Alabama Immigrants To DOJ: 'The Situation Here Is Very Dire'

Alabama Immigration

First Posted: 10/14/11 09:50 AM ET Updated: 12/14/11 05:12 AM ET

Department of Justice officials made a surprise appearance at a community forum in Birmingham, Ala. on Thursday evening, encouraging residents to report civil rights violations in the wake of the state's harsh new immigration law.

The law, H.B. 56, requires police and some government officials to demand proof of legal status if they have "reasonable suspicion" a person may be in the country illegally. So far, it has driven many undocumented immigrants and Latino residents out of the state.

Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, and a handful of department staffers and attorneys attended the forum, which was hosted by the local branch of the NAACP and held at Glen Iris Elementary School. Perez and panelists from local immigrant advocacy groups sat at a table at the school, several feet from a banner that said "Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month," and listened as men and women in the room voiced their fears about the law.

Some immigrants said they were unsure how to get to work, because renewing their license plates would now require them to show immigration papers, and any traffic stop could now lead to an officer detecting them as undocumented. Others said they feared sending their children to school, now that public schools might ask their children about their legal status. Some asked whether they should flee the state, leaving their jobs and homes behind.

One man questioned why Alabama legislators would pass such a law, wondering aloud whether it meant Latinos and other immigrants are unwelcome in the state.

"Can anyone tell me the motives behind this law?" he said, according to someone in the room. "We like it here, and we just don't understand why they don't like us."

For the most part, DOJ officials simply listened, taking notes on the concerns raised. They stuck around after the meeting to talk to community members directly, and plan to meet with more on Friday.

The DOJ has made attempts to block the law, which was adopted in the wake of Arizona's controversial immigration law S.B. 1070. But the Alabama law is even harsher: it requires people to prove legal status during virtually all interactions with the government.

"The atmosphere has just been so hostile," Helen Rivas, a community organizer in Birmingham and 30-year Alabama resident, told HuffPost after the forum. "The people who want people gone have done such a good job at poisoning the atmosphere and demonizing [immigrants]. It's really scary."

The DOJ challenged the laws in Arizona and Alabama, successfully blocking most portions of the Arizona law before it was implemented. But it was less successful in blocking the Alabama law. U.S. District Judge Sharon Blackburn ruled on Sept. 28 that most portions of the law could go into effect, despite arguments from the Justice Department that the law preempted federal immigration authority and could lead to civil rights violations.

The Justice Department appealed the decision last week, leaving it in the hands of a higher court.

In the meantime, DOJ officials seem to be trying to assure immigrants and residents of Alabama that their concerns are being heard and addressed.

On Thursday, the department announced a toll-free phone number and email address for people who live in Alabama to report abuses of the law and ask questions. (To reach the Justice Department, call 855-353-1810 or send an email to hb56@usdoj.gov.)

DOJ officials and community leaders in Alabama will meet on Friday with a 19-year-old undocumented immigrant named Victor Palafox, who has been living in Birmingham for 14 years.

Palafox is a founder of Alabama Dreamers for the Future, a group of young people pushing for immigration reform. He spoke to Perez and other justice department officials after the forum, telling them stories of men and women he has met who have already been affected by the law.

"Here in Alabama, the situation is very dire," he told HuffPost after the forum. "Effects are very visible. People are leaving left and right."

Rivas said the organizations she works with, Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice and Latinos Unidas de Alabama, are bombarded with calls from immigrants who are unsure how they should respond to the law. She said it's difficult to tell them because it's still unclear: until the appeals court makes its decision, no one knows whether the law will remain in place.

Still, she said the Justice Department's involvement is a positive step.

"I never thought I'd be hanging out with the FBI and the Department of Justice so much, but they're on our side," Rivas said.

Legal Immigrants and Illegal Immigrants are two very different things...miles apart...one is to be repsected and welcomed, the other should be deported and banned for life...

Nothing can be more ludicrous than cops and lawyers from DOJ attending a conference of law-breakers to promote law-breaking.
Anyone who ordered these DOJ shysters on this fishing expedition against should be tarred-and-feathered and run outta government. Forever.

ssteven37 made a comment on my statement, contradicted me and told me that there is no such thing as an "undocumented immigrant". He must have realized he was erroneous in some of his statements.
{"It is officially called "illegal immigration" in the United States and by the European Union.International governmental and non-governmental organizations, such as the United Nations, the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and others use the term "irregular immigration. "Unauthorized immigration" is another term which is occasionally used to refer to this form of migration. The term "undocumented immigration" is used as well, though it is considered less inclusive than "irregular immigration."}
I research what I say before I put my foot into my mouth and put it into gear.
Irregular immigration has numerous and complex causes, but in general, it consists in people from poor countries seeking better life opportunities in more developed countries, and includes forced migration and voluntary migration. Irregular immigration has impact on many political, economical, social and ethical issues. It is estimated that between 21.4 and 32.1 million (or 10%–15%) of the world's total 214 million international immigrants fit this status.[8]
Come back. ssteven37, all is forgiven.

This is going to effect the econmics of this state very badly. Who is going to harvest the food the farmers need to get to market? OH Yea a white boy or girl, think again. We tired this in California many years ago and it did not work. California said you want unemployment go pick strawberries. The farmers would not hire them, they could not do the back breaking work. You try standing bent over for hours at a time in the summer heat and see how long you last. Write to me and let me know how well you did.

Hmm, let;'s the balance
About 10,000 children will not attend Alabama schools
Savings to the state taxpayers ( K-12) About $2 BILLION dollars!

Strawberries go up in price by .50 a pound.

Hmm..... We'll take it.

You are confused. Food will just rot, farmers will just not farm.

Food shortages are better than kids in school though, right?

Ps. The children you are so angry with are usually Americans. So in reality, you want to punish children for the mistakes parents make.

As the hispanics start leaving the state, it won't take long to see how this law effects the economy in Alabama. It will start with a smaller amount of revenue coming from the city's and state's sales tax. Fix your own potholes, take your trash to the dump yourself---"we had to make cuts somewhere"! Then less people buying from small businesses (restaurants, salons, supermarkets, etc). Even Home Depot and Walmart will feel the pinch. Then, who will clean those pools, maintain the lawns, replace those roofs, etc.? I believe there is a movie titled "A Day Without A Mexican."
03:20 PM on 10/16/2011
Gee, I wonder how they did it BEFORE the Mexicans came?

How did we get those jobs done in the 50's,60's and 70's?

I recently stayed at a hotel outside of Portland Oregon. the maid who cleaned my room was a young Anglo girl from North Dakota.

When you don't have illegal aliens, you hire Americans at a higher wage (usually).

And, by the way, the hotel rooms were quite reasonable so it did not raise the price by much.
03:46 PM on 10/16/2011
My point was the economy. I am just talking numbers. As the latinos leave the state, there will be fewer and fewer people spending money.

So is everyone else. You just have to pay a little more, that's all.

Is it worth paying a little more to live in a first world country?

I reopen this to point out how prejudicial and bigotted many commentators are here while calling me "vacuous" and attempting to say, that I sterotype Americans on this issue. {" Give me a break. Every time I see another pregnant Hispanic at the walking around, a pile of Hispanics replacing a roof I am reminded of just how wrong the government is in not enforcing our immigration laws."} A comment by an avid attacker of mine, Bob Calvin. That is his commentator name on here. he makes this comment. He flops around and claims to have been in Puerto Rico for 8 years. And attempts to defend his derogatoru use of "hispanics", only after called on it. Puerto Ricans, 100% American citizens are Hispanics-Latinos.
"ILLEGALS, what many make sound like a dirty word come from all countries, nationalites and backgrounds. They are not criminals, nor bad people. Just undocumented residents for a while. Many of you wer once illegals, until you became citizens.
I hope that every Hispanic-Latino person, or person who is not a bigot, or hypocrite sees this and stays far away from Bob Calvin. Hitler had his mentalityl Raather, he has Hitler's mentality, along with "A GEORGE, another commentator, who by his own admission wishes to "wipe out all illegals. Read his on here. Who is vacuous, Bob? How about veonomous?

you quite obviously do not understand the difference between an illegal alien, and an immigrant...an illegal alien has crossed our borders illegally and is breaking the law (a criminal)....an immigrant has come here legally, following due process, and is not breaking the law (not a criminal)...understand? illegal does not mean foriegn, illegal means illegal (against the law)...there is no such thing as an "undocument immigrant", that's just the latest term used by the leftist liberals to try to seem politically correct, when they are in fact violating federal law by not enforcing it
03:29 PM on 10/16/2011
I submit the following:

I believe that almost all of the bleeding heart liberals fall into one of several categories:

1. Government workers who, for all intents and purposes, have no chance of losing their job to an illegal alien.

2. People who have not worked in construction or any other job that used to pay a living wage before the "invasion".

3. Retired people who have no chance of losing their pension checks.

4. Business owners who exploit the slave labor.

5. Academics who have no chance of losing their job to an illegal alien.

6. Legal Hispanics who are more interested in identifying with" La Raza" and/or their illegal alien relatives than in assuming the role of a loyal American.

7. Illegal aliens themselves.

8. Clueless progressives who would follow the liberal line off the cliff( like so many sheep).
