The Horizon Pullmantur: A Huffington Post Travel Cruise Ship Guide

Posted: Updated:

The Pullmantur's Horizon is a popular floating resort. The waters are crowded with sea-worthy vessels, so to make planning easier, we've done all the prep work for a cruise vacation. As part of a Huffington Post Travel series on cruise ships, here is a tip sheet offering all the key information one could ever need to know about the Horizon.

The Horizon previously sailed as the Island Star until it was sold to the Spanish cruise line, Pullmantur. Horizon now sails to the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal and crosses the Atlantic. The ship then cruises the Mediterranean, visiting Turkey, Italy and Greece.

Passenger Ship

The Horizon is a casual cruise ship designed for Spanish-speaking travelers. Many of the passengers are older. The ship draws passengers from Spain, Mexico and Central and South America.

Special Features

The Horizon has a pool, whirlpool, fitness room and sauna. The casino lets passengers try their luck at blackjack and poker. The Spa del Mar treats passengers to relaxing massages and facials, as well as haircuts and shaves.

There are 15 different cabin classes on the Horizon, so there is something for every budget. Most of the staterooms can sleep one to four passengers. All cabins feature modern styling with clean lines, bright colors and white highlights.

The Mediterranean cruise to Turkey starts at $1,573 per person for an inside cabin on the Horizon. A seven-night cruise from Cozumel, Mexico, starts at $569 per person.

One passenger recommended the Valencia tour. The tour guide knew the area well and gave the passenger plenty of time to explore each site. The only drawback was the long line of people waiting for the tour.

Dining Experience

Restaurante La Condesa is the Horizon's main restaurant. It offers two assigned seating times every evening. Keeping with Spainish tradition, the early seating is at 8 p.m. In addition, the ship has two buffet restaurants, Panorama and the Buffet Grill.

Maiden Voyage

The Horizon made its maiden voyage in 1990. The Star Island was sold to Pullmantur in 2009 and renamed the Horizon. The ship was remodeled after the sale.

In The News

Our research revealed no notable news stories or safety concerns regarding the Island Star.
