Colo. House Cat Gets Close Look At Mountain Lion

10/19/11 01:37 AM ET   AP

BOULDER, Colo. -- Gail Loveman's 11-year-old cat named Zeus usually stands tall and hisses when he sees a squirrel outside his owner's home. He wasn't as much of a tough guy when the animal on the other side of the glass was a mountain lion.

Loveman says she was in her home office last Thursday when she heard a noise and turned to see the mountain lion on the porch.

Zeus entered the room and walked to the sliding glass door for a closer look while Loveman snapped photos.

Loveman went upstairs and spotted a second mountain lion. She says both jumped a fence and left.

Reminds me of a lovely story I heard on the bus a few years ago; this lady's daughter had phoned her from Ft Smith to tell her she hadn't gone to work that day 'cos there were 2 mountain lions on her porch when she went to leave. They'd been driven into town by forest fires. Apparently they stayed on that porch for quite a while before wandering off. No injuries, no damage to property, no threats to anyone.

Sometimes size has no issue to the sign of a lion at heart.... :)

When you live in the midst of the homes of wildlife this is what you should expect. That woman certainly didn't seem afraid - I suspect she respects all things wild - some of you posters must be citiots with the remarks you've been making here.

All pets should be kept inside (cats) and dogs should be kept close by at all times. People shouldn't let their dogs ride in their laps either. Imagine what would happen if you have a front end collision and the air bag goes off. The dog would be killed and the driver killed or hurt. Yet I see people driving like that all the time. Crazy!!

What fabulous photos of this event. In Colorado (where I also live) , this is a familar event where mountain lions or bears roam around houses. What scares me looking at those photos, is that those animals mountain lions and bears especially can crash through windows, especially a thin sliding glass door like that one. Here, you always have to be on alert.

Sliding glass doors are made of tempered glass and are very hard to break. A mountain lion is not strong enough unless it learns how to use a hammer.

A bear might be able to break tempered glass, they have no problem with car windows but probably wouldn't hit it that hard. For them, it's much easier to break in through a regular door.

Small mountain lion! But a funny shot!

That's because it was still a baby. Mountain lions don't usually run in packs like coyotes or wolves.

Very interesting Mrs. Loveman but, and I think I speak for the masses, we would much rather hear Zeus' comments on the encounter. If you could arrange that and record it that would be great.

Lucy's intro is a reiteration of the news article that follows... who needs Lucy? I guess when the tidbit article is too short compared to the commercial we are forced to see, you need a Lucy to pad things out ... but it only frustrates your audience.
