Russ Feingold Endorses Tammy Baldwin In 2012 Senate Race

First Posted: 10/19/2011 10:15 am Updated: 12/19/2011 4:12 am

WASHINGTON -- Former senator Russ Feingold is giving a boost to Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) in her run for U.S. Senate on Wednesday, encouraging progressives to donate to her to fight back against "Karl Rove, the Koch brothers, and big corporations."

Feingold will be making his endorsement in an email to Baldwin's supporters on Wednesday. In the message, he cites her fights in Congress for the middle class and opposition to involvement in Iraq.

"I know Tammy has the values, the vision, and the guts to be a force the middle class in the U.S. Senate," he writes. "We stood together against going to war in Iraq. And nearly 10 years before the financial collapse, we fought the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act."

"These commonsense rules of the road prevented Wall Street and the big banks from making risky investments, and the end of those safeguards led to our economic crisis. Tammy has always put what is right for working Wisconsin families ahead of powerful special interests in Washington."

In a statement to The Huffington Post, Baldwin said she was "honored to have the support of Russ Feingold, a progressive champion who always puts Wisconsin's working and middle class families first."

Baldwin is the only openly gay woman in Congress. If she wins her race in 2012, she will become the first openly gay person to serve in the U.S. Senate. Her campaign has already generated significant excitement from women's groups and LGBT organizations.

Feingold's endorsement of Baldwin isn't entirely surprising, but it sends a strong signal to progressives that Wisconsin's Senate race will be one to watch -- and one that should build on a growing anti-Wall Street movement within the progressive community.

In her statement announcing her candidacy, Baldwin said she believes "Wisconsin families need a senator who will work hard to deliver results for the middle class -- a leader with the courage to do what's right, no matter how tough the odds or how powerful the special interests we have to fight."

Feingold has long been an advocate for strong Wall Street reform and cleaning up corporations -- he opposed the Dodd-Frank legislation because it didn't go far enough and called on Democrats to stop taking corporate contributions.

The only other non-incumbent endorsement Feingold has made in 2012 is his backing of Elizabeth Warren, who is running for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts. In his email endorsement of Warren, Feingold also stressed that she "stood up against the Wall Street wish list of a bankruptcy bill" and would "keep fighting for middle class families on Capitol Hill."

"Tammy is a true progressive champion, one of the strongest fighters for working families our state has ever produced and a hero to those of us who believe in breaking barriers and eliminating injustice in our society," adds Feingold, who also asks supporters to contribute to the Baldwin campaign. "I was proud to call her a colleague as we fought together in Washington for Wisconsin families -- and I’ll be proud to call her my Senator."

In August, Feingold announced that he would not be seeking elected office in 2012, clearing the field for Baldwin to become the frontrunner in the Senate race. Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) is retiring, creating an open seat.

The GOP field is more crowded, with former governor Tommy Thompson, Wisconsin state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and former congressman Mark Neumann all running. Several others are rumored to possibly jump in.

Feingold is now running Progressives United, an organization aimed at mitigating the effects of -- and eventually overturning -- the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. It has launched advocacy campaigns calling out corporate corruption and has given money to progressive candidates.

SUBJ: In Tammy's corner
SENDER: Russ Feingold

Dear Friend,

Today, I’m proud to stand with a candidate who will keep the fight for progress, the middle class, and equality alive in the U.S. Senate: our good friend, Tammy Baldwin.

But with Karl Rove, the Koch brothers, and big corporations already on the attack, we’ll need to fight back now --Tammy needs all of us in her corner.

Join me in supporting Tammy by making a contribution today to help her build her grassroots campaign!

I know Tammy has the values, the vision, and the guts to be a force for the middle class in the U.S. Senate. We stood together against going to war in Iraq. And nearly 10 years before the financial collapse, we fought the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act.

These commonsense rules of the road prevented Wall Street and the big banks from making risky investments, and the end of those safeguards led to our economic crisis. Tammy has always put what is right for working Wisconsin families ahead of powerful special interests in Washington.

And we know those same powerful special interests will spend a lot of money to keep Tammy out of the United States Senate.

So please join me in standing with Tammy by sending a contribution right now!

Tammy is a true progressive champion, one of the strongest fighters for working families our state has ever produced and a hero to those of us who believe in breaking barriers and eliminating injustice in our society. I was proud to call her a colleague as we fought together in Washington for Wisconsin families -- and I’ll be proud to call her my Senator.

Thanks for helping us fight to keep moving Wisconsin forward.

All the best,

Russ

Correction: This post previously referred to Tommy Thompson as a former senator instead of a former governor.

I'm always amazed to think Wisconsin voters allowed Feingold to lose the 2010 election. You cannot get a stronger, more ethical, hard working senator than he. Someone clearly on the side of the middle class, workers and families. They voted instead for Ron Johnson, an apologist for corporations, anti labor, anti family, anti woman conservative who thinks its a good idea to drill for oil in the Great Lakes. What were they thinking?

With Baldwin as candidate, I am sure the Senate will continue to be controlled by democrats. There is no chance for Republicans to be elected as senators or in political positions Wisconsin in near future. Republicans should blame Scott Walker for alienating Wisconsin people. Walker has been abusing workers in public and private sectors - stripping them with rights gained through labor unions. In fact Wisconsinites want to short-circuit Walker as governor by recalling him early next year. Paul Ryan is also in hot seat. Ryan has angered seniors - stripping them of their Medicare with his stupid Voucher-Care. If Ryan is due to re-election next year, he better be looking for a job now. Maybe Ryan and Walker can be roommates next year. They are done as politicians. Let's rally behind Baldwin next year.

Forget about labels. He is pro worker, middle class. Unless you belong to the 1% you'd be incredibly stupid to vote for someone like Ron Johnson. Now that the lazy Wisconsin electorate that didn't vote in 2010 sees what the mess they got for leadership, and as they struggle to recall Walker, they are missing Feingold and I bet an endorsement from him is a positive.

When Tammy Baldwin was in Congress, she responded to her constituents better than anyone previously. My relatives sing her peaises regularly, and back her in this race. Wisconsin needs to remember Bob Lafollette and the progressive history of the state. The current R's up there are throwbacks to McCarthy.

An endorsement is all well and good -- especially from someone like Feingold -- but what the Dems need is voter turnout.

Unless they work on that strategy, all the endorsements in the world are not going to get the results they're looking for.

Money never beats a candidate. But low turnout is deadly. And that's what happened to Russ.

Feingold is again telling the Wisconsin people how to think, what to support, and who to vote for. He just keeps forgetting what they told him last Nov.

An endorsement is telling people how to think?

So when someone tells you they like a particular show or a particular food -- you take that as telling you how to think?

You must have a very timid group of friends -- or a secretive one.

I recommend you buy a dictionary and look up the definition of the word endorsement. That would prevent you from making uninformed comments like that.

Who are either of these people and why do they merit a headline in HP's political column? Check out Ron Paul's Black This Out Money Bomb! Media trumpets that Herman Cain raised 2.8 million last quarter, the Ron Paul Black This Out Money Bomb has raised 2.4 million in a couple of days! Ron Paul in 2012!

Russ Feingold is a former Democratic senator from Wisconsin. Tammy Baldwin is currently a Democratic Congresswoman from Wisconsin. Feingold is endorsing Baldwin. That is what this article is about. You apparently know how to read, but you are trying to disprove that by your comment on this article. You should at least skim the article before commenting on it. Your comment does make a bit more sense than saying that you think that St. Louis will win the World Series, because you, at least, stayed with politics.

Hopefully, Scott Walker will be recalled in the near future. But if he isn't, then hopefully we'll see Russ take the governorship from him in 2014. Feingold is one of the good ones.

It already has. Happened 10 years ago. Proof is 1 supreme court vote determined 2000 election. We have no voice unless all 99% of us stand together and shout out loud!

yes the supremes have the real power now with all the gridlock on congress. The presidency has been reduced to cheerleader. Congress knows this too.

If he couldn't win his state then what makes you think he'd win nationally? I like him a lot, even donated to him through ActBlue but I'm wondering if he hasn't found he's more effective in a behind the scenes role?

2010 was a crazy election. He was destroyed by the very thing he fought against...money in politics. I mean, the whole 2010 election was flooded with Republican money.

The republican party pounded him with negative ads in 2010 and turned his own supporters against him with lies. Why would he want to run for president and have that stuff flying around on every channel in every state. I think that is why a lot of good people will not ever run for president. It takes more guts than people realize to put yourself and your family through that.
