'Heroin For Sale' Fliers Lead To Drug Bust

First Posted: 10/22/11 10:21 AM ET Updated: 12/22/11 05:12 AM ET

Neighbors in Portland got so sick of a house they suspected was an outpost for drug activity, that they took matters into their own hands.

KPTV reports that concerned residents started handing out "heroin for sale" fliers with the house's address. One of the fliers was sent to police and it piqued their interest.

Why didn't they just call the police themselves rather than make the flyers?

Seems like the neighbors should have just called the cops. If they had been wrong about the drugs, couldn't that qualify as defamation of character? Plus, if it was in fact a drug dealer's house (which it was), they would likely have weapons (which they did), and they could seek revenge on the person who made the fliers.

I guess it's possible that they did contact the police first and were ignored. I've been in the situation before where you really feel like someone has to get killed before the police will listen to you.

While I support methadone clinics, after all the only let you take the medicine in view of a staff member and dont send you home with it, and i support people who want to get off drugs, I also feel for the person who made the fliers..who wants that in thier neighborhood. I sure wouldnt and I think its a great idea. I might be a bit scared of retaliation but I can buy a gun..what a good idea..Fliers! Just mail one ot your local police department or better yet leave one on their windshield while they are in munching on a doughnut. Officer your eyes are glazed..have you been eating doughnuts?

yup. They can bust a guy for jay walking and forget about the important stuff like buying the guy in a ghilly suit and now a federal offense against him. Yup gotta love the cops......

well hell what would happen if everyone around one of the state owned methodone clinics would take survailance of them at work for a week humm alot of shady people comming and going, buying and then resaleing drugs they get from them methodone, sounds like a drug house to me ,BUT ITS RUN Y THE STATE AND FUELED BY PHARMICIES WHAT THE HELL IS THE DIFFERENCE its called money ,,,,,,,yup money in there pockets sale drugs to be resold sounds like a dealer to me WHATS NEXT WE CONNA GIVE ALL ALCOHOLICS BEER ,,,PEOPLE GET IT TOGETHER
11:25 AM on 10/23/2011
you obviously have done no research. the reason we have methadone clinics is because the physical withdrawals from opiates such as prescription painkillers and heroin are extremely hard to get over. imagine the worst flu you've ever had, times a million. hot and cold flashes, aching all over your body, restless legs, painful headaches, and crushing depression and cravings. quitting opiates makes quitting cigarettes look like a walk in the park. many people going to methadone clinics want to be able to go to work or school without being in withdrawals. methadone and suboxene are for maintenance, not for getting high. methadone clinics test the urine of new patients to make sure they are actually addicts and not just anybody looking to get high. how about you get addicted to painkillers (which can easily happen legally when someone is prescribed them and then cut off), and then try to withdraw off of them cold turkey. these drugs change the way you think, and if you don't have some sort of medication to aid in withdrawal, you will be constantly craving more opiates while you are sick without them.

Methadone clinics aren't just for "shady" people. Many everyday people get addicted to painkillers after an operation. It happens more than you realize.

Great idea ! Now everyone should print up flyers saying " illegals living here " ..print the address on it and send it to the immigration department. Also print up flyers saying.." illegals working here " .with the address of the company or store and report them also.!....All kidding aside , people thats a great idea, lets start doing that. !!!.

LMAO!!!!!! Smart neighbors!! I used to live next door to drug dealers and we sold our home and moved. But, not before they burned one of our cars, tore up our front lawn by trying to pull a car out of their yard, into mine. Also, they had steer, cow and various skulls laying around in their yard and a screech owl that flew around loose in their home. Make one of them mad and you're in for it, which is what my husband did, hence the burned car, torn up lawn. Therefore, I got him to sell the house and moved! Wish I had thought of doing what this neighbor did........hahaha!

There are several people in my neighborhood who are hateful, nosey, no-good troublemakers. They all have their nasty neighborhood clique together, spreading gossip and turning people against one another. They are supposedly "respectable" people with jobs and families, not druggies or thieves. Really great examples they set for their kids.

And I am SURE you advised the buyers of your home exactly what they were getting into, right? In some states, that constitutes fraud and can result in a lawsuit...as a former Realtor I know that we were required by law to advise prospective buyers about anything that might impact the life of the buyer, even if a house was considered haunted!!

Glad you got out, but don't be suprised if you feel hatred in the ether from your victims..I know, better them than you. Sleep tight.
11:08 PM on 10/23/2011
We are talking about neighbors, not the home or the property being sold. I understand we have to reveal problems with the house and property; but our personal relationships either good or bad I would not think fall under this umbrella? Sounds pretty absurd.

Just how far away does this fraud law extend to with what I am expected to both know and reveal to my prospective buyer? I should think the new buyer can look with their own eyes and see the skulls and animals, thus freeing the seller from that type of responsibility?

I am asking because my sister just bought a house and nobody said anything about the mechanics in the 2nd and 4th doors down from her place that routinely fix sport and race cars in their garages (MAJOR noise.) Would be great if there was some kind of recourse.

I think someone was using their brain the day they decided to make those fliers. What a great way to get the police to pay attention to the right place and people. I don't blame them a bit for taking matters into their own hands in a safe way. Drug dealers have no business in a neighborhood or indeed anywhere else. Another commented on the fact they bring robberies and murder with them , and they do eventually. I personally witnessed the house across from mine ( my former residence years ago) being surrounded by the police and a battering ram used to "open" the door , on 3 occasions. I went to the police station and talked to the chief of police after the second visit. I asked what was going on and he said he couldn't say , but they suspect drug activity in the neighborhood. Duh. We were able to move shortly after the 3rd battering ram incident. You don't sleep , you're on edge all the time.

They need a better Drug Task Force here. Unfortunately, there has to be a rather lengthy investigative process but not as long as this one. It's ridiculous the neighbors had to complain and get no action for so long!

Once there was enough suspicion and undercover cops making purchases, then they have to show enough probable cause to a judge to get a search warrant. In smaller cities like mine it doesn't take nearly so long as people here are getting sick and tired of the Detroit dealers snaking their way north to set up shop on "new" turf that is relatively violence-free.

Drug addictions leads to robberies, murders etc. Some are worse than others because if the addict cant support their habit, then they will steal from their family or whoever. A large percentage of people who go to prison were on alcohol and or drugs when they did the crime. From what I get of the story, it pays to advertise.
11:34 AM on 10/23/2011
WRONG! Prohibition leads to robberies and murders, not addiction. It is a proven fact that when addicts can get dosed for free or what they can pay in a safe manner, they go about their lives and do not feel compelled to rob and harm others. Remember, when it comes to drugs and abuse, it is always Prohibition at the core of the problem. People will always have addicts among them in society, and when they are treated as a health concern and not a criminal, they need not impact the rest of us negatively. The enemy is Prohibition , not our weaker and ill brothers and sisters.!!

Next you'll be the realtor who fails to inform the home buyer that the* FREE* Pot, Heroin, Meth, Crack and Booze Trucks love to circle around your block. Just listen for the nursery rhyme jingles! Sorry Cannabis, but that's just another slack-jawed stoner fantasy no matter where it's sold. I don't want to be anywhere near wherever these crazy whacked out addicts are. (And, I know, I know ... pot just makes everyone mellow.) Marijuana is just as physically and psychologically addictive as many other drugs. Ever hear of Wake 'n Bake, dude?
