teachers as inspiration for what I don't want to be when I grow up.

Many high school teachers work with 120 students a day (that's just a general estimation, it can be more or less depending on the school), and all of them are going to be individuals with different needs. Some students will be bored in class with work below their skill level and others will be barely passing, but despite the fact that a good teacher would like to dedicate every hour of their day to helping each student, it just isn't possible, and when you've taken on a responsibility like what Kristen did, most teachers would expect that you're also capable of handling it yourself.

Thomson!!! This is SO wonderful to hear!!!
I was the same way. I had a really hard time in high school, and if I hadn't had the teachers I had I don't think I would have made it. So they inspired me too, but in a different way, to want to become one!
I wish you all the luck and success, because you get it, that nothing good comes without lots of hard work.

kids with a career you need to go to school that extra work by the teacher as long as you keep up with your studies. can not have it all. education is a partner ship parent student and teacher. I do not only blame the teachers. parents are making excuses for their children so much now. makes me crazy. teachers are to teach and not be the baby sitter, goffer, get a life better yet get an education.
11:31 PM on 10/13/2011
I do not agree with what Kristen Stewart is saying, heck I don't even know who she is.... She had a choice, she can't blame it on the teachers. Although I do think there are alot more bad teachers than good. Through my sons public school education, Kindergarten through graduation he had 5 good teachers, actually they were great teachers! The rest really didn't give a crap and they didn't hesitate to make it obvious to all the kids.
03:57 PM on 10/13/2011
CONT: So she did what she could between his hsopital stays and manged to get him into 5th grade after missing 4th, and I give my son the best of praise for doing work when he flet like crap and had a constint ridge in his his forehead from litterly sleeping over a puke bucket. So dont think that all teachers GIVE A CRAP, What ever the reason yes some dont care, and some like my daughtes will do everything they can for the kids that come thru thier doors. So weather or not you like kristen stewart. I can see what she means by the teachers just not caring to help in any way to help her keep up with homework, so I guess it is a good thing that there are programs out there now that can help kids in her and my sons shoes keep up with their education. It is not that much work to run off an extra copy of worksheets and write down pages in a book to work on. and put in his / her cubby to be picked up. and grading is nothing either as it would be done if they where in the class too. So in truth it is not really extra work.
