Occupy Wall Street: 21 Essential Twitter Follows

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/19/11 06:21 PM ET   Updated: 12/19/11 05:12 AM ET

In just one month, the Occupy Wall Street protests have grown from a few discontented citizens to a movement sweeping the globe, but its rapid pace of growth might never have been possible without a key tool for social connectivity: Twitter.

The micro-blogging social media site has been at the forefront of the movement with live tweets flying in every second, -- using the handle #occupywallstreet -- covering everything from the arrests of 700 people on the Brooklyn Bridge, to Tuesday night's arrest of feminist author Naomi Wolf.

Crucial updates have come from a variety of sources ranging from current college students to celebrities, but certain members of the twitter community have been tireless in their efforts to provide up-to-the minute tweets on the protests in Zuccotti Park and elsewhere.

Many of those who devote the greatest amount of coverage may be sympathetic to Occupy Wall Street but there are plenty willing to express their disapproval on twitter, as well.

In fact new research from NMIncite finds that 22 percent of tweets with #occupywallstreet supported the movement, while 11 percent were against it.

Whatever their bent, here are some of the most important people to follow on Twitter to stay abreast of Occupy Wall Street's latest:

21 essential twitter accounts? I follow somw of these people...I'm surprised you didn't try to get them tweeting something profound. For instance, Naomi Wolf actually saying that tpolice closed a street down, and it was terrifying. Also the police intentionally lied about where they were taking her and her friend, virtually to make her disappear. It's not suppose to be that way in the US. The tweets you showed made these people sound silly.

Wall Street and the banks caused the global collapse of the economy and the markets. Wall Street and the banks need to fix what they broke or they must be held accountable .

Wall street & banks fix the economy? u kidding me? They will when their profits go down--drastically.
**So instead of waiting I'm going to refinance my properties --take them plus checking & savings accounts out of Citibank and put it ALL in my teachers CREDIT UNION. This action could be a model for all who have accounts with the predator institutions. This also could be the pathway for elders & families to join in the OWS in a way that Wall Street would notice--$$$$ Join me in this Refi-Revolution ---A plus= Credit Unions are owned by members

Yes I agree a revolution of sorts may be the only way. It definitely feels like its imminent in whatever form. People are just fed up with being conned, and as the backbone of the country, why should we take it anymore?

At various times throughout history, violence has been the only effective solution to the problems faced by an oppressed people.

This is not one of those times.

Stay strong. Stay proud. Stay non-violent.

You mean, The only congressman that returns a portion of his budget. You mean a guy who could have made much more money in his practice but decided to fight for the people. You mean a guy who if president will reduce the salary of the President by 900%.
You mean a guy who always votes YES to term limits and pay deductions for all members of congress

Here are 2 goals for Occupy Wall Street: Make the Fed provide money to all banks and federal credit unions and not just Big Banks. Repeal Citizens United by Constitutional Amendment so that corporation cannot control our election process.
