New Yorker Occupy Wall Street Cover: What The One Percent Would Protest (PHOTO)

First Posted: 10/17/11 10:20 AM ET Updated: 10/17/11 10:20 AM ET

For those wondering if any more demonstrations will come out of the economic downfall, the New Yorker's latest cover provides an image for another group's possible argument: the so-called "one percent" that the Occupy Wall Street movement is battling.

The cover — drawn by Barry Blitt and entitled "Fighting Back" — shows a group of Wall Street fat cats protesting to maintain the status quo. "Keep Things Precisely Where They Are," one sign reads. The cover could be seen as representing what Occupy Wall Street protesters believe are the one percenters' interests and objectives: to make and maintain as much money as possible.

The image also places the Wall Street bankers squarely in the middle of two movements — the Tea Party, which calls for smaller government, and Occupy Wall Street, which wants more government regulation of banks.

www.stopoccupyingwallst.org - It is important for everyone to understand what wall street represents and that the occupy wall street protesters have no need to be there or in Manhattan at all.

Absolutely brilliant.

Democrats--those inept, half-as$ed, half-lovers of the corporate world--or at least actual progressive Dems (those few that are left) would do well to pay attention to the rhetorical strategy here. If you can accurately sum up your opponent's argument in a way that clearly illustrates how ridiculous it actually is, and/or you can pose the opposite of your own view and say "here, audience, would you advocate _this_?", it's often the clincher. This cover does it visually in a fantastically clear way.

Love that cover. It's reminiscent of some of the classic covers from decades back.

Proud American Liberal who votes!

While reading the various comments here, I noticed how so many self described conservatives use American flags in their pictures and then make nasty comments about fellow Americans. We are all Americans, liberal and conservative. Please remember that before you slam those who differ from you.
02:39 AM on 10/20/2011
What are you, nuts? A liberal being as American as a conservative? Not possible. (Not possible, even though every single actual American value that distinguished the nation from other nations in the late 1700s, and particularly from the monarchy that we broke away from, was absolutely "liberal" to the point of being radical. Which is why the nonentity known as the "tea party" today [you know there's no such thing, right?] is the _opposite_ of the real thing, the Boston Tea Partiers. But anyway.)

Actually, now that I think about it, I think I'd like to reserve the right to look at a guy advocating the near-abolition of civil rights, the return of unregulated markets, the triumph of pathological individualism, the rolling back of environmental regulations, the rolling over of Social Security and Medicare and any other revenue stream they can get their hands on into private Wall Street interests, etc., and call him "un-American." Because he is. Really.

This is funny. Watching all this fuss stirred up by the liberals and, in the end, their president trades it all in for some watered down compromise with the Republicans and Wall Street!! LMAO

You know what's really funny?

Well, maybe I should say, you know what's really sad?

When a Chinese news outlet headlines asks about the MEDIA BLACKOUT over the occupy Wall Street protests.

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/opinion/2011-09/30/content_13823311.htm

Are we so scared to scratch that scab?

Do we fear what may come out?

We as a nation lost our nation to Corporate special interests and Fascist and we may never get it back.

Sad and how low our nations media has fallen that they are now ridiculed by China, Cuba, Russia and Iran.

Too sad.

Gotta agree, here. There's anything but a media blackout about OWS.

Fox News may not be covering it as much as CNN or MSNBC, but even they're covering it. They're just trying to spin it as the big, mean middle class picking on the poor, old rich folks who never ever did anything wrong and deserves as much of our money as we can possibly give.

Although they are focussed on British politics, the cartoons in the Independent and the Guardian have been particularly well done of late. The oligarch/banker is typically represented as a big fat cat, in late Victorian/Edwardian attire, similar to the tools on this New Yorker issue. The British have a long tradition of stock characters as well as for reinventing 18th and 19th century cartoon classics. Some are incredibly well-done. HP should think about a cartoon feature.
01:33 AM on 10/20/2011
I'm a big fan of British political cartoons, old and new. They are really wonderful, as you say, with their stock characters. I was living there for several months as the Prince Charles/Camilla scandal began to heat up, and my oh my, their cartoons made our most virulent efforts look tame. How they thoroughly excoriate the subject and still stay within the bounds of good taste I don't know. Must be a Brit thing.
