IPhone 4S Release: Apple Starts Selling Latest Handset October 14

First Posted: 10/14/11 09:55 AM ET   Updated: 12/14/11 05:12 AM ET

NEW YORK (CHIP CUTTER, AP/THE HUFFINGTON POST) -- A faster iPhone with better software and an improved camera went on sale Friday as hundreds of buyers camped out for hours to be among the first to get one.

About 200 people were at Apple's Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan as the iPhone 4S went on sale at 8 a.m. Steve Wozniak, who created Apple with Steve Jobs in a Silicon Valley garage in 1976, was first in line at a store in Los Gatos, Calif.

Many said the event resembled a remembrance to Jobs, who died last week.

Emily Smith, a 27-year-old user experience designer in New York, checked in to the line on the location-centric social network Foursquare. She got a virtual Steve Jobs badge that read: "Here's to the crazy ones. ThankYouSteve."

Others joked that the 4S model stood "for Steve."

Many people came out despite the fact that they could have ordered phones online and had them shipped to their homes or offices.

Apple and phone companies in seven countries started taking orders for the iPhone 4S last Friday. Apple said Monday that more than 1 million orders came in, breaking the record set by last year's model, which was available in fewer countries and on fewer carriers.

The death of Jobs could be affecting sales. Marketing experts say products designed by widely admired figures such as Jobs usually see an upsurge in sales after their death.

Una Chen, a 24-year-old banker, said she was just happy to swap out her BlackBerry Bold for the new iPhone, particularly after a BlackBerry outage affected her phone this week.

"It's not good to have a phone and not be able to use it," Chen said.

Wozniak got in line at the California store even though he already had two new phones on the way. He told television station NBC11 on Thursday that while he waited for the store's opening Friday morning, he planned on getting caught up on his email and chatting with fans.

In the U.S., sales were beginning at 8 a.m. in each time zone. They were available at Apple stores, along with those of the three partner carriers, AT&T Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp. and Verizon Wireless. Some Best Buy, Target and Walmart stores and authorized resellers also carried the phones.

The base model of the iPhone 4S costs $199 in the U.S. with a two-year contract. Customers have a choice of white or black.

The phones also debuted Friday in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Britain. They are coming to 22 more countries by the end of the month.

The phone - Apple's fifth - has a faster processor and an improved camera compared with last year's model. However, some customers and investors were disappointed that Apple didn't launch a more radical new model. It's been more than a year since Apple's previous model was released.

People queue outside the Apple store to purchase discounted iPhone 4's in Hong Kong on October 14, 2011. Tensions were high at Apple's plush new harbourside store in the Chinese territory as people queued to buy a maximum of five iPhone 4's at a time, sometimes only to hand them over to 'friends' outside the store and try to return for more. Make it here and add in healthcare and pension costs etc, the phone would cost twice as much. The Walmarting of America means lowest price possible for everything.

They call it "iPhone", but it's actually a computer.
And the 4S is indeed faster.

What I find amazing is that all these people who line up to toss out perfectly good phones for a new one are contributing hugely to conflict minerals and the degradation of the planet. No doubt there are gazillions of these rabid phone buyers who consider themselves "green". This mania for gadgets is just sad. Cell phones are great and do amazing things but do we need a new one every eight months? The cost in human misery and to the planet is terrible. just sayin'.

Nobody "tosses them out." An older model can be sold, used as an iPod Touch, or even recycled.

I realize that - I wasn't being literal. You are not getting the issue - recycliing doesn't do anything when there is a continual flow of conflict minerals required to make the new ones. The mine workers in describe it as "hell on earth" so, I hope everyone enjoys the new gadgets every eight months I guess you all deserve your toys.

I just ABSOLUTELY....don't have to have one. If it came in red and had a handy pair of tweezers and a metal toothpick I might consider it, but until then I'll skip the lines.

As I type on one, the only "disappointing" aspect is that Huffpost drank the Ballmer kool aid and keeps taking the checks to run negative headlines. MS always rolls money into planting negative stories because they can't stand to see anyone else succeed at anything. HP has been bought. Clear and simple.

It's astounding that so many people compare things against RUMORS and then call them disappointing. Many people are upset we don't all have our own personal jet packs like was 'promised' several decades ago, but any reasonable person would've known it wasn't gonna happen. It's like when growth doesn't meet random d_____bag 'analyst' expectations, they say companies/products are FAILING if they only do 11.5% growth instead of 12% or more. It's insane to think that way.

I like how disappointing is in quotes because it's total BS. Real disappointing that they broke their own record. You know apple kills when everyone trips over themselves trying to find a negative. Played with a droid the other day and yes its still bad. iPhone is my choice.
04:12 AM on 10/15/2011
Oh I hate the iPhone, but I will buy one., LOL

Hey, they make great products. They improve their products. This is why people buy their products. Well, the other company should take notes. Just make what you have better!

Time to toss my 1992 three-pound, three-watt Motorola bag phone for something new. But I really don't want to part with something that has such cute illuminated number buttons and a long, black antenna. Makes me feel so...masculine.

This is iNsanity!

It is a PHONE. it cannot cure AIDS, revive the economy or cook dinner.

It makes calls, takes pictures and plays Angry Birds. That's it.

Grow up, people.

It's not a phone. It's a computer. It is a tool.
A tool that could conceivably save time for someone who will cure AIDS, revive the economy, or cook dinner.
If all you can think to do with it is make calls, take pictures, and play Angry Birds, well, that's on you.

Grow up? You first.

I was traveling one time, pulling my cargo trailer, and the fender came loose and was scraping one of the tires. I was driving through a small town and had no idea where to go for supplies to fix it. I got on my phone and googled a home improvement store and there was one less than a mile away. The phone pinpointed my location and led me there. I never would have found it on my own. I can't really put a price on the relief I felt being able to do this, and that is not the only time I've needed it for something like that.

You can tell people to grow up until you're blue in the face. Won't change the usefulness of these devices.

Camping out just to buy a new product is, simply, ridiculous. And a little sad, too. You think they're going to run out of them? Worried someone else might have one first? Go work with the homeless for a while and find out what really matters.

How about you go work with the homeless instead of telling other people what they should do?

((( "I hear this one has an antenna." )))

The iPhone 4S has two antennas, actually, and it can intelligently switch between them. The dual antennas can also be used in tandem to double download speeds on networks that support HSDPA.

The overpriced and underpowered Apple products wouldn't exist without the constant hype by Fanboy apologists like you.

Go sleep out in line somewhere as a tribute to St. Jobs.
