Occupy Wall Street Protests Draw Global Attention

Occupy Wall Street

NEW YORK -- The Occupy Wall Street movement, which has spawned grass-roots activities around the U.S. and prompted comments from President Barack Obama, is now drawing political remarks from overseas.

Poland's former President Lech Walesa says he supports the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York, saying he is planning either a visit or writing a letter to the protesters.

Walesa said the global economic crisis has made people aware that "we need to change the capitalist system" because we need "more justice, more people's interests, and less money for money's sake."

Meanwhile, Iran's top leader said the wave of protests reflects a serious problem that will ultimately topple capitalism in America. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claimed the United States is in a full-blown crisis because its "corrupt foundation has been exposed to the American people."

Khamenei's remarks came a day after U.S. officials said the Obama administration plans to leverage charges that Iran plotted to assassinate Saudi Arabia's ambassador into a new global campaign to isolate the Islamic republic.

For the past 3 1/2 weeks, the protesters have besieged a park in lower Manhattan near Wall Street to rally primarily against corporate greed as what they say is the primary cause for the country's failing economy.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited them Wednesday at Zuccotti Park, where protesters have been camped out since mid-September. Bloomberg told them park owner Brookfield Properties plans to clean the public space on Friday, and said they would be allowed to return after the park is clean.

Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway said in a statement that the protest has "created unsanitary conditions and considerable wear and tear on the park." He said Brookfield Properties asked for police help to clear the park so it can be cleaned.

Allison Esso of Human Services Council, a group that supports the protesters, was wary. "I'm hoping that they're not trying to undermine their ability to protest," she said.

The New York protest has triggered sympathetic groups in other cities, who each stage their own local rallies and demonstrations: Occupy Boston, Occupy Cincinnati, Occupy Houston, Occupy Los Angeles, Occupy Philadelphia, Occupy Providence, Occupy Salt Lake, and Occupy Seattle, among them.

Protesters say they are in it for the long haul, despite the onset of cold weather.

The New York demonstrators gathered Wednesday at the headquarters of JP Morgan Chase, where they'll continue to decry the expiration of the state's 2 percent "millionaires' tax" in December.

Meanwhile, a lawyer for a woman pepper sprayed during an action last month is demanding that the Manhattan district attorney prosecute an NYPD deputy inspector on an assault charge. Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the matter was being investigated by police internal affairs and the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

The New York state comptroller has issued a report showing that Wall Street is again losing jobs because of global economic woes. The job losses threaten tax revenue for a city and state heavily reliant on the financial industry.

The industry shed 4,100 jobs in late spring and summer and could lose nearly 10,000 more by the end of 2012, Comptroller Thomas Napoli said. That would bring the total industry loss to 32,000 positions since the financial meltdown of 2008.

The sector employed 166,600 people in investment banks, securities trading firms and hedge funds as of August.

Everyone has suffered in this country regardless of political affiliation. There are several issues that have contributed to America's current predicament from unnecessary wars to lack of oversight of the financial sector during the heyday of the questionable mortgages produced during the past years. Our politicians are bound to lobbyists and outdated ideologies that contribute to this country's misery. The American dream has been dead for some time and only the few at the top have benefited while the rest of the country languishes in poverty and debt. We need genuine change and I doubt a new election that amounts to musical chairs between the political parties will resolve these matters. We either need a new party that is truly representative of the people or a genuine revolution to revamp our system. America's elected officials are not leaders; they are our problem.

It's refreshing to see how former president Walesa who toppled comm u nism in Poland to make way for capitalism can see that the other extreme (unregulated capitalism) can also be just as bad and bring tremendous injustice and inequality.
In this country it seems most in power and politics share only the point of view that any capitalism is good anything else is soci a lism. It seems as though we never stop and look at the big picture or actually think about whats going on, instead we hold on to prejudiced economic or political ideologies of our fathers and grandfathers and not take into consideration everything around us has changed and the ideologies no longer hold true.

Some perspective on this idea that taxes and capitalism are opposing principals: Even the most rabid "conservative" will agree, the government needs to tax citizens in order to run the country, and maintain the infrastructure. A "progressive" tax system makes a middle class possible, while a tax system like Herman Cain's "999 plan", will redistribute wealth in a country to the most wealthy, Real economists will agree with that.
Tax can be used to run a country, or, as in this country, the powerful will see all that money and think, "here is another opportunity to steal it". If anyone is honest with themselves, they will see that is what has been happening for the last 30+ years in our country. Furthermore, those same powerful Americans and Multi-national corporations, HATE to be burdened by tax's, (GE, for example, paid NO corporate taxes last year). SO, they benefit from YOUR tax money, by receiving subsides, and getting contracts, but pay NOTHING to do business in the U.S.. Americans are finally starting to get it.

At least the people abroad can see we are doing something about the people who crashed our country's economy. Heaven knows congress and it's House investigatory committes have not done anything to put anyone in jail.( Who wants to jail their golfing buddy?-or the main financial contributor to their re-election campaign?)

This is excellent news. The world needs to know about the real situation in the United States. The rate of homelessness and hunger in this nation of (so-called plenty) is rising. Unemployment numbers will increase as various financial companies lay off employees. The attitude of people who are not affected by the down turn in this nation has become very insensitive and myopic (what's in it for me or it's not my problem). This is a period of time when Amnesty International and other human rights groups need to start looking reporting on laws being passed that violate basic human rights. An example of questionable laws is the cuts to women's health and reproductive related services; overly-strict state immigration laws; cutbacks to food and housing programs. There are many areas that can be raised as concerns that could help create the catalyst for greater demonstrations in the USA. Global support is welcome and wanted. It is patriotic to express dissent for the status quo. Let's get on the bandwagon and support removal of these reactionary, deadwood "do nothing" Tea Party politicians in Congress and the Senate.

We don't like the top 1%.....

unless it's Kobe, Lady Gagme, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett.

Note that it was $Bill that deregulated Wall Street and tossed Glass-Stengal, but that was OK?

Nope, it wasn't. And he has publically stated that it was a big mistake.

It was an honor to visit and join the protestors during our fall trip to NYC earlier this week. Very peaceful, very thought provoking. Proud to have stood with you and donated on-site to the cause. Differences to tea party/right-wing protests or solutions are simple:

no racism;
no guns or intimidation of any kind;
peaceful bonds of togetherness and we shall overcome;
no misspelled signs;
well thought out and expressed literature;
educated and knowledgeable protestors;
people from across the age and income spectrum;
a sense of commitment to be patriotic Americans without a political allegiance;
the crowd looked like America rather than one sector; and
a serious desire to create long-term economic solutions for everyone!

That's only a FEDERAL income tax figure. It's much, much higher if you count state and local taxes, fees and charges. Not to mention sales tax, which EVERYONE pays. But keep on believing the lie that the working poor, the elderly, the unemployed and the disabled are what's causing the nation's ills. That's what the Republican party wants you to believe, while they undermine American democracy with the help of the corporations.

I don't contend that the poor are causing this country's problems. I contend that the 99% is a fallacy. It's true that a relative few can be considered rich but even in a communist society that is repeated, with a few at the top enjoying great wealth.

There were more people at Busch Stadium watching the Cardinals play the Brewers last night than at all the "Occupy..." gatherings nationwide combined.

There's your 99%'ers.

I doubt that. There are demonstrations at over 190 cities ongoing and growing. But besides that, polls show that an overwhelming number of Americans sympathize with what OWS is doing. Shove that up your pipe and smoke it.

Protest your politicians for handing out corporate welfare by the billions in the form of your tax dollars. Protest the presidents of universities making upwards of $400-$500,000 with fat life time pensions (often double dipping) for driving up the cost of education.

the salary for the coach is paid through the revenue generated by the team itself...the players should be paid too in my opinion...big time programs generate a ton of revenue for the university, the coaches salary is a drop in the bucket
