Chris Matthews had some charged words to share about Newt Gingrich on his show "Hardball with Chris Matthews" Wednesday night after he played a clip of Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich sparring during Tuesday night's debate. The two Republican nominees argued over the genesis of Romney's idea for an individual mandate placed on health care.
Romney told Gingrich that his team "got the idea of an individual mandate from you." Gingrich argued this point and told Romney he got the idea from the Heritage Foundation.
This exchange riled up Matthews. "You know, the demonic aspect of the person of Newt Gingrich, and I do mean that. He speaks with a forked tongue where you see both forks at the same time," he said following the clip.
Matthews further pointed out why he felt that way about Gingrich and added, "He said two opposite things. I agree with Heritage, I did not agree with Heritage. I forget the other. That was the wrong order. First he said he was not part of it and then he said he agreed with Heritage, having just denied it."
Matthews has referred to what he calls Gingrich's "demonic aspect" before. When Bill Maher visited Matthews' show in May 2011 shortly after Gingrich kicked off his campaign for the presidency, Matthews said he looked "like the devil." Matthews has also expanded his metaphorical references and said Gingrich looked "like a car bomber."
