What Loving Sweets Might Say About Your Personality

Sweet Personality

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/13/11 04:30 PM ET Updated: 12/13/11 05:12 AM ET

It might seem like a sugar-coated overgeneralization to say that people with sweet dispositions also really like sweets, but a small new study is giving some weight to the idea.

The findings, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, show that people who like sweets are also more likely to be agreeable, friendly and compassionate than people who prefer other tastes, like bitter or spicy foods.

Researchers also found that people given sweet foods were more likely to help someone in need afterward, compared with people who don't eat anything or people who eat a bland food, MSNBC reported.

"Our results suggest there is a robust link between sweet tastes and pro-social behavior," study researcher Michael D. Robinson, of North Dakota State University, told EHS Today. "Such findings reveal that metaphors can lead to unique and provocative predictions about people’s behaviors and personality traits."

The findings were based off a series of experiments involving college students.

Another study published earlier this year also shows that there seems to be an association between having a sweet tooth and having a slim waist (though that study was admittedly funded by the National Confectioners Association), but researchers said that's likely because they exercise more to compensate for the extra calories, MSNBC reported.

Now if you were to completely disregard the scientific method, the Baltimore Sun published this (totally invented) guide to what your favorite candy says about your personality type.

Most people I've known with a big sweet tooth have been the opposite of sweet. I've found them to be greedy, selfish and/or b*itchy! Watch Willy Wonka, there's a difference between enjoying a sweet now and then and gobbling down sugar like Augustus or Veruca!

The link between loving sweets and being a sweet person (at least for me) was that the sugar addiction kept me in a pleasant fog and allowed me to repress my dark side, so that I was a people pleasing, codependent doormat. I was very likeable and often described as "sweet," but I was killing myself with carbs in order to maintain that persona. Since following a healthier diet, I've become much more assertive, opinionated, and discriminating regarding whom I'm willing to reach out to and befriend or help.

If you suspect your love of sweets is extreme enough to constitute an addiction, try putting down the sugar and other high carbs for awhile, and set your inner curmudgeon free.

You kidding? I visited Bruges and Brussels and went crazy with all the chocolates all over the place. I do find Belgian chocolates available around the Holidays. They have that almondy taste to them that just melts in your mouth. Believe me, I am an equal chocolate opportunity eater.

I like Swiss and German chocolates because they sometimes have liquor fillings. These I rarely find them in Florida. Bed, Bad & Beyond sells Anton Berg chocolate liqueurs right before December. Have to rush to buy them before they are sold out. They make wonderful presents.

It would be unfortunate if this article encourages people to eat more sweets because there's some evidence that eating a lot of simple carbohydrates (sugars and some starches) over a lifetime may essentially wear out your pancreas--producing diabetes.
