Coldplay Rocks New York With 'Today Show' Performance (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 10/22/11 12:31 PM ET Updated: 12/22/11 05:12 AM ET

Many rockers aren't used to getting up at the crack of dawn, but Coldplay rocked 30 Rock Friday morning when they performed on NBC's "Today Show."

The Brits, fronted by Gwyneth Paltrow's husband Chris Martin, serenaded the crowd with a few hits from their upcoming album Mylo Xyloto, including "Paradise," Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" and "Charlie Brown," as well as a few past favorites like "Fix You."

Martin and the band have recently been making the press rounds, including a segment on "CBS Sunday Morning" last weekend where Martin opened up about his marriage to Paltrow.

The band also released a new music video for their single, "Paradise."

Mylo Xyloto drops October 24.

Check out some photos from their performance below and head over to NBC for more videos from Coldplay's performance.

"Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" is an "old favorite?"

That's what that Hollyscoop video narrator calls it, an "old favorite."

"Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" was released in June 2011.

I'm just sayin'......

Of course Coldplay is performing at the crack of dawn. If they play any later in the day, their fans fall asleep almost immediately.

Coldplay just played in Rock in Rio(Brazil), last month...just so you know, almost 200 THOUSAND people waited until 2 in the morning to see them! Maroon5 was another great band that took the stage at 1am! Rock in Rio started at 6 pm! Coldplay is the best band right now; they sold over 50 million records!

I like Coldplay quite a bit. I like Chris Martin. I like Gwyneth Paltrow.

However, this doesn't mean "you" have to like them either. Or that I have to justify why I do.

Walking in the world, I get the sense we all see what we want to see. We embrace what we've enjoyed touching. And then some of us cling to these things with the need to make them more right than those things other people clutch.

As with most popular things, I usually do not take to the "hip thing/product/band" of the day and so I spent the last few years shrugging off Coldplay.

However, after seeing a few interviews of Chris Martin I started to listen to the band's music and I must admit I quite like it (I still have not yielded to the I-everything though Ha!).

But seriously, to people who think Chris Martin is a pompous a$$...give him a little slack. He is British. Their sense of humour is quite different from the American one...

I haven't seen the word "hip" attached to the band Coldplay in a very, very long time.

Chris Martin and Paltrow are the most egocentric, pretentious, conceited people on Earth.

Judgemental much?

Perhaps.

But he's still a talented musician, and she's still a talented actress.

I'd like to be first in line to ask Anonymous to hack and destroy her Goop website... but she's still a talented actress.

I bet he's sick (and his bandmates even sicker) of "Gwyneth Paltrow's husband being the prelude to every mention of their group. As if she's ever produced anything close to being as memorable as their work.

I got into Coldplay's music a couple of weeks ago after I saw their video for their old song "Clocks" on VH1. I have that song and seven others on my MP3 player now. Their best stuff has to be their slower paced songs like "Clocks". A good fast paced song like "White Shadows" is good too, though. Honestly, I think people who hate and bash musicians only listen to the songs that they hear about a lot on tv and the radio and elsewhere. Maybe if you took the time to look up different albums and listen to the songs that aren't released on the radio or as a music video, you might have a different perspective.

Bingo. Coldplay is a great band and love their deeper cuts.

I kinda agree... and I'm a Colplay fan! LOL I also don't like it when a good song is played to death on the air... *sigh* oh well...

One of the most over-rated groups. Its music is derivative and its melodies unmemorable. The lead singer, I hear, is married to a fading Hollywood star.

"OOOOOOOO. That sounds like the response of someone who was
slapped with a left hand by a right-handed man."

And yet, it sounds like EVERY response you make, sounds like you just got the sh -t knocked out of you.

""Do you even know what Stilyagi refers to?""

"A stupid russian movie?? No one cares really."

I didn't asked if you or anyone else cared, I asked if you knew. So you Googled it and best you came up with, is the name of a movie. Well NO, it is NOT simply the name of a movie. This proves what I again suspected of you being an id-i 0t. You made the senseless point that my screen name shows a "crappy aesthetic", and yet you just proved you don't even know what it really refers to. You sound like you don't know what "aesthetic" refers to either. I love it when f0olz like you try to pretend you're smart.

"yours conveys everything anyone needs to know about you"

"Yes. Which makes it & me cooler than you "

No, wrong again, Simple Simon. Calling yourself eff-in disgusted and coming across as an uneducated 7 year old actually doesn't make you look cool. And for those who know what Stilyagi refers to, it's a MUCH cooler name than your poor choice of moniker.

"FACE.”

Really? I thought that was your a $$. Put a bag over it then, the next time you come around here.

Ya think? I think they're charming. I've heard other people say this as well, and am interested to hear more: some of the songwriting is a little sentimental, but I kind of like that.

I have one lasting memory that dominates my image of Coldplay. It's when I saw Chris Martin interviewed years back and when asked about the meaning of his lyrics he said; 'I have no idea what it means.' He actually meant it.

That makes me laugh at that group.

Most talented and creative people make the same claim...poetic license--the artist realizes that the observer is left to interpret their art in their own unique way, etc.

Truth be told.... most authors have a sense of what it is they're trying to convey, which is often referred to as authorial intention... but most would label it an intentional fallacy as the author is nothing more than just another critic of his own work. Reader response theory is what you're reaching for... something far more interesting in this case. But when an artist has no sense of what his work is trying to communicate... well, that sounds like Lennon commenting on the gibberish of "I am the Walrus," another story altogether...
