Greenest Tech Companies List Released (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 10/21/11 01:13 PM ET   Updated: 10/21/11 05:53 PM ET

Newsweek has compiled a list of the world's 30 greenest tech companies as part of its 2011 Green Rankings. Some of them you may recognize from the list of the overall 15 greenest U.S. companies.

For this list, Newsweek pulled all of the tech companies, including both hardware and software makers, from its 2011 greenest companies in the world list.

The magazine partnered with two research firms, Trucost and Sustainalytics, and developed the methodology "in consultation with an advisory panel of corporate sustainability experts."

An unrelated recent study, entitled "Analysis of Small Business Innovation in Green Technologies," by the U.S. Small Business Administration found that small business leads the way in "green technology innovation" in America. According to a press release, small business only accounts for eight percent of U.S. patents, yet they account for 14 percent of green tech patents.

More information about Newsweek's 2011 Green Rankings methodology can be found here.

The title "green" doesn't actually mean anything, so bestowing it on one company or the other is pure opinion.

I have heard of these companies. I believe 1 has alread is bankrupt but I just heard about Fiskers and they received over $500 million also from the fed govt. but the vehicles will be made in Finland?? What is that about?
09:17 AM on 10/24/2011
Yeah, the vehicle will be made in Finland and cost $90k. They will manufacture a "smaller" vehicle in the US which will sell for $57k. Gee, I wonder who's going to be able to afford these cars? Pathetic!

Then there's the Tennessee electric truck stop - you can read about it here.....
http://www.tennessean.com/article/20111003/NEWS0201/310020028/E-Tenn-truck-stop-got-stimulus-money-despite-bankruptcy

And you don't want to forget about a little "crony capitalism" in the millions of $$$ granted to this company.....

And the hits just keep on comin'. Wonder what's next?

Green is an advertizing word like "Lite" is to the food industry.

After I retired, I was offered several jobs selling the word "Green."

Might we think about ExxonMobil? They have complied with the Kyoto Protocol.
They now produce the same amount of electricity from previously wasted heat equaling 3000 1.5MW wind generators. They have given up 90% of their oil leases. They sold as many refineries as the government allowed and sold all of their gas stations. They have concentrated on natural gas, which though it is not an answer, it is an interim solution better than coal or oil.
Back in the 80s, Exxon stated that there is a rise in global temperatures and if AGW is true, technology and energy efficiency is the answer. ExxonMobil has spent 30 years becoming energy efficient and lowering their carbon footprint. It would be great if the average American thought a little about energy efficiency. Jimmy Carter suggested this in the 1970s. We laughed him out of office.

"Green is an advertizin g word like "Lite" is to the food industry."

as are such terms, in the fossil fuel industry, as "clean burning coal".
There no such thing, it's still dirty, just a bit less. It's a public relations term.

The whole fossil fuel industry is dirty, oil included. Oil company's reduction in, alternatives fossil fuels (i.e. nat gas), is only an intentionally slow transitional attempt toward non-contaminating/reusable energy sources, for financial reasons. The oil extracting, refining and distribution infrastructure developed over the last 70 years would be costly for the oil industry to abandon on short notice. But it will be much costlier to our environment/us if they don't. They have the funds to do it, and gov. support if they'd cease lobbying to eliminate the EPA, and not be so concerned about short term gains for their shareholders.

If they invest in the near future, green energy solutions, they're shareholders will thank them, sooner than we think.

This is great information for the consumer! Electronic waste is the world's fastest growing waste stream! We should all know which tech companies are doing their best to curb contributions to this waste stream! www.ecycleenvironmental.com

companies grounded in heavy metals and toxic solvents are green? I do like most of these companies products, but a gasoline burning car that gets over 35mpg is not green.

it becomes a relative term when you compare them to themselves.
