Penguins Get Sweaters To Protect Them From New Zealand Oil Spill (VIDEO)

How can you save a penguin from an oil spill? Knit him a sweater!

Last week, a New Zealand yarn store put out a request for knitters of the world to unite and put together "penguin jumpers" for the birds affected by the ongoing oil spill in Northern New Zealand, according to ABC News. Skeinz, in Napier, was soon flooded with little sweaters.

The sweaters serve a dual purpose of keeping the penguins warm until rescuers clean them and preventing the birds from cleaning themselves while they are coated with poisonous oil, reports MSNBC.

According to the Associated Press, the oil spill, which began after a cargo ship ran aground on October 5, has already left 1,300 birds dead and already cost New Zealand $3.2 million for cleanup.

New Zealand's 3 News reports that the Wildlife Centre in Tauranga, near the site of the oil spill, has received dozens of penguin sweaters and is no longer asking for any more.

The penguines are cute (as penguins are wont), but the humans are still big dummies.

Absolutely adorable. I love it when humans take care of animals. It says a lot about those people. I want one.

Are these the same creatures that will happily swim for hours in ice cold water?
06:28 PM on 10/21/2011
the oil in the water takes the waterproofing off the penguins' feathers, and that's why they can get cold and die. also, these penguins aren't from the antarctic, they swim in normal temperature sea water.

when the penguins have had to be washed of the crude oil their natural oils are stripped. Those oils are required to repel water and keep the feathers next to the skin dry, hence keeping them warm. So until these birds can get their natural oils back they will need the sweaters. Also, it keeps them from preening feathers that still have crude oil on them.

Unfortunately the sweaters won't be used after all.

It was worth a try though.

The article was referencing a different spill, the Rena disaster, where the wildlife experts there disagreed with using the sweaters, preferring a heating room instead. Other efforts have and will continue to use them as it also helps keep them from ingesting any left over oil, according to the article.
