Vera Wang Soap Opera Controversy: 'General Hospital' Star's Tweets

First Posted: 10/20/11 07:49 PM ET   Updated: 12/20/11 05:12 AM ET

Actress Nancy Lee Grahn, who plays Alexis Davis on the the daytime drama "General Hospital," has been making waves in the Twitterverse this week over an alleged controversy between her show's costume department and famed bridal designer Vera Wang.

According to Grahn's tweets, "General Hospital" costume designer Mary Ianelli visited Vera Wang's Melrose Place boutique to purchase some gowns for the TV show earlier this week but was shunned from the shop. Ianelli said in an email that the shop rejected her request to buy dresses, saying the GH audience was not their "targeted market."

Grahn took to Twitter to blast the designer on Tuesday, comparing Wang to Marie Antoinette and even telling her to "suck it."

A representative for Vera Wang told Styleite that no one from "General Hospital" has contacted the fashion house, and that they would "love the exposure" of being featured on a widely-viewed daytime show.

Grahn said that she'll respond to the controversy further in a blog post, but so far she's still tweeting her visceral reactions.

Click through the flood of uncouth tweets below to read what Grahn has said so far.

How silly of Wang's employee. Many women are avid viewers of GH. With a fashion magazine as part of the show's storyline, having one of Wang's gowns would cause many women to rush out to buy one of her gowns. I can easily hear Kate telling Maxie to set up a photo shoot with Wang's creations. I've been watching GH from the start when it was in black & white with my mother, great grandmother and twin sister and have continued to watch it through the years. Today I watch it eveyday with my friend/neighbor. Recently we've gotten her brother-in-law hooked, lol. If for some reason we can't watch it, we tape it to watch later.

Totally not the point, but was anyone else disappointed to see Nancy misspell "definitely?"

Anyway, if there's a battle to be had, it loses all kinds of cred by playing out via Twitter. Why not get the facts together, push the issue, drum up some real press, and see about having a face-to-face with Wang to get it all straightened out? I've enjoyed the heck out of NLG's work since "Santa Barbara," and I appreciate her activism for womens rights, but based on what's presented here, it seems like this latest beef is being approached pretty immaturely.

Vanessa Marcil Gionvinazzo has also tweeted AGAINST Vera Wang. Sick to death of 1%'s like Wang. I will NEVER buy another Wang item again.

Nancy, this is not the way to make friends and influence people. This is the way to get into the tabloids. Don't burn your bridges.

Vera Lang created a line for Kohls and was on Oprah to plug it last spring. Same audience, I think an employee overstepped.

Hahahahaha I love Nancy, whether she's right or not she's hysterical. I bet you the Head of the Costume Dept. is one of her BFF's too. Don't mess with Nancy, she plays a lawyer on TV!

I'm going to believe the shop over some drama queen. There's a few reasons why I stopped watching GH in the late '90s.

" . . . . but was shunned from the shop." Shunned FROM??? Darn it - has English changed itself all around again while I wasn't looking?

There's no point in poor people in boycotting her line. But at least everyone knows what they're standing for when they wear this brand in their own celebrity weddings and have it mentioned in People Magazine.

They're standing for class snobbery. So if you want to advertise that you're a snob who looks down on people who aren't rich, then by all means, wear Vera Wang.

How does Vera Wang know who's watching General Hospital? She could be stepping on the wrong toes. What a dope.

This wasn't about Vera Wang refusing to lend a dress to General Hospital. This was about General Hospital's wardrobe person trying to buy a Vera Wang gown from their LA store, being told by the studio rep that they would not SELL her a gown because Daytime was not its target market. This was never about asking for a "freebie," being angry, and grousing about it. It was also not about a dress for Grahn. This was about General Hospital being denied the right to even purchase a Vera Wang dress from its "high end" line and being told to go to the "low end" since that was presumably more in line with the daytime audience. And it is that to which Grahn took offense. In addition, Vanessa Marcil tweeted the same experience and reinforced the story. General Hospital's wardrobe person also reitterated that is exactly what happened in her comment to a style blog. Last night, Nancy Lee Grahn explained the whole situation rather well here: http://www.twitlonger.com/show/do459o

If you don't then why are you taking up space here?

Are you here to defend the 1% Wang serves from the 99% she hates and won't sell to?

I'll say it, me! Since I was 10...why, because I saw a girl who use to be on VR Troopers (Sarah Brown as the best and original Carly Corinthos). Sad reason to get hooked into daytime soaps, of course. However, we all have our guilty pleasures. Now that I'm an adult working all the time, whenever I get a day off I tune in and catch up. I'm sure you have a guilty pleasure too, so try not to judge.
