Pet Serial Killer Could Target Humans Next, Texas Police Fear

Police in Houston, Texas are asking for the public's help in solving the separate killings of Lucy Garcia's two dogs and horse.

The victim count is at three for an unknown killer in Texas who has been targeting pets belonging to a Houston family.

The three slayings unfolded over the past week and a half in separate incidents -- and as the killings escalate, police worry the perpetrator may target humans next.

"We're obviously very concerned because if someone would do this to these three animals, we don't know what they might do next to people," said Houston police Sergeant Virginia Brasher.

The animals belong to Lucy Garcia, a long-time resident of the 2000 block of Charles Road in northeast Houston, and her three children, ages 10, 14 and 15.

"We are a very quiet and close family who live in a quiet neighborhood," said Garcia, who reported she has no idea why her pets are being killed.

The first victim, a collie named Little Buddy, was shot to death on Oct. 3. Four days later, a Rottweiler named P.J. was discovered poisoned. The most recent and most brutal slaying occurred on Oct. 8, when the family's beloved horse, Angel, was stabbed to death in her stall. Police say someone slit the animal's throat.

"It's just a very disturbing scene and there was just a large amount of blood," Brasher said. "[The suspect] let the horse bleed out. And it looked like possibly the person was there while the horse was bleeding; they were smudging blood up the walls -- just very disturbing."

The same night the horse was killed, a chicken that was being kept in a pen near the horse's stall was so severely injured that it had to be euthanized. Police are not classifying the chicken's death as the work of the killer.

"The family can't figure out why they are being targeted, and the investigators do not know why," Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith said.

Each of the animals had been in the family for several years. Garcia owned P.J. since before her oldest child was born. Little Buddy was five years old and Angel had been a fourth birthday gift to her youngest daughter six years ago.

All of the kids are having a difficult time coping with the animals' deaths, Garcia said.

"My children would wake up every morning before they went to school, feed them, and give them their water for the day. In the afternoon, when they came home, they would take care of them again," she said.

Her youngest daughter is devastated over the loss of her horse, which her mom said was so gentle she could ride it bareback.

"She wants her horse," Garcia said. "And I can't give Angel to her. It really breaks my heart. I love horses. For someone to hurt my child's horse and make her hurt... That is what gets me."

According to Brasher, there have been no other reports of similar killings in the area.

"This is about as disturbing a case as I've ever seen as far as an animal being killed," Brasher said.

Anyone with information about the animal killings case is asked to contact the Houston Police Department Major Offenders Division at 713-308-3100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

Three animals belonging to the same family were killed on seperate occasions? Sounds like the one who did it knows the family personally. I'm not a police officer but how about that for a possible lead?

Why would anyone want to hurt an innocent animal. I really feel for the family, especially the little girl who lost her horse. This would of had special meaning since it was a birthday gift. This is one sick person. I hope they find this sicko and throw the book at him or her. Most likely a male or males. A woman could not kill a horse. Look at so called friends or even people they work with Or maybe family. Someone who does know the families movements.

TEXAS, what a terrible to have to raise a family!

It is tragic and criminal that these poor animals were killed. But I noticed that they also didn't seem to be well cared for to begin with. The pictures showed the Rottweiler was kept chained, and the horse looked scrawny and undernourished. I'm not sure these people should have even had any pets if they couldn't care for them.

I don't know how long the connection between serial killers and the torture of animals has been known but I know that Ted Bundy & Jeffery Dahmer both tortured animals when they were younger. However, it doesn't seen like that applies to this case. This seems to be a personal vendetta & if I were the family, I'd be pretty scared. Killing animals is bad enough, but to target family pets... What a heartless human being! I feel so bad for the children. I hope this person is caught and is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Personally, I think laws against people who hurt/kill animals should be much stricter! "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated" ~Gandhi

I wouldn't be too surprised if this person was an animal activist "liberating" the animal's souls. Kind of ironic, you people probably think he's doing it for torture. Thin line between you and "Him/Her" w/ all of the extreme comments down below.

I would be surprised if it was an animal rights activist, it was far more likely a racist T-bagger!

I'm glad the police are taking this seriously and aknowelding that someone who can do this to animals also has the capacity to do it to people. This poor family. I can't imagine how upsetting it is for those kids. This is work of a pure monster and like somone else already said, should just be set on fire. Lord knows if someone even harmed one of my pets I'd be in prison for the things I'd do to that person.

Oh, and lest I forget, don't ever let me find out that you are treating an animal inhumanely. At 57 I am as feisty as ever, and will either make sure that you never parent another animal again, and/or will make sure that you lose custody of said animal.

Around 30 years ago, I was an exercise rider at Belmont Racetrack. I had an assortment of animals, goats, pigs, chickens, my velcroed at my hip dog, and multiple barn cats. Apparently, some of the grooms followed a religion where sacrificing goats was commonplace. I can remember sleeping in the stalls with my horses, goats and dog and attacking the son of a bitch with a pitchfork when he tried to steal my goat. Mind you, I was at that time 5'2 and weighed about 120 lbs. After I got through with the kidnapper, he needed an ambulance and from thereafter, NO ONE ever messed with me or any of my animals.....and to this day, at 57, I will KILL anyone who harms any FURRY child in my presence.

statisticly it's almost always a male in these situations. A cowardly one mind you, but a male none the less.
