'What Doesn't Kill Me Makes Me Stronger': The Supercut (VIDEO)

First Posted: 10/13/11 03:20 PM ET Updated: 12/13/11 05:12 AM ET

"What does not destroy me makes me stronger," wrote Friedrich Nietzsche (in German) in 1888, unwittingly inspiring the modern musician's standby. Kelly, Kanye, Jay-Z, Metallica, one and all insist what doesn't kill us makes us...sing it with us now...stronger. Not weaker! Never ever weaker. Here Slacktory's compilation of the most desperate lyric in all of music.

"What doesn't kill me makes me stronger" is by now a cliche. I don't think any of the artists in the clip could name the source of that quote, however stronger it may make their academic credentials.

What doesn't kill me makes me stronger? Jeeeez sometimes it makes you disabled, or depressed, or suicidal instead, but I guess you'll only find those lyrics in a country western song.

Some great songwriters might have something of wisdom in two or three songs out of a whole career but, c'mon, really, don't take hit writers too seriously, the lyrics don't have a lot of deeper meaning, they're just trying to make a buck or three making you believe that. It's a living, Meh.

Just inferring from the video, this seems to be the most consistently industry backed phrase in pop music. It looks like, if you include it, you're guaranteed to hit the airwaves. It's the phrase that can't lose! Damn, there went the hook for my next song...

when you play a country song backwards, you get you wife back, your truck back your dog back etc....when you play a rap song backwards....you still don't know what the hell they're talking about....

I'm a stick in the mud, brought up in the era of good music, I'm talking catoons, classical music with classical background music. BUT I can appreciate HipHop, truely an art form and total emersion in the creative process. Country music is comforting like looking at a photo alblum of days gone by.
So on and on and on, it's not all for money

Hip Hop/Rap has always been 90% sampling of older songs, using the beats/melodies or phrases or all of it. This story is about 30 years late.

and it can all be done from a computer. you don't have to know how to play anything and can still create a song from sampled sounds. buy some software and go to work, no real talent required. easy....

I never realy liked him anyway, but after what he did to Taylor Swift at the awards, I lost all respect for him.

I've long followed that ridiculous statement with: what doesn't kill me, just might maim me. I'm am not will to try a head-on with a semi, in the hopes that it will make me stronger.

That which does not kill me only makes me stronger. Still, it usually hurts like a b*tch and occasionally leaves a nasty scar.
