Robert Downey Jr. Calls For Mel Gibson Forgiveness At American Cinematheque Awards

Now perhaps Hollywood's leading superhero, Robert Downey Jr. is working to swoop in and save the career of one of his best friends.

The man behind the armor of "Iron Man" and beneath the derby cap of Sherlock Holmes accepted the big prize at the American Cinematheque Awards on Friday, where the theme of the night was the remarkable turnaround that revived his own career. A teen actor and Oscar nominee in his mid-20s, Downey saw his career marred by drugs and alcohol throughout the mid-late 90s, with substance landing in rehab and jail far more often than places of honor at awards shows.

After being feted by co-stars and friends (which you can read all about at Deadline), Downey was presented his award by his "Air America" co-star Mel Gibson, who made a surprise appearance at the show.

“This is my f*ckin’ time,” Downey said on stage. “Mel and I have the same lawyer, same publicist and same shrink. I couldn’t get hired and he cast me. He said if I accepted responsibility – he called it hugging the cactus – long enough my life would take meaning and if he helped me I would help the next guy. But it was not reasonable to assume the next guy would be him.”

Then, he did just as Gibson predicted: called for forgiveness for that next guy.

“Unless you are without sin, and if you are you are in the wrong (expletive) industry, you should forgive him and let him work,” he said, as relayed by Deadline.

Gibson has had a rough last decade. He raised complains amongst the Jewish community with his film "The Passion of the Christ," with Jewish leaders believing it had an anti-semitic message, and two years after that, he was caught on tape drunkenly ranting against the Jews while being arrested for driving under the influence. His rants have also extended to diatribes of racial inspiration, while his angry monologues against ex Oksana Grigorieva have been well-publicized, as well.

Gibson's film with Jodie Foster, "The Beaver," was well-received by critics this year but flopped at the box office. He was recently announced as the producer and potentially director of an upcoming film about Judah Maccabee, which also raised eyebrows.

As for Downey, he'll star in this fall's "Sherlock Holmes 2," and next summer's long-awaited superhero teamup, "The Avengers," as Iron Man. He'll also remake the "Perry Mason" films, and it was just announced that he will star in "Accidental Genius."

Don't forget, most of Hollywood completely absolved Roman Polanski of his sins. Thanks to the pressure from his famous "friends" for his "contributions to the industry" (no mention of his contributions to the pathology of sex), the (cough) "justice" system effectively absolved Polanski of any wrongdoing too.

Gibson effed up BIG time. Wonder if Rob has his nose back in the Downey flakes again. The fact that Gibson was drunk during his belligerent, racist diatribe doesn't absolve him of anything. In vino veritas, right? In "whine" we trust?

I used to love Mel Gibson, but he's messed up. I can no more forgive him and patronize his movies than reconcile with my ex-husband. Sometimes the damage done to a relationship is irreversible.

I don't think so, Robert Downey, Jr. That's the problem these days; we don't hold people accountable for disdainful behaviour. The public 'forgiving' Mel Gibson for his obvoius issues will not change what he truly believes...he hates Jews and everybody else. He will never get my support. And I may have to cancel you too, Mr. Downey Jr., for supporting this Racist.

Ok Robert Downey Jr., I'll bite. You want everyone to forgive Mel Gibson because you were forgiven once, right? Fine! He should be forgiven! But lets not act as if the crime was equal! You were a coke head. No one could get you off drugs. You were causing harm to yourself and you were not known for being hateful to others.

Mel Gibson on the other hand is a racist, anti-Semitic, adulterous, misogynistic, woman beater! Mel Gibson has been living in judgment and hate for others for years. Oh that reminds me, he is a liar as well. He has been accused of being homophobic and racist before and he said that it was all untrue but we know better now thanks to his audio recorded rant directed at his mistress. I found the comment where he said that she deserves to be sexually violated by a pack of "N*****s" and his belief that he is entitled to fell-atio [in the hot tub] whenever he want it, to be really hard to move past.

The fact is, we have not seen any acts of contrition on his part yet you believe that he should be forgiven. Forgive him? Yes. But that does not mean we have to make him richer by supporting his films. He has not changed! He has not hit rock bottom! He is still what he has been all along and that is a great liar! But, he is forgiven!

I'm not a fan of Gibson's movies (though I do like "Braveheart"), and Lord knows I'm not a fan religious or political beliefs...and his disgusting racist/misogynist rants to his ex-girlfriend (though I think she's a skanky gold-digger) show that he's in need of SERIOUS psychiatric help. But he has also been known to be very generous and kind, and a good father to all his children.

So I forgive him. I hope he can get his life back on track.

THIS IS WHY I WILL WATCH MEL GIBSONS MOVIES - BECAUSE I REALIZE THAT HOLLYWOOD MADE HIM LOSE HIS MIND...

Actor Jim Caviezel has claimed his Hollywood career was wrecked by playing Jesus.
He said he was ‘rejected in my own industry’ after taking on the lead role in Mel Gibson's controversial movie ‘The Passion of the Christ’.
Since playing the son of God in the 2004 film he said offers had dried up and he is shunned by many within the industry.

Mel should kick down some of that 200 million he made from "The Passion", and finance some movies for both himself and Caviezel to star in. Problem solved.

While I sense you are not quite in agreement with me, I do think your idea is a good one! Caviezel is an excellent actor and deserves to be in film.

Read a great article;
Darlene Love, a costar in four Lethal Weapon movies who is African-American, says Gibson "has been a brother and friend to me. I love and support him 100 percent."

Whatever caused Gibson's controlled intensity to erupt into outright fury, he must now deal with the consequences and try and put his shattered life back together. "People can slam Mel all they want, and the guy has made some truly dreadful mistakes, but don't count him out," says Mount. "The talent that he has cannot be lost. His personal life is something he needs to get under control. And if he does that, then gradually he will come back from this."

From all I've heard, Gibson is a j-off. However, he's a really great actor. The man has an immense amount of talent.

I agree with RDJ. I'm not a Mel fan and probably never will be but Hollywood should not stand in judgment of anyone. Let the man work and if the audience decides that they don't want to pay to see him- or they do- then that's their right.

No one is stopping him from financing his own movies. Other producers aren't so interested if they aren't named Jodi Foster. He's not a bankable star these days, he's got no draw at the box office. People don't want to see him, they don't wish to support him financially with their ticket purchases, and I for one will continue to change the channel when his films are on TV. You don't financially support those who continue to work towards your families and friends determent. He's made his bed, now he gets to be retired in it.

That's for the box office to decide- not you. But the last film he was cast for the let him go before filming ever started- so there has been no real test of his box office draw- post scandal. And the Jodie Foster film doesn't count since it was released with no marketing.

Hollywood does not need another aging almost 56 Actor.

You keep referring to his age of 56 as if 56 is old? Judging from all of your comments, I am beginning to think you are about 12.

56 isn't old dear. I don't know how old you are but I'm 31 and my mother is 57.

Mel's a big boy. He can go hug his own cactus, take responsibility for his own conduct and his own decisions, and make his own changes. He doesn't need forgiveness. If he doesn't want to lie in the bed he's made, he needs to go make a better one, same as everybody else.

You missed the point.
12:28 PM on 10/18/2011
Well, I reread the article and I don't think I did. What do you think the point was? Maybe you missed mine?

Mel brought his troubles on himself in a great number of ways. If he wants different results, he will have to change his behavior and attitudes. It's as simple as that. Downey can't help him, and all the forgiveness in the world isn't going to heal his problems. He has to help himself.
03:20 PM on 10/17/2011
Mel needs the money. Didn't he lose his home on Mago along with his rare collection of antisemitic and misogynistic literature to a typhoon?

As for Robert (loved you in Back to School), he should ask forgiveness for Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man 2. Oofah!

Mel Gibson is worth over $600 million- so no he doesn't need the money. As for Sherlock Holmes - it grossed over $200 million. So he has nothing to apologize for.

He was semi retired from acting even before his comments. Not a lot of work to judge on how the public feels. The Beaver was a low budget nothing and would have done poorly even at the peak of his popularity.

The comments of Downey re: the industry are right on. Hangover 2-no Mel Gibson. Well, it's true he said some racist things and apparently committed misdemeanor battery by smacking his gf with an open hand in the mouth once under disputed circumstances On the other hand, the crew of the Hangover had no problem working with Mike Tyson. Besides the multiple assaults and racist comemnts he's made, besides the wife beating, there was the rape.

Thank you! A man tried for rape can be in a film but a man who ultimately wasn't charged with anything can't? Like I said in my own comment- I'm not a fan of Mel's but there is a LOT of hypocrisy flying around that situation.

And what is the debt to society for a man who said some things you don't like - not a crime last I checked?

Is this the much-ballyhooed "Tolerance Of The Left" we're constantly lectured about, where a person's less-than-ideal upbringing and significant psychiatric concerns are supposed to be mitigating factors, and in fact a reason to reach out to a person and help them along?

Well so did Mel Gibson. He drove while drunk,. Paid for that. and he pled no contest to misdemeanor battery, which he is in the middle of doing the requirements to pay that off. So in six months or so when he completes all that, he's good to go?
