California's Doctors Back Legalization Of Marijuana

California Doctors Marijuana

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- California's largest industry group for doctors is calling for the legalization of marijuana even as it maintains that the drug has few proven health benefits.

Dr. Donald Lyman, the Sacramento physician who wrote the group's new policy, said doctors are increasingly frustrated by the state's medical marijuana law, which allows use with a doctor's recommendation. Physicians are put in the uncomfortable position of having to decide whether to recommend a drug that's illegal under federal law, Lyman said.

"It is an open question whether cannabis is useful or not," he told the newspaper. "That question can only be answered once it is legalized and more research is done. Then, and only then, can we know what it is useful for."

The CMA acknowledges health risks associated with marijuana use and proposes regulation similar to alcohol and tobacco, but the group says the consequences of criminalization outweigh the dangers.

The federal government considers cannabis a drug with no medical use. The CMA wants the White House to reclassify it to help promote further research on its medical potential. Earlier this year, the Obama administration turned down a request to reclassify marijuana. That decision is being appealed in federal court by legalization advocates.

Lyman called current laws a "failed public health policy."

But critics within the medical community said association leaders did not consider the broader implications of legalizing marijuana.

"I think it's going to lead to more use, and that, to me, is a public health concern," Dr. Robert DuPont, an M.D. and professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School, told the Times.

Members of the CMA, which represents more than 35,000 California physicians, were informed of the trustees' vote Saturday. It is the first major medical association in the nation to urge legalization of cannabis, according to a group spokeswoman.

The group's decision provoked an angry response from some in law enforcement.

"Given everything that we know about the physiological impacts of marijuana – how it affects young brains, the number of accidents associated with driving under the influence – it's just an unbelievably irresponsible position," said John Lovell, spokesman for the California Police Chiefs Association.

The CMA's parent organization, the American Medical Association, has said the federal government should consider easing research restrictions, according to the Times.

I think marijuana would be used more but not to the extent as they think. Like alcohol it will be abused I am sure. Imagine all the happy people there would be. Our government is stupid really, if the citizens were all deleriously happy they would have a lot less complaints and they would be buying a ton of food which is good for the economy. It is a pretty dumb law I think, its no different than alcohol which will eat at your liver if you drink too much but that's the individual's choice how they want to handle it. I say legalize marijuana.

50% of Americans want it legalized. Obama and Holder don't. Guess which 50% want it legalized. I have heard some people who will stay home because they feel double crossed by the president and his lap dog AG.

Is Holder trying to throw the election for Obama?

DuPont, now where have I heard that name before? Isn't that the name of one of the crooked mega-corporations that helped get hemp outlawed nationwide in the 1930's so they could eliminate competition from hemp products and force everyone to buy their toxic chemicals and products instead?

I love how the article neglects to point out that the so called doctor.. Robert DuPont was the second White House Drug Czar from 1973 to 1977 under former Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He has no business commenting on legalization at all. Drug Czars are required by law to lie and do anything possible to thwart any effort to legalize Schedule I drugs such as marijuana. He has made his career off of keeping it illegal ever since. He is heavily invested in urinalysis and would lose a lot of money if marijuana was legalized.

I think that proves his position against it being legalized.
Good to know his history though.
He must be getting funding from big pharma.
You know they don't want it legalized, it could lose them billions in their "prescription" drug sales.

Rise up! Rise up! Stamp out the scourge of marijuana PROHIBITION once and for all!

The Constitutional right to freedom of religion, free speech, a free press, to keep and bear arms, to be secure in your person, house, papers and effects against unreasonable search and seizure, to life, liberty and property, to be protected from having your property taken by the government without due process of law and without just compensation, to confront the witnesses against you, to be protected from excessive bail, excessive fines, cruel and unusual punishment, to vote and others have been unjustly denied to tens of millions of Americans in the name of marijuana PROHIBITION.

No one, of any age, in all of recorded history, anywhere on planet earth has ever died from consuming marijuana... many have died from marijuana PEOHIBITION!

This is all a bunch of bull, I travel 3,000 miles and live in Cali during the cold months on east coast, Just so I could get my medical marijuana card.I have diabetes & Neurorrhaphy
real bad in my feet. I take 15 pills a day, Which each pill has 10 different side affects thats going to kill me just try to relieve pain and hope it cures a few things. In stead of taken 4 hydrocodon 650 a day for the pain, I rather stop taken them a take a toke off a joint to relieve the pain I am having. When I am in Cali I stop taken the pills and take the hits instead ! Specially at night !
Not only does it help the pain go away, It helps me sleep alot better , At least I know what the side affects from canabis is IT MAKE YOU STUPID IT MAKES YOU HUNGRY IT MAKES YOU SLEEPY At least it not going to kill my liver or kidney's. That going to kill me over the years then help me! With each pill comes 10 - 15 different side affects. If I am going to die from something , I rather die smoking canabis then taken all these pills. Not only will your City ,County, State get the TAX money ,Crime would go down .So I THANK CALIFORNIA for giving me the choice of smoking or taken a bunch of pills.

Let's just say I'll go with the medical doctors on this one. It's not like the CPCA has an incentive to keep marijuana illegal, oh wait they do.

Corporate persons do not support legalization and therefore it will never happen, no matter how many human persons support it.

That seems like a glass half empty comment, I suggest you watch this video.

It will be legalized if we fight for it. We are many, while the corporate persons are few.

Check out the Constitution, it starts with WE THE PEOPLE, not "we the corporations".

Most likely why the SCOTUS decided to make corporations people.
