This Week In Apple Rumors: Apple TV Sets, New MacBook Pros And iPad Minis

First Posted: 10/23/11 09:05 PM ET   Updated: 12/23/11 05:12 AM ET

Every week the numerous blogs covering the machinations of the Apple empire float tons of unconfirmed rumors, futuristic speculation, and questionably-sourced reports on what the company might be unveiling in the near or distant future. Let's take a look back at what these Mac blogs were excited about this week, from October 16 - 22. Check out last week's Apple rumors here, and follow me on Twitter for all the latest here.

Apple Is Going To Transform The Television Industry With Its HDTVs!

Finally, an Apple rumor that came straight from the mouth of Steve Jobs, and not from the wishful pen of a Wall Street analyst:

Apple has been working on building its own television set. Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson, in the book that is to be released October 24, that he "wanted to do for television sets what he had done for computers, music players, and phones: make them simple and elegant."

Here's the money quote, as published by the Washington Post:

"'I'd like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use,' he told me. 'It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud.' No longer would users have to fiddle with complex remotes for DVD players and cable channels. 'It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it.'"

And now, I suppose, we wait to see what "the simplest user interface you could imagine" might look like. For now, I'm thinking: giant click wheel.

So, it seems fairly certain that Apple will be pushing out HDTV sets some time in the future, given Jobs' passion for the project; but this wouldn't be This Week In Apple Rumors without source-less speculation and excitement-mongering release date claims.

I think if Apple actually does a TV, as opposed to the Apple TV add on box, it will be geared completely towards streaming. Much like they did with the Mac Mini, they will downgrade the connections on it. I imagine a TV, maybe mid sized around 40" or so, with a retina display, wireless, and an HDMI output for connection to a home theater. And that's it. No way to connect any other device such as cable or sattelite. All streaming. The remote would be an iOS device that is not included. Maybe they give you a basic remote, but full control would be via some elegant iOS app. Oh, and expensive!

The old PowerBook 1400 had a solar power/charger option. Nothing new there.

Because these Advertisements run every hour, consuming 40-50% of the Tech Section.

This a 27" apple cinema display and it a great picture! Why not a 60" with the same quality.

TV is ripe for r/evolution.
I'm looking at my FIOS, and as advanced as it is, it sucks as far as UI.
Just start with the remote. WAY too many buttons, and arrow keys, etc. Redundant keys, etc. Also, I KNOW there is a way I can 'program' my Fios with my Favorite channels without having to scroll through dozens of groups of channels I don't want. I know there's a way, but who really wants to figure that out? It will probably only disappear the next time power goes out.
Couldn't there have been an automated option to figure out your 'favorites'? Just calculate the time spent viewing different channels, and display them in that order (as an option)
One problem is there are too many monied interests between you and a good experience.
Downloading rentals? Comcast or Fios wants to control that.
Now Siri could really be a game changer (and a channel changer), and also there are lots of neat things they could do to use iPods/iPhones/and iPads as remotes.

FIOS just changed the set up, it's horrable...it was just bad before. I use the i-pad to program FIOS very easy.

You're right! Just the last 2 weeks, they somehow made the Guide more difficult to read! It's like they found some of the few aspects of their system that were ok, and set out to wreck them!

I always said that Jobs would die happy if he nailed the TV issue. I say it will have built in solid state memory (or a hard drive), built in WiFi. The interface? Siri.

I think the Samsung is rite about the Nexus.....there might be some similarity due to some high competition between the companies but with out any proof its hard to say that they are copying anything..................http://www.saqibimran.com/

I see a lot of people mad at Apple - but I think it's important to distinguish between Apple and it's actual quality based innovation and separate it from the simpleminded destroy-destroy-destroy approach employed by others who don't do innovation, but instead only count efficiency and monetary figures to the detriment of quality or benefit to consumers. Apple designs things right here even if it manufactures elsewhere. and Apple isn't in the same boat as other businesses (they're far from perfect, but do WAY more good than harm). Occupy Wall street and liberals like myself need to fight the right target continue to go after big money in politics, banks, and (please now IS the time) health insurance companies. We can throw in our anti-competitive telecommunication industry as well (how many cable & internet competitors can you truly choose from? - in Europe they have 10x FIOS speed at half the price due to competition). My point is - this is not the company to be mad at. The good Apple jobs remain here in the US and numerous tangential industries benefit from it's innovation (medicine, video, audio, graphic design, etc). And music is now less expensive and more a la carte (last time I checked, Bruce, U2 and Madonna were still rich). Maybe Apple should tackle hospital applications so we can get the price of healthcare down while we simultaneously remove insurers as the middleman.

I prefer the bigger ipad screen, but I could see why they would come out with a smaller just because the price would come down alot more.

Is society getting so stupid they are going to be sold on the idea that a television is too complicated to figure out? I will have to tell that to my 80 year old parents, because they've been using those complicated dvr's, dvd's and clickers without even knowing their too stupid to figure them out.

when you have a Tivo, cable box, apple TV box, maybe a Logitech google box you need a programmable remote to control it all and there are a ton of wires. How about a nice sleek TV with memory built in, internet access built in, no wires dangling and voice controlled? Sure you can manage all the devices and find all your remotes but there is definitely room for improvement. And if Apple is the first one out the gate with a TV like that everyone will follow.

No, people are so smart they realize that it isn't worth the time to learn a system that is unnecessarily complicated.
Are you really proud that you've mastered your remote?

Yes, I'm proud I mastered my remote. That took about 3 minutes of my time. I must be a genius. And I don't have to yell across the room to change the channel. I can see this as really convenient when channel surfing. Next, next, next, next, next, next, stop, next,next,next,next.........

More things made in another country (China) that eliminate American jobs. Thanks Steve Job

iPods, iPhones, etc, were never made in the US, so please explain how anything was 'eliminated'?
Besides, your country held so much of the wealth of the world for the last 100 years, could you not produce a population that aspire to things higher than assembling cell phones?

Not much is 'made' in China, many things are assembled in China. See patients from Korea, Taiwan and Japan.

A voice-activated television set might be the one Apple product I could consider buying. The first company to eliminate the remote wins my business.
