Muammar Gaddafi Dead Photos: Libyan Dictator Killed, Images Confirm (GRAPHIC)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/20/11 06:16 PM ET Updated: 12/20/11 05:12 AM ET

Despite initial conflicting reports about the death of Libyan Colonel Moammar Gaddafi, it has been confirmed that the dictator has been killed by Libyan rebels.

A number of photos and videos depicting Gaddafi both before and after his death have made their way onto the Internet. Getty has obtained a set of photos confirming the death, available below.

WARNING: The photos below are graphic.

Gaddafi was captured and eventually killed in the northern Libyan city of Sirte. His son Mutassim was also killed when the rebels captured the city, Reuters reports.

According to the Associated Press:

Arab broadcasters showed graphic images of the balding, goateed Gadhafi – wounded, with a bloodied face and shirt – but alive. Later video showed fighters rolling Gadhafi's lifeless body over on the pavement, stripped to the waist and a pool of blood under his head.

While he was still alive, the fighters drove him around lying on the hood of a truck, perhaps to parade him in public. One fighter held him down, pressing on his thigh with a pair of shoes in a show of contempt.

Following the demise of one of the world's most notorious dictators, attention will turn to Libya's new government.

Now that Gaddafi's dead the important thing is for the people of Libya to work for peace. To educate their people and become a free country. To many times people overthrow a dictator just to have another take over. So please Libya, continue to make the world proud by becoming a better nation. Teach your children to respect others but still be strong, to understand that others have different beliefs, that women have the same rights as men. This should not be a revolution for just the men of your country but for every one. We are all happy that Gaddafi is gone, now comes perhaps the most difficult part, to rebuild your country in a way that brings freedom, happiness, education to all. Good luck, the world wishes you well.

Sorry - no sympathy at all for a murderous dictator who killed thousand of people. He all but demanded vengeance be visited upon him - & these types show remarkable abilities to survive and inflict more death later - he showed no qtr & received none. So be it.

When this phrase was made famous, it was at a low-point in American history, but now, it's rather appropriate in the broader spectrum of world history, "Sic semper tryrannis!"

without being for or against...that's what I call vigilante justice. Rare these days. It's far from prolonged court sessions in the Hague or fancy residences in Sharm...and away from the intricacies of the law that are so ubiquitously used to obstruct justice seldom used to uphold it.

Scary group of people. Makes me wonder what type government will take over Libyan now. Doubt it will be any better from the looks of what mobs do there.

Why does Gaddafi appear to have a fullbeard in the last 2 pictures and just a scraggy goatee in the first couple???
03:11 AM on 10/25/2011
Because that wasn't him....that was his son....It says it right under the picture...hope this helps.

Because Bin Laden was assassinated by the military. Qaddafi was captured by Libyan rebels and tortured before he was killed. Qaddafi's capture was much more personal to these people. I imagine that the operation to kill Bin Laden was business as usual for the elite American soldiers involved in the operation. And I imagine they were not hovering around the dead corpse taking pictures with their cell phones. A much classier even I must say.

THE U.S. IS COMPLAINING HOW GADDAFI DIED , BUT SEAL TEAM HAD ORDER TO KILL BIN LADEN. WHAT IS THE DIFF ?? BIN LADEN WAS NOT ARMED , HE WAS KILLED WITH NO WEAPONS. THAT IS MURDER. SO CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT IS THE U.S. COMPLAINING ABOUT ? WE DID THE SAME THING TO BIN LADEN THAT THE REBELS DID TO GADDAFI ..

Amazing how many people think that was so barbaric. It is of course, but what do you think has been going on in that entire part of the part of the world for thousands of years. Its how they've always lived.Blood & guts is nothing new to them.

As if this country is any less barbaric. We just don't put ours on display. Remember this country was founded on the slaughter of native Americans and the enslavement of Blacks. They were not treated any better.

If you think that barbarity happens only in that region of the world, then you are indeed naive. No different than the Spanish in Central America, U.S. towards Native Americans, "the killing fields" in Asia, the Inquisition and Nazis in Europe.... Need I go on?

This is why Bush was a fool to go into Iraq and try and nation build. The Middle East looks at life much differently than most people. Life does not carry as much weight in the Middle East as it does in America or other civilized countries. They also use this idea against us in times of war. You can't expect rebels to bring in Gaddafi peacefully when he may have brutally killed one of their relatives. Just as you can't expect them to turn to democracy overnight. What ever government they establish, I just hope it's a peaceful one that they can all live under and it would be in our best interest to stay out of the way.

I don't like what is happening in the video, but I understand it. There are mass graves throughout Libya at the command of this man. He has always been a terrorist. He died the way that he lived. They hated him.

Yes,war is ugly. And horrible beyond belief. But its the nature of the beast. After 42 years of being brutalized by that tyrant. And being told he'll kill you like a bunch of rats. We can't expect them to give him much more humane treatment than he was given. You must do unto your enemy, before he does unto you.

It had nothing to do with our tender sensibilities. Gaddafi's pictures can be shown because we're not the ones that killed him, so these pictures don't make people want to rise up in anger against the US.
