Rupert Murdoch Heckled At California Education Summit

SAN FRANCISCO — Protesters from the Occupy Wall Street movement heckled News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch during a speech at an education forum Friday, accusing the media mogul of trying to profit from public education.

Activists repeatedly interrupted Murdoch as he gave a keynote speech at a downtown San Francisco hotel about how technology could help transform the nation's public education system.

"Equality in education, not privatization!" one woman shouted as security guards escorted her out of the ballroom of the Palace Hotel, which hosted the National Summit on Education Reform.

"Corporations own all the media in the world. Why should they not own all the education as well?" activist Joe Hill yelled sarcastically. Hill, who was dressed as the "Count" character from the TV show "Sesame Street," also was pushed out of the meeting room.

Murdoch appeared unfazed.

"It's OK, a little controversy makes everything more interesting," he said to audience applause before continuing his half-hour speech.

About half a dozen hecklers were escorted out of the hotel after they disrupted Murdoch's speech but said they were not arrested. They joined about two dozen protesters holding signs and chanting "Occupy Wall Street! Occupy Sesame Street!" outside the conference.

Speaking outside, Hill accused Murdoch and other corporate leaders of trying to "use the economic crisis to further privatize education and divert more public funds into private corporate interests."

Murdoch appeared as part of a two-day education forum sponsored by the Foundation for Excellence in Education, a group chaired by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. The organization champions school vouchers, charter schools, performance pay for teachers and digital learning.

"We need to tear down an education system designed for the 19th century and replace it with one suited for the 21st," Murdoch said during his morning address.

"You don't get change by plugging in computers at schools designed for the industrial age," Murdoch said. "You get it by developing technology that rewrites the rules of the game by centering learning around the learner."

Last year, News Corp. acquired Wireless Generation, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based company that provides software and services to K-12 schools. In August, New York's comptroller rejected a $27 million contract with the educational technology company because of the phone-hacking scandal involving News Corp.'s British newspapers.

On Thursday afternoon, more than 100 protesters, mostly San Francisco teachers, picketed outside the hotel, protesting Murdoch's presence at the education conference.

And no doubt teachers and unions will be blamed for resisting reform. Wake up America, your public education is not just being sold to the highest bidder, it is being given away by politicians at the local, state, and federal levels in order to make a buck.

Fight the power and stand up for real education. I applaud the teachers that stepped inside and outside that conference center.

F&F. Rich folks went to public schools too. Many Americans who have become wealthy owe their success to public education. Scapegoating teachers and unions is the shame of The Republican Party.

Will Murdoch ever do anything to repent the pain and suffering that he has perpetrated against the American People by taking responsibility for his hiring Roger Ailles and allowing FOX News to be turned inro the Republican Propaganda Machine? I think that when he stands in front of the Almighty the pain and suffering that he has caused will be visited upon him.

The message is quite clear. There are no trust any longer in corporate citizens, for they are mainly concerned with wealth, profits, and economic greed. Corporate citizens are now seen as exploiters who are responsible for the financial mess that is presently occurring in the globe.

What does "centering learning around the learner" mean? Murdoch fosters so much ignorance in the world -- that he's giving a keynote speech on education is tragic. Proof that wealth is the measure of all things in this day and age.

Want better education in America? Get rid of these so called privet collages that take your student lone money and good luck to you.

If the classes don't transfer to a REAL UNIVERSITY they are worthless.

Who were the people applauded Rupert Murdoch? Why is he being asked to make a speech anywhere so soon after the News International scandal?? The man's staff is facing criminal charges for hacking people's phones and bribing police and government officials. His network spreads propaganda. How can he get applause. It's like applauding Goebbels. I guess some would say his propaganda campaigns were brilliant and he was successful at what he did but he's hardly someone who deserves applause. I swear Americans and their avarice, we love anybody who makes a buck.

They both have educational software they want to sell....Jeb already made the state of Florida buy his brother's Neil's COW's during his tenure as Florida's governor...it was a multi-million dollar disaster for the taxpaying citizens of the state.

Money and power attracts money and power - - and a "no hands on" school of "teaching" makes people who are easier to control.

Can't we send Murdoch and his witchy wife to Australia? He and his minions are a good part of the dumbing down of America! (And I still think Wendy was the one that put the guy with the cream pie up to it!)

i agree with you regarding the cream pie debacle being staged. it was simply too perfect in its execution. not to mention, how on earth did the guy get past lots of security with a cream pie and then be seated so closely. not believable.

LOL! I am friends with a young woman from Australia, who was traveling through America in the early 90's. Her car broke down and I fixed it for her. My husband then gave it a good go over and replaced two fan belts, rotated her tires and gave her emergency lights and flares in case she needed it. We didn't charge her and she kept in touch with me all these years later. She wrote recently that Murdoch is hated by the Aussie's and care to have nothing more to do with him or his kids, or (as they call her) Witchy Wendy! LOL, so funny. F&F
