Herman Cain To Meet With Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio Over Immigration

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/17/2011 1:16 pm Updated: 12/17/2011 4:12 am

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio appeared on CNN's "American Morning" Monday ahead of a press conference with Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain and the chairman of the Arizona Republican party in Phoenix. Arpaio was first asked why the GOP candidates were seeking his endorsement.

"Well, it’s not because I’m tall, dark, and handsome, which I’m not," he joked. "But I have been around twenty years, and many years as head of the Federal Drug Enforcement in Mexico, Texas, Arizona. So I think I know where the border is. That may be one reason, but I’ll meet with Mr. Cain. I met with Michele Bachmann in my office last month, and I’ll see how he stands on the illegal immigration problem," said the Arizona sheriff. Arpaio has said that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry have called him too.

The 79-year-old Arpaio, known as "America's toughest sheriff," has gained much publicity for his immigration enforcement tactics. He has undertaken raids in predominately Latino neighborhoods to sweep up undocumented immigrants. He has gained notoriety for making inmates wear pink underwear and flip-flops, creating a tent-city jail, and bringing back chain gangs. A federal grand jury has been investigating Arpaio for abuse of power allegations since early 2010, which Arpaio called "garbage" on the show. The Justice Department settled a lawsuit against Arpaio after he acquiesced to hand over documents related to a civil rights investigation.

CNN asked Arpaio about Cain's comments Saturday on the campaign trail, calling for an electrified border fence. The former Godfather's Pizza CEO said, "It's going to be 20 feet high. It’s going to have barbed wire on the top. It’s going to be electrified. And there’s going to be a sign on the other side saying, ‘It will kill you -- Warning.'" He said Sunday on "Meet The Press" that it was a "joke" and "not a serious plan."

Arpaio responded, "Oh, I’m sure he was joking, but it probably means that he’s taking it serious to do something at the border and stop the illegal immigrations." He added that he did not oppose a fence, but that he would "like to see people go to jail, not give 'em a ride back to Mexico."

Cain also spoke on immigration at a campaign stop last summer in Iowa, later calling it a joke:

I just got back from China. Ever heard of the Great Wall of China? It looks pretty sturdy. And that sucker is real high. I think we can build one if we want to! We have put a man on the moon, we can build a fence! Now, my fence might be part Great Wall and part electrical technology. ... It will be a twenty foot wall, barbed wire, electrified on the top, and on this side of the fence, I'll have that moat that President Obama talked about. And I would put those alligators in that moat!

Arpaio was asked about Cain's immigration plan, which includes promoting "a pathway to citizenship that is already there" in addition to securing the border. "Well, I’m against amnesty," he said. "We do enforce the laws in the interior, we go into private businesses and lock up those employed illegally," he said.

Maricopa County can choose to elect officials to be abusive towards them, but not here in California. Taking joy in others' misfortunes/pain is a psychological disorder known as Sadomasochism.

I'd like to hear Cain's position on the immigration problem. I don't like to hear what other people say his position is.
Cain has stated that he liked Reagan's foreign policies. Does he also embrace Reagan's immigration policies?
Cain also mentions he wants a pathway for citizenship for illegals. That sounds like reform.

I'm waiting to hear from Cain,

So he wants to jail the illegals instead of sending them back. Gee, thats kinda fishy.

You clowns say you hate the illegals cuz they come here and tax dollars are wasted on them but then you want to jail them. That costs taxpayer dollars. Sheriff Joe doesn't realize he betrays himself with his own comments.

He wants to jail them even though it will cost taxpayers dollars because it allows him to feed the prison industrial complex which is financially beneficial to him and all of law enforcement.

He also likes to brag about going into business's and arresting the illegal workers yet never does he arrest the business owners that do the hiring of illegals. Why you ask. That's because, they can then go and hire more illegals, Joe can come back again and again refilling the prison industrial complexes coffers.

Joe needs to be buried under his tent city jails cesspool after he serves a life sentence for corruption.

How do you plan to pay for this? Are you going to sell 999 pizzas? Btw, they better be at least medium sized pizzas!

By the way, if you really think immigration is a problem you don't have to go all the way to the border to stop them. Hit the demand side. Severely - I mean severely punish those who hire illegals. Take their business license away! It'll be much cheaper, more humane, and effective. I don't understand how chasing frightened people at the border or putting up 1000s of mile long fences will stem the tide.

So, all Americans will vote for Herman Cain?

Which America are you talking about? Here in the United States of America, Mr. Cain has no chance of becoming the next President.

He'll get effectively none of the Democratic vote, and the Republicans have been depending on the "bring back the Confederacy" vote for so long that they wouldn't willingly nominate someone with a decent suntan.

You folks are in quite a pickle. Neither of your two front runners is acceptable to big chunks of your "base".

You get to choose. Pick Governor Romney and lose the "he ain't Christian" voters, pick Mr. Cain and lose the "he ain't white" voters.

Either way, that's half your base gone!

So, how are you on facts? How do this year's deportation stats stack up? Actually pretty well. The numbers booted out are higher. How are the border crosser numbers? Actually lower. How are the penalties for employers hiring illegals? Actually, up. Now, what do you have to talk about next? What illegals do you have knowledge, not opinion, of?

The law states that an immigration officer can ask anyone about their immigration status. That's simple enough. Cops can talk to anyone they want.
No problem.

The law next states that the immigration official can arrest anyone they think is in the US illegally.
I have a problem with that.
What does 'Think" mean? Does the officer need evidence?
Would you apply that standard to a criminal case?.
If the cops "Think" Joe Black committed a robbery, could they arrest him or would they need clear and convincing evidence?

How can you tell if a person is illegal?

I've met people who thought they were illegal, and weren't - and vice versa, thought they were legal, and weren't. I've seen cases where ICE thought people were illegal, and were wrong; and I've seen cases where they changed their mind.

How do YOU know you're legal? Your momma told you? She lied to you about other things, didn't she?

What we need to do is work a deal with Mexico to trade anybody with a 6th grade education and no record for a whining Teabagger, one for one. Of course that assumes Mexicans are fools, which is not a good assumption.

I'll bet he hires plenty of them for minimum wage at Godfathers. In fact, I'll bet if an investigative journalist did a little scratching, they'd find out Cain hired plenty of 'illegals' in his SW pie joints, and that what he's really doing is firewalling the skeletons in his closet.

For those of you who live outside of Arizona and have your own local politics to follow what you must know is Joe Arpaio is a corrupt and incompetent sheriff. Some of you Republicans who hear about him may think he is awesome but his support among Republicans in this state has fallen off drastically as his deputies are being investigated for several illegal and unethical practices, his "raids" have done next to nothing to really stop crime, areas that are under his jurisdiction have the highest crime rates and highest rates of unsolved or uninvestigated cases, he's bullied and accused Republican judges and politicians of crimes that have been thrown out of court and when thrown out he simply, along with a former Attorney General who is also on trial for abuse of power, investigates them as well. His office has been found to have abused it's power repeatedly, the sheriff office under him has lost over $100 million in lawsuits for it's abuses, and the best you can say about him is that he was ignorant of the abuses that occurred under his watch. He is a sheriff who likes to put on shows for the media to look tough and be popular but he is nothing but a corruptindividual who has routinely abused his power and now Arizona voters are catching on and he doesn't discriminate, he has gone after Republicans in the state far more than any group of Democrats.

To xirdneh132 I live here in Arizona and you are being dishonest. Arpaio is a lawful abiding sheriff who continues to do his job in spite of the illegal alien supporters in this state. He arrests the drug dealers, rapists and murderers who sneak into our state and run back to mexico when the law gets after them. Our streets and our children are not safe the closer you get to the border. The amnesty crowd keeps trying to take our law enforcement down because they are doing their job - if they were removed, the flood gates would open and Arizona would be absolutely flooded with illegal aliens - those of us who live here depend upon law enforcement to provide at least a modicum of protection against these criminals who are sneaking into our country.
02:49 AM on 10/18/2011
Really, is that why his deputy Hendershott is under investigation, the attorney general who he worked closely with Andrew Thomas under investigation, is that why an in depth article that detailed his "raids" and incompetence was given a pulitze prize, allegations made in those articles were never denied by Arpaio, is that why he routinely has lost court cases that total up to $100 million. None of those are lies, all of them are facts. The Phoenix police department has rounded up more illegal immigrants by doing background checks on arrests they've made then Arpaio has ever done. The Goldwater Institute, one of the leading and most conservative Republican organizations in Arizona, also slammed Arpaio. It's people like you who blindly follow and enable corrupt people like Arpaio because they "look" tough on illegal immigration. I posted no lies, all of it is true and easy to verify, you just don't have the willingness to face the facts.
02:59 AM on 10/18/2011

People like you accuse people like me of being part of the amnesty crowd because you are too lazy to make a real, rational, fact based argument. I am not part of the amnesty crowd and I am also not part of the corruption crowd. If you believe Joe Arpaio is some sort of great law enforcement man then you are more blind then you really understand.
