Jahessye Shockley Missing: Police Scramble To Find Arizona Girl Missing For 2 Days

AMANDA LEE MYERS   10/13/11 08:17 PM ET   AP

PHOENIX — The parents of a 5-year-old Arizona girl who has been missing for two days were not under suspicion and police had no evidence of a kidnapping, but investigators said Thursday they weren't ruling out anything.

Jahessye Shockley (pronounced like "Jesse") was last seen by her three older siblings around 5 p.m. Tuesday after their mother went out to run an errand. Police suspect the girl left through the front door of her home in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale.

The girl's father does not live with the family and there were no fights between the parents over custody, said Glendale police officer Tracey Breeden.

The longer Jahessye remains missing, the more concerned police grow.

"Anytime the time lengthens it becomes difficult to locate a person," Breeden said Thursday. "With the time going by, you're very concerned about their welfare, especially when you have a 5-year-old child involved. The longer they're away, the more likely something could happen."

Jahessye's mother, Jerice Hunter, declined to speak to The Associated Press but told KNXV-TV that she just wants her daughter back.

"She's somebody's child – mine," Hunter said through tears. "Please bring my child home."

About 100 police officers and volunteers working in teams of four with police dogs were blanketing the area within three miles of the girl's home. They knocked on doors, passed out flyers with the girl's picture and combed through shrubbery and trash bins.

"We're searching everything you can imagine," Breeden said, adding that a one-mile radius around the home has all but been cleared. "We went over it and we went over it again."

Police also set up a separate phone line for the case and received a couple dozen tips by Thursday. The number is 623-930-4357.

Police said Jahessye is a black girl with brown eyes. She's 3 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 55 pounds and was last seen wearing a plain white shirt, blue jean shorts and pink sandals.

One woman reported seeing a girl matching Jahessye's description wandering around the neighborhood before being pulled into a black sedan through the passenger door.

Breeden said police had not confirmed the validity of the tip, saying that the description of the incident was vague and no license plate was provided.

She said the girl's mother has been cooperative with police and was extremely upset about her daughter's disappearance. The girl's extended family also has been helping with the search by passing out flyers.

"We're very concerned," Breeden said. "That's why we're going over every area, rechecking areas, expanding our search and using every asset we can get our hands on to try to get information out there."

Did they ever questioned the 12 year old, who unlocked the door? How long was mom gone?
Why didn't grandma baby sit? Sure there are 12 year old that are trusted babysitters, but this family had many problems to start with, and the 12 year old was in no condition to safeguard her siblings.
I hope and pray they will find this little girl alive and well.

Some are saying the grandma is "playing the race card". Folks , the woman is simply wondering as I am, why isn';t her grand childs face NOT appearing on Good Moring America or Nancy Grace like baby Lisa. If it takes the race card to get attention, then she should have at it. After all, it got our attention.

Get real and start being honest; in America, it is ALWAYS about race. I hope her is found safe and unharmed.

Is the child's face appearing on local TV? Is this a national story that people will be intrigued with because of the possible dirt on the family? Do you want the national media digging into why a mother left her four children alone to run an errand? They will dig into her past and her present but local media probably not so much. There is a big potential down side to Grama's desire for her 15 minutes of fame on Good Morning America.

I stand corrected on Jahessye, I was under the impression she was in the system, and I pray for this child, like do for all children int the World. Bring her home. I saw a comment about her family and she would be better off in system. I will check her reasoning, I know like Senator Nancy Schaefer said. There are cases that we must remove. Unfortunate those are the ones they don't remove. I think until the fix these foster parents, I am sure it is hard to find and the cream of the cream are not their. I happen to know very good and loving Foster Parents. Right I just want and pray this little beautiful child with a smile of gold light, come home. Love light

The reason they are saying she would be better off is because the mother was convicted of child abuse (the torture charge was dropped as part of a plea agreement), and the father is a registered sex offender who is serving time in prison.

OH lord These children do not deserve any of this, I see it all day with the CPS, Foster, missing, murdered. and I never get used to it, Today Teared that when get overloaded with cases after case, case, child death after death, Here my thing about CPS they take the children that family counseling or training could help, yet the one need help are not taken or kidnapped. I will say they gave in Fla a License to Foster to a known Pedophile who just got out of jail, poor children. I pray one day we do better, love and light

I am no Fan of Foster Care just wrote this to NBC about the fact that a judge is finally looking at the Social Worker, and there many reasons those twins should not be dead. I post and this poor child, beautiful child, I pray to my Higher Power that she is not hurt or with a pedophile. God they are everywhere. This issue is world wide Foster care.

When did it become a crime to be poor. Ask the Corporations, the Billionaire Club, Banks and Wall street, biggest scam pulled on We the People,.

Yesterday I heard a disabled teen explain her abuse, 17 and pregnant. Back to the Twins, Nubia, I live in Miami, we are many advocates, have contacted Senator Rubio, and just got letter from, David Rivera, same generic letter. Twins, I saw and read interview, the neighbors had banners out. they had 3 alarms. They are broken children we are to help, not send to God knows where, to be abused, starved, impregnated, and murdered. These wise decisions to take or to bring back a child, really kidnapping. They have no law or supervision, they need policing.

Also the 2 boys they returned mother drowned them. We have the case of DCF and CPS, example of incompetence files, they gave Foster care children to a known Pedophile who had been just out of Jail.

.( WE THE PEOPLE DEMAND AN OFFICIAL AUDIT BY THIRD PARTY), on all these agencies. Regards Leonor Arango and Bless Judge Lenderman

I'm hoping/thinking someone knows the lifestyle she was living in and grabbed her in hopes of raising her themselves. Mom.. criminal record, on her fifth kid, etc. No excuse for a kidnapping but it crossed my mind as a possibility. Grandma threw the RACE card out a couple nights ago which was BS and not going to help their cause. She stated ON TV that her granddaughter is a black kid but she hopes the police department will still put in a lot of effort to find her. STUPID statement grief or not. Something's just not smelling right here.

Here is another sad story of a young child who went missing. It seems as if this is happening every day. She had 2 other siblings 9 and 12 years old. I'm assuming the mother told the 12 year old to look after the younger children. I would never let a 12 year old look after any of my children, I don't care how responsible the parents think they are. There are people preying on young children just waiting for the parents to make one little mistake. There are people that watch your every move without you knowing about it. I have 3 small children and I feel for her mother and all the parents in the worlds who have lost a child. I pray that this little girl is ok.

Ok you clearly have an issue with rich people based on a few of your posts. They give more than any other group of people do already and they provide jobs for people. Why do you lump them all together? Target one rich person who gives less money than you do (as a %) and then make a case. I would be willing to bet you can't find one. I would be willing to bet all rich people give a greater portion of their earnings to charity than you or any of the other class division people do. Demand more of the common man if you want to make a difference in society.

Thank You so much Drill Thrall,
Isnt it terrible at all the little kids who are so unsupervised? I told my husband when we saw alittle one on the sidewaalk playing on a trike(probaly 2 yrs old) i said look noone is watching this little girl and its so dangerous but when smeone takes one of these little angels then their parents go on T.V and cry and beg for them to be returned when alot of the time it all could have been avoided had they just been watching them in the first place.( Of course its not always the case but alot of times i think it is). I so often want to stop and tell them pease watch your children but you cant do that either so i just pray they stay safe and i guess its about all we can do is ask the good Lord to watch over them and keep them from harm.Take Care and again i Thank you

"as the the white one getting..l"

What does color have to do with this? A little girl is missing. Why do some of you people always have to bring race into something? Color has nothing to do with this! Give it a rest already! Perhaps you should Google all the missing children that have been in the news. I'm sure you will see children from many different backgrounds.

12:01 PM on 10/17/2011
why so angry? its a fact that missing white women & girls get the most media attention. and good for them. it is always good to get media attention when someone goes missing or is assumed in some danger. all the commenter was saying is that they hope this little black girl can get high media coverage. she went on to say that she wishes ALL missing would get high media coverage. i just don't understand all that anger. her mother might beat her & her daddy might be incarcerated, but surely you would agree that is a safer place to be than in the custody of pedophile psycho.

It creates hostility and an environment of "why look for theirs when they don't look for ours"....Its great that you, like me , dont care what color the child is, just that a child is missing. Sadly the media doesnt report it like that. I'm suprised, but delighted to see her face here getting exposure. In time maybe all missing children regardless of race or gender will be treted the same and be exposed to the media so they are found
