Bobby Jindal Re-elected: Republican Easily Wins Second Term As Louisiana Governor

Bobby Jindal Reelected

MELINDA DESLATTE   10/23/11 12:43 AM ET   AP

BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal on Saturday easily coasted to a second term, winning in a landslide election after failing to attract any well-known or deep-pocketed opposition.

The 40-year-old Republican overwhelmed nine competitors in the open primary, where a candidate wins the race outright if he or she receives more than 50 percent of the vote. With four-fifths of precincts reporting, Jindal had received about two-thirds of the total vote.

His closest competitor, Tara Hollis, a Democrat from north Louisiana, garnered about one-fifth of the total vote. All of the other candidates were in single digits.

"I will use every day, every hour of these next four years to make Louisiana the very best that we can be. I don't believe in resting on our past accomplishments. I don't believe in taking time off," Jindal told a packed hotel ballroom of supporters in Baton Rouge.

Jindal piled up $15 million in campaign cash from around the nation and attracted no Democratic challengers with statewide name recognition or fundraising heft. He's had consistently high approval ratings since taking office in 2008.

His win comes amid the virtual collapse of the Democratic Party's clout in the state. In the current term, Republicans have gained control of all seven statewide elected posts and both chambers of the legislature. Hollis was an outsider to the political establishment and was unable to drum up the cash needed to challenge Jindal or mount a big-ticket advertising competition.

The first Indian-American governor in the United States, Jindal is considered by some a possible presidential contender in the future. He recently published a book and regularly appears on national news shows, but he ruled out a 2012 run.

Still, his brand of conservatism and refusal to raise taxes has resonated outside the state. His new term begins in January.

The race that received more attention in Louisiana was the one for lieutenant governor, because the officeholder is next in line should Jindal step down because of his national political ambitions.

Incumbent Jay Dardenne, who took office after a special election last year, was facing off against Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser. Like Jindal, Nungesser was a vocal critic of the federal response to the massive Gulf oil spill.

Thanks TGOPers!

"Paulson, frankly, is the most incompetent, reckless Secretary of the Treasury we've had in modern history if ever. And he had no schooling in public policy and he had no schooling in the longer term issues of fiscal management or even what sound money is all about, for crying out loud.

This victory says alot about what will be happening in 2012. Obama does not appear to be in good shape when a Repub Gov in LA wins by a landslide. More important, lib voters didn't bother going to the polls out of disgust with the Dem party and thug in the White House.

This is an interesting article, but where is the validation from multiple sources? Aljazeera is not an unbiased source. Frankly, I believe 60% of the LA voters are right!

Bobby Jindal is the Face of the American dream. Anyone who claims the Republican party has racsism in its ranks or has bad policies just has to eat their words when you have a star like him. My dream team would be Jindal/ Rubio .Now herman Cain another great American. Libs can spew all the mistruths and lies they want the proof is in the pudding.

Just because one person isn't racist, doesn't mean others aren't. Or are you going to deny the term used by the Republican Congressman Doug Lamborn is racist?

http://whitehouse.blogs.cnn.com/2011/08/01/congressman-calls-obama-a-tar-baby/

And sure, bring out Jindal/Rubio/whoever, and they'll quickly rise, then crash and burn like Trump / Gingrich / Bachmann / Perry / Cain.

Enjoy yourselves Louisiana. By the way, how's New Orleans comming along? O, and that oil from the Gulf?

So Jindal basically wins by default. Where were the dems in not finding some "deep-pocketed support" for an opposition fight. We need to see the opportunities and take them before people like Jandal skitter out for a second shot at the national spotlight, or before the Republican governor's coalition gets so strong it can dismantle the union for all practical purposes.

only 600,000 voters out of 2.8 million voters going to the polls this election ought to tell you something.

Mr. Jindal fits the people of Louisana, but what will he do? If he continues to do nothing, the people will suffer and nothing that is needed in this State will get done. He used to be someone, but now is a shadow.
10:01 AM on 10/24/2011
Are ypu on glue? jindal has been a very good governer and very committed to helping bring the money to the gulf. All you libs do is spew lies and expect it to stick. Say it long enough and maybe it will become urban legend.

get back to us when the one billion dollar blanco surplus wasn't turned into a deficit by jindal.........oh that's right, time machines don't exist.

Louisiana has a problem with elected officials Huey Long, David Duke, Jimmie Davis, Ray Nagin and now Jindahl. Soon outhouses will be back in style.

...he dances like a STAR to every tune his coporate masters play for him! I was born and raised in Louisiana. I joined the Army and left Louisiana in 1987 after graduating High School. Louisiana was a crap-py State then, and with the exception of a few newly tarred roads, nothing has changed for the better in that State. Louisiana is still divided amongst party and racial lines, it still has a terrible public school system, and no Louisiana politician really cares about the people there, because if they did they would stop allowing big oil companies to come there unregulated as they destroy the Mississippi River and its life giving and life sustaining resources! If New Orleans is operating at pre-Katrina capacity over the next four years under Jindal I would be surprised.

I can't believe people are still voting republican. Bobby Jindal's re-election prove that people dont understand what is coming when you vote republican. They will get what they voted for and believe me a republican win means going backward (1800) Look what they are doing, suppressing your vote, redistricting electoral vote, defunding planned parenthood, defunding education..... The futur will be gone as well as the middle class. We will be like a third country with an oligarchie controling the whole country. No more democratie...... It is SCARY !!!

It is the South. They believe Rush Limbaugh and the rest of the Party of No and don't seem to think very often, but the Democrats didn't think either so it's a wash.
