East Africa To Have An IMAX Theater

Kenya Gets Subsaharan Africa's Only IMAX

The IMAX Corporation is opening a digital theater in Nairobi, Kenya, with hopes for "greater opportunities in the region," they announced in a press release today. The release calls the IMAX "Central Africa's first," though Kenya is technically in East Africa. According to the IMAX site, it's also the only current theater in Sub-Saharan Africa (there's an IMAX in Cairo). As of last year, two out of four IMAX theaters remained in South Africa, but due to outdated equipment and low attendance numbers, their contract was not renewed and they shuttered. No word yet on whether this means more or fewer African-themed IMAX movies, or just that Kenyans can now enjoy vampire birth on the biggest screen ever.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story naively echoed the press release's identification of Kenya in "Central" Africa, despite the fact that it's on the Eastern coast. Duly noted!
