SimCity Games Will Cost $9.99 In Honor Of Herman Cain's 999 Plan

First Posted: 10/17/11 04:03 PM ET Updated: 12/17/11 05:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Presidential candidate Herman Cain swears he didn't get the idea for his 999 tax plan from SimCity, but the makers of that video game are still having fun with the connection.

On Monday afternoon, Electronic Arts will be lowering the price of SimCity games on its website to $9.99 -- a $10 discount -- for a limited time.

It has also put out a video about the similarities between Cain's plan and the default tax rates in the game SimCity 4, which were first noted by The Huffington Post.

"The team behind the famous city management game are having fun with this possible connection and have created this video in good natured fun," said EA in a statement.

The video ponders the origins of Cain's plan, with cameos by video game versions of President Barack Obama, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Its final conclusion: "No, Mr. Cain. The 999 is a video game plan."

In a video aired Friday night on "The Rachel Maddow Show," a reporter asked Cain about the relationship between 999 and SimCity. "You said you had original ideas, successful people around you thinking ideas up," the reporter said while questioning Cain about the plan. "Is it an original idea or modeled after a game?"

"It's an original idea, and to people who say it's modeled after a game -- it's a lie," Cain said during a campaign stop in Tennessee. "That's all I'm going to say. It is a lie. You see, that's the difference when you become one or two in the polls. People make up stuff. That is a lie. I'm not going to take it back and not going to politically say, but unfortunately, that is not totally true. It's a lie."

That's kinda funny. Especially since SimCity is not as modifiable as Second Life. The sims failed miserably largely because you couldn't really use your imagination and build your own homes. SL offered the flexibility to build whatever your heart's desire. Some built homes they could never afford in real life, some built castles. Some of us built college campus' in order to teach in a freer, more innovative environment. This technology offered those who couldn't pursue their dreams in architecture, fashion design, performing arts and making jewelry. Stand up comedians learned to deal with their stage fright by performing through an avatar. President Obama is wanting to build up the information highway backbone to bring innovations and quality education. Telecommuting work should also be open so that moms who want to home school their kids, can still make a living. Here is one example of a consortium that has been built by mostly volunteers. http://www.vwbpe.org/

Hmmm . . . this is kind of amusing; I went to Politifact to check on something Cain said, and discovered the following . . . Out of 20 statements he made,
True - 0
Mostly True - 3
Half True - 4
Mostly False - 3
False - 8
Pants on Fire - 2

So half of his statements are outright falsehoods, less than a half of what he says is even partially true, and has yet to say anything completely true . . . http://www.politifact.com/personalities/herman-cain/ Yup, he is DEFINITELY qualified to be a GOP contender!

A sim ple plan for a sim ple man?As most middle class Americans live hand to mouth spending all they earn on goods and services to sustain themselves and compete for the same loaf of bread and box of cornflakes with the wealthy the middle class and poor would have a higher effectual (REAL) tax rate than the wealthy under Herman Cain's 999 plan. If a family earns $50,000 a yr. and spends it all to survive they are taxed at 9% on income of $50,000=$4,500 and 9% on purchases of $50,000=$4,500 ($4,500+$4,500=$9,000total tax/$50,000total income=18% tax rate .... A family that earns $250,000 and spent twice as much or $100,000 to live would be taxed 9% on income of $250,000=$22,500 and 9% on purchases of $100,000=$9,000 ($22,500+$9,000=$31,500total tax/$250,000total income=12.6% tax rate). In order for a family earning $50,000 a year to have an equivalent REAL tax rate of 12.6% they would have to spend only $1,800 a yr. on goods and services.... Or quite simply starve! A simple plan for a simpleton... The GOP is USING Herman Cain to try and force higher taxes on the middle class and poor to allow the rich to get richer still. Say no to NEO-CHRISTIAN FASCIST INDUSTRIALIZED SERFDOM UNDER LORD REPUBLICORP.

Do you really believe that people earning $50,000 would spend the entire amount just to survive? My math skills are not up to your caliber; therefore, please help me understand.

The 9% national sales tax will harm poor families unbelievably. Cain's answer? Cut your tax bill by buying used goods. How do you buy used milk?

Look for every new car to miraculously become a "slightly used" car.
Every store will become a Scratch & Dent Outlet.
Every home will be a Sale by Owner.
And that 9% sales tax component will evaporate like the morning dew.

Cain is a joke.
