The Funniest #PerryHistory Tweets: Twitter Responds To Rick Perry Gaffe After GOP Debate

First Posted: 10/12/11 02:35 AM ET   Updated: 12/11/11 05:12 AM ET

Sometimes, it's just too easy.

After tonight's Washington Post/Bloomberg GOP debate, Rick Perry misspoke when talking to the press at Dartmouth College about his anti-federalism views by emphasizing that "...the reason we fought the revolution in the 16th century was to get away from that kind of onerous crown."

Of course, he was only a little bit off -- by two centuries. Even the most basic student of American history knows that the revolution was fought in the 1700s, or in the 18th century. Then again, Perry hasn't seemed too fond of American history in the past.

And thus was born the Twitter hashtag #PerryHistory (apparently by David Roberts). In the words of The Atlantic's Garance Franke-Ruta, "The hashtag for the implosion of the Perry campaign is #perryhistory," a nod to both the governor's gaffe as well as his lackluster performance at the debate.

Here are some of our favorite #PerryHistory tweets since the debate. Send us your own Perry-style bungling of history at @HuffPostComedy!

Why is everyone worried? GWB proved that you don't need to be awake to run this country. I mean, he ran it into the ground, but he still RAN it. Nothing bad happened? Right?! I mean, we are still a viable, prosperous nation.... right? Perry will do fine as POTUS! We'll just have to wake him on days where he needs to campaign for reelection. Other than that... We'll just run some John Wayne movies, dub in Perry's voice and make the rest of the world think he's in charge.

Don't blame Perry. He got all these 'facts' from the 2010 Fundamentalist/Fringe-sanctioned Texas history books.

It seems redundant to comment on an article, about about comments, about someone else.

If not for Parry's name in the headline, what substance this?

Slow news day?

Get out to the Occupy Wall St., and take notes.

Soon the hashtag will be changed to #PerryHerstory, because Anita's gonna shove a Bluetooth in his ear so hard he'll be hearing radio signals through his Texas A&M thong.

Numbers 8 and 16 made me cackle loudly.

Yeah, Ole Bath House Ricky. Sad thing is--I could see him reading these tweets and nodding in agreement, finding them to be right on target and worthy of inclusion in Texas-produced history textbooks aimed at high school kids.

Did anyone else pick up on the fact that Perry's views are actually radically pro-federalism. Federalism being the doctrine that the federal government has limited, enumerated powers, and all other powers reside with the states.

Other than that, yeah, Perry's an idiot.

When I first viewed the hilarious Bad Lip Reading parody of Rick Perry, I marveled at the incredible creativity of the producers of that video. Unfortunately, they have been outdone by Perry himself, who is continuing in the grand tradition of George W. Bush. Stay tuned for a 2012 Perry daily tear-off calendar collection of his misstatements, just like the one I purchased for his buddy George a few years back....
