'Jobs For Justice' Rally Brings Thousands To National Mall

Jobs For Justice

ERIC TUCKER   10/15/11 08:04 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — Thousands of people led by the Rev. Al Sharpton rallied Saturday near the Washington Monument, where speakers called for easier job access and decried the gulf between rich and poor before the crowd marched to the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.

The rally was intended to drum up support for President Barack Obama's jobs plan, which died Tuesday in the U.S. Senate. But speakers used the platform for varied causes, including condemning state laws requiring voter identification at the polls and protesting the recent execution of Troy Davis, a Georgia man convicted of killing an off-duty police officer. Davis maintained his innocence until his death and attracted thousands of supporters worldwide even though courts repeatedly ruled there wasn't enough evidence to exonerate him.

Chanting for jobs and justice, many demonstrators carried banners for their labor unions and wore pins or T-shirts bearing King's likeness. Obama is scheduled to speak Sunday at the dedication ceremony for the memorial, the first monument dedicated to a black leader on the National Mall.

Sharpton, the featured speaker at the March on Washington for Jobs and Justice, blasted the Senate for its failure to pass Obama's $450 billion jobs bill. The measure includes an extension of a payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits, as well as money to help local governments keep teachers and other workers on the job.

Obama and Senate Democratic leaders plan to try to pass elements of the measure, and the president used his weekly Internet and radio address Saturday to urge Republicans to support his economic proposals – or else explain to their constituents why they didn't.

"If you can't get the jobs bill done in the suites, then we will get the jobs bill done in the streets," Sharpton said to cheers and applause.

He told the crowd that King would have supported their cause "because he stood for those who were cast down and cast back." King's eldest son, Martin Luther King III, was also among the speakers.

"Over 45 years ago, my father talked about a redistribution of wealth. In fact, that is probably why he was killed," King said. "Because he said if America is going to survive responsibly, then it must have a redistribution of wealth."

Among those who attended Saturday's rally was Kathie Williams, a part-time administrator for the Howard County, Md., parks and recreation department. She'd like to find full-time work but has struggled to do so despite an active search.

"No one has responded to me," Williams said.

Belinda Shade, 56, of Waldorf, Md., works as a special education school administrator but said the economy still makes her insecure.

"Right now I have a job, but I don't know what might happen tomorrow," Shade said, later adding, "There are no jobs. People are really hurting. Everything is coming apart as a result."

District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray held a separate protest demanding greater autonomy for the district government before joining in the larger gathering. Congress must approve the local government's budget, and the mayor was arrested earlier this year as he protested a congressional budget deal that included restrictions on how the city could spend funds.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers were among the other speakers.

Nonetheless, Sharpton said the rally was not intended as an overtly political statement or as part of the president's re-election bid.

"This is not about Obama," he said. "This is about my mama."

The unemployed did not tank the economy. They are the casualties of the greed and excess of a wildly underregulated American financial sector. The sector that tanked the economy. I'm not sure why anyone thinks it rational to continue to throw good money after bad. They are not job creators. They are job cremators. That is just reality.

Way too many Republicans who don't give a damn about People's jobs that were stolen because Corporations lost money when the Middle Class got screwed by Wall Street and Companies that moved their operations outside the US which were paid for by US Government subsidies to create jobs overseas. All Americans thanks to these Companies, will be selling Hamburgers to each other. It's time not to redistribute the wealth, more to take the taxes Americans have paid to move jobs overseas and start using that money to create jobs here. Vote out Can't-or, Boehner and McConnell and take back the Country. Do not vote in any of the Republican Clown Posse.

Got it from the Heritage Foundation's manifesto. Isn't that what this is all about, really?

Encouraging so/cio/path/olo/gy in other humans so those with obscene wealth and no morality or minimal conscience can feel no remorse when they make money and deny health care and basic services to those around them, just to make more profit?

They even invoke the name of Jesus to do it, and talk themselves into thinking they are superior in intelligence, and possess permission from Jesus to do it .

Sounds like soc/io/ pa/ th/o/l..o/gy to me.

Feel guilty? I doubt it.

I believe it is time to complete abolish the Federal government and give every state the right to do as they wish for their state. When natural disasters stricks like a hurricane, tornado, wild fire; let the state that is affected take care of the problem. And think of all the money that would be saved by not paying that branch of government. While they are at ablishing, do away with the Supreme Court, the legislative branch, and the executive branch. Just elect 50 Presidents for the 50 states. Let's see how that works for everybody.
Every state just take care of their own little problems. Damn, that's the best idea I had all year.

What do these people want - well that is easy, more handouts. All government can do is put bandaids on the economy. You also note that Obama's jobs program is aimed at union workers for which many are public employees. What about the rest of the people who needs jobs? What does his jobs program do for them? At any this is all about reelection - vote buying - nothing else. At any rate, only increased consumer demand will cause business and corporations to add jobs. People who have jobs and corporations are holding onto their money because they are unsure of what the government will do next. As long as there is uncertaintly they will continue to hold back.

Oh yes jobs. This from the Heritage foundation. After paying the new health premiums, the minimum wage, payroll taxes, and unemployment insurance taxes, hiring a full-time worker will cost employers at least $10.03 per hour. Full-time workers with family health plans will cost $13.75 per hour. Employers who hire workers with productivity below these rates will lose money. Businesses employing less skilled workers will probably respond by dumping their employees onto the federally subsidized health care exchanges and replacing full-time positions with part-time jobs.

OK I STILL want someone to tell me how this convulsion of a bill that has NO NEW JOBS in it can even be called a Jobs bill?? By Obamas own words it is basically a payoff to union labor. Infrastructure, teacher, public works employees, ALL UNION, NOT ONE SINGLE NEW JOB. This Sharpton is just another racist jumping on the Obama bandwagon. Oops he and Obama are old buds aren't they?

If you were as inept as this administration I'd have a few snide comments for you too. Why does telling the truth make me racist? I read somewhere that Sharpton has long standing ties with Obamas Chicago cronies , the reverend Wright being one. You know the guy that preaches hatred against white people? And I am the racist?? Lets look at your CHAMPEENS in the last couple weeks, ( and yes I misspelled it on purpose ) Solyndra for OVER $500 MILLION, it comes out that one of the principles was and is a campaign bundler for Obama, Pacific corporate group $737 MILLION it comes out Pelosi's brother in law is seond in command there, FAst and Furious, American supplied weapons KILLING American agents, AND NOW Obama is REFUSING to release documents to cooporate with the investigation. OHH and lets not forget your swell hero SUING Arizona in defense of illegal nationals here as criminal elements. THEN just this morning it went public that the terrorist in the "attempted" Saudi assassination was arrested WEEKS ago and held until it could be used as campaign propaganda. How swell!! Whats not to like about this administration?

No, Cain ain't black enough for us. Besides, Cain is a clown, not black or white.
02:41 PM on 10/16/2011
Is this racist to point out or is is a serious point?

"In the past few weeks, more than 400,000 young black men entered American high schools as freshmen. Four years from now, fewer than half of them will get diplomas.

That's according to a new study from the Schott Foundation for Public Education. It found that only 47 percent of black male students entering high school in 2003 graduated in 2008. For white males, the graduation rate was 78 percent."

You want a job?

Unemployment by education level:

Less than High School 14.0%
High School Grad, No College 9.7%
Some College or Associate Degree 8.4%
Bachelor's Degreeor Higher 4.2%”

Okay, the job outlook is poor. Many people with multiple skills and degrees can't find jobs. What's the solution? We've already tried to stimulate the economy with various govt monies, but the results were temporary. The economy is sick, but there are limits on what govt can do to cure it. One thing I do know is that the economy is cyclical. Sooner or later things will get better. Then there will be more demand for workers. In the meantime there is much pain, but we've already extended unemployment benefits to 99 weeks.
02:19 PM on 10/16/2011
Personally I like WArren Buffets rule. Anytime the deficit is more than 3% of GDP NO Member of Congress or Senate shall be eligible for re election. Government would drive UP GDP to keep themselves employed. NAFTA would be gutted ( thank God, another useless money pit ) Odd how nothing is being said on here about Obamas proposed Free trade agreement with Columbia that is estimated to take ANOTHER 140,000 American jobs. BUT GDP going up would drive employment up. Things aren't going to get better with more and more jobs and businesses leaving America

PS To all the trolls caterwauling about BIG GOVERNMENT!

President Obama and the Democrats have been more successful at cutting the fat from the budget than President Bush ever was. It’s the other way around, Democrats spend less and Republicans actually spend more, just look at the previous administration — multi-billion dollar surpluses to a record $1.4 trillion deficit for the 2009 budget.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/jan/14/obama-wins-more-cuts-in-spending-than-bush/
02:10 PM on 10/16/2011
Pffffft I read your link. To anyone with a brain it raises more questions than answers. BUT I will ask YOU a question There was NO surplus from Clinton, that is a flat LIE. He had a decline in deficit spending as did Bush. Clinton had around 8 TRILLION deficit and Bush was around the same UNTIL the Dems took control of Congress in 2006. THIS ADMINISTRATION has smoked 5 TRILLION more than ANY administration in history. Personally I'm more concerned with the money than numbers of people and the Dems CLEARLY have the WORST record there. So How do you account for 5 TRILLION dollars spent on NOTHING? How do you account for Obama giving loan guarantees to his campaign bundler in the Solyndra scandal?. How do you account for Pelosi's brother in law getting $737 MILLION in loan guarantees in Pacific Corporate group. The smoke and mirrors numbers of employees dont change the dollar amounts this miserable Administration has blown. Welcome to the most corrupt administration in history

Every single Republican today talks about being a Reagan conservative. This is a conservative that (supposedly) believes in small government, reducing federal spending and ultimately runs a lean and mean government.

In fact HISTORICALLY, it is has been Democratic presidents who have reduced the size of the federal government. The Republicans have lied to the people so much that I believe the current crop somehow BELIEVES the history as they have been told, rather than researching the facts for themselves. This may be a stretch, but I am trying to give them the benefit of the doubt.

According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, which tracks the number of employees per year, the data shows that the “conservatives” for small government are really just big government conservatives. I know that is an oxymoron, but numbers don’t lie.

Obama Has 273,000 Fewer government employees than Ronald Reagan did!
Republican administrations always push gov't employment higher.

Here are the figures:

None of the Republicans I know have any affection or respect for Reagan (and I know plenty; I am from a red state and live in a red state). Of course, when pressed, they'd all admit that Reagan was much less of a disaster than Bush.

Small government is not even possible; this is a large nation with a large and diverse population so the idea of having small government or disliking 'big government' is just silly.

We need effective, efficient and representative (serving the AMERICAN people instead of special interests) government and neither the Repubs or the Dems have delivered anything close for years and years.

Overgeneralizing ('every single Republican today') isn't any more acceptable when people who aren't Repubs do it than when people who are Repubs do.

The issues always resonate with people who are engaged and involved. More and more Americans are getting engaged and involved. It's time to deal with the problems we have and get them solved.

What I find funny they always bring up the name of Reagan. Yet he raised taxes 6 or 7 times. He cut and ran with the bombing of the embassy. And today he would not get any support from the radicals of the right. What I want to ask is why any time they mention his name. The left does throw that mud pie at them?
