Turkey Earthquake 2011: 7.2 Quake Near Ercis Causes Death, Damage

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/23/11 10:59 AM ET Updated: 12/23/11 05:12 AM ET

CNN reports that a 7.2 earthquake has struck Eastern Turkey, making it the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in ten years.

The quake was felt in the provinces of Diyarbakir, Erzurum, Siirt, Mus and Agri, according to Bloomberg News.

UPDATE:

The USGS reports a second earthquake of 6.0 magnitude, this time in Eastern Turkey.

ANKARA, Turkey — Cries of panic and horror filled the air as a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey, killing at least 88 people as buildings pancaked and crumpled into rubble.

Tens of thousands fled into the streets running, screaming or trying to reach relatives on cell phones as apartment and office buildings cracked or collapsed. As the full extent of the damage became clear, survivors dug in with shovels or even their bare hands, desperately trying to rescue the trapped and the injured.

"My wife and child are inside! My 4-month-old baby is inside!" CNN-Turk television showed one young man sobbing outside a collapsed building in Van, the provincial capital.

The hardest hit area was Ercis, an eastern city of 75,000 close to the Iranian border, which lies on one of Turkey's most earthquake-prone zones. The bustling city of Van, about 55 miles (90 kilometers) to the south, also sustained substantial damage. Highways in the area caved in and Van's airport was damaged, forcing flights to be diverted.

TRT television reported that 59 people were killed and 150 injured in Ercis, 25 others died in Van and four people, including a child, died in the nearby province of Bitlis. It said at least nine people were pulled out of debris alive.

Up to 80 buildings collapsed in Ercis, including a dormitory, and 10 buildings collapsed in Van, the Turkish Red Crescent said. Some highways also caved in.

Authorities advised people to stay away from any damaged homes, warning they could collapse in the aftershocks. U.S. scientists recorded over 100 aftershocks in eastern Turkey within ten hours of the quake, including one with a magnitude of 6.0.

Residents in Van and Ercis lit camp fires, preparing to spend the night outdoors while the Red Crescent began setting up tents in a stadium. Others fled to seek shelter with relatives in nearby villages.

Rescue efforts went deep into the night under generator-powered floodlights. Workers tied steel rods around large concrete slabs in Van, then lifted them with heavy machinery.

Residents sobbed outside the ruins of one flattened eight-story building, hoping that missing relatives would be found. Witnesses said eight people were pulled from the rubble, but frequent aftershocks hampered search efforts. By late evening, some joy emerged as a ninth, a teenage girl, was pulled out alive.

Around 1,275 rescue teams from 38 provinces were being sent to the region, officials said, and troops were also assisting search-and-rescue efforts.

In Ercis, heavy machinery stopped working and people were ordered to keep silent as rescuers tried to listen for possible survivors inside a seven-story building housing 28 families, NTV reported.

Some inmates escaped a prison in Van after one of its walls collapsed. TRT television said around 150 inmates had fled, but a prison official said the number was much smaller and many later returned.

Many buildings also collapsed in the district of Celebibag, near Ercis, including student dormitories, hotels and gas stations.

"There are many people under the rubble," Veysel Keser, the mayor of Celebibag, told NTV. "People are in agony, we can hear their screams for help."

Nazmi Gur, a legislator from Van, said his nephew's funeral ceremony was cut short due to the quake and he rushed back to help.

"We managed to rescue a few people, but I saw at least five bodies," Gur told The Associated Press."It was such a powerful temblor. It lasted for such a long time,"

"But now we have no electricity, there is no heating, everyone is outside in the cold," he added.

Authorities had no information yet on remote villages but the governor was touring the region by helicopter and the government sent in tents, field kitchens and blankets.

The earthquake also shook buildings in neighboring Armenia and Iran.

In the Armenian capital of Yerevan, 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Ercis, people rushed into the streets in fear but no damage or injuries were reported. Armenia was the site of a devastating earthquake in 1988 that killed 25,000 people.

Sunday's quake caused panic in several Iranian towns close to the Turkish border and caused cracks in buildings in the city of Chaldoran, Iranian state TV reported.

Leaders around the world conveyed their condolences and offered assistance.

"We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Turkish ally in this difficult time, and are ready to assist," President Barack Obama said.

Israeli President Shimon Peres telephoned Turkish President Abdullah Gul to offer assistance.

"Israel shares in your sorrow," Peres said in a statement. "Israel is ready to render any assistance that may be required anywhere in Turkey, at any time."

The offer came despite a rift in relations following an 2010 Israeli navy raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that left nine Turks dead. Greece, which has a deep dispute with Turkey over the divided island of Cyprus, also offered to send in a special earthquake rescue team.

Turkey lies in one of the world's most active seismic zones and is crossed by numerous fault lines. In 1999, two earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 7 struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

More recently, a 6.0-magnitude quake in March 2010 killed 51 people in eastern Turkey, while in 2003, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake killed 177 people in the southeastern city of Bingol.

Istanbul, the country's largest city with more than 12 million people, lies in northwestern Turkey near a major fault line. Experts have warned that overcrowding and shoddy construction in Istanbul could kill tens of thousands if a major earthquake struck.

"...Michele Bachmann said she opposed the United Nations taking away gun rights ...."

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid, part two. I hate sequels, because the original is almost always better produced than the follow-up. Bush and his team were much better fearmongers than poor Bachmann could even dream of being.

In 1999 there was a strong earth in Turkey. That was the height of the Clinton years. Israel was slowly moving towards reconciliation with Muslims (especially Turkey). Europe was considering Turkey for the EU. Although up to 30,000 may have died, teams from 20 countries, many EU, American and a very effective team from Israel (they have experience with collapsed buildings), found and saved thousands of trapped people.

That was before the Islamic party took over in Turkey. Also before the EU rejected Turkey's bid to join. Also before Turkey broke off cooperation with NATO over the Iraq war.

Conclusion: Why should that matter? Your people are dying! They need help! Just to "show" your adversaries? Politicians are the most dangerous morons on earth.

Our founding fathers often said that they will reluctantly accept leadership. We should go that way one more step: Anyone seeking power should be denied power.

Government should not be confused with the people that live there. We should be more in touch with our humanity and stop punishing those that are not to blame for government. The victims in the earthquake are no more to blame for the government positions and actions as were those that died in the attack on the twin towers.

I feel bad for those people, but let me guess..they will rebuild on the same sites, and get hit again in 10 yrs.
06:46 AM on 10/26/2011
Yes, the people will likely rebuild in the same sites because that is a quite harsh region with few areas well-suited to permanent habitation.

When--not if--a huge earthquake strikes Istanbul it too will be rebuilt just as will happen in San Francisco or Los Angeles or Tokyo.

I have to wonder if the Turkish government is declining outside assistance for earthquake victims, because the area is primarily Kurdish.
03:29 PM on 10/24/2011
Well actually,. The Turkish government didn't act until a couple of hours later. The Turkish army REFUSED to help the civilians.
After 24 hours some villages still have not received any help so far. People are wondering what is taking the Turkish government so long to send any help at all.
Apparently it is going to snow tonight in East-Turkey and it will be -2 degrees Celsius .

It is now known that Turkish soldiers have attacked Kurdish villages that are beyond the Turkish borders. So instead of helping the people the Turkish government decides to bomb them...
02:08 AM on 10/26/2011
White Life:

Can you show proof that the Turkish army refused to help civilians? Are you perhaps saying that individual army member or small units refused to abandon their posts without orders?

Yes, it is now known that Turkey is making attacks inside the Kurdish area of Iraq. Are you OK with the fact that PKK Kurds from Iraq are daily going to Kurdish villages in Turkey demanding young boys be given to them lest they kill the family? Are you also OK with daily attacks by PKK Kurds on Turkish soldiers (many of whom ARE Kurdish) and police stations? Are you also OK with Kurdish tribal leaders in Turkey who extort money from the Turkish government to all the building/improvement of roads, schools and hospitals in the Kurdish area while still ordering children (especially girls) not to attend school?

Save your Kurdish sob stories for those--including most of the ethnic Kurds in Turkey--for those who are truly stupid or merely ignorant.
06:59 PM on 10/24/2011
Well, the situation is under control, it is not a densely populated area. So, despite the great magnitude of the earthquake, number of buildings that went down are limited. Turkish rescue teams and emergency resources are more than enough because they have been actually preparing for a much larger earthquake that is expected in Istanbul in the future. They will accept the help when they need it for rebuilding and relief efforts.

Turkey is getting what it deserves. It has tilted toward being an Islamic country, aligned with Iran. it should be bodily kicked out of NATO. It is not an NATO ally; did not allow US planes to cross into Iraq under Bush. It has kicked Israel in the face by sending a flotilla to break the blockade of Gaza, a Hamas stronghold. G-d is looking down on Turkey. No one crosses Israel and gets away with it.

- Tilted toward being an Islamic country. Nowhere NEAR, stop with the hyperbole.
- No one should have allowed US planes to cross into Iraq.
- Israel kicked itself in the face.
- "No one crosses Israel and gets away with it" ... Oh please.

I hope they allow Israel to send in their teams of doctors, searchers, and relief rescue and resourses. Thoe it takes tramas to realize humanatarian aid and swift rescue is needed, but mostly from your neighbors.

Imagine a major fire in LA, big, going to take a bit to get it under control, and longer to get it out.

Now imagine people saying that the LAFD should take up an offer from Texas to send some firefighters to help.

With over a thousand Turkish rescue teams mobilised, backed up by three battalions of the second largest army in NATO, the Turkish civilian air services moving in massive amounts of shelter, food, etc, to waiting ground vehicles, and a disaster response center having pre-laid plans to handle this sort of situation, can you honestly come up with anything that the Israeli (or Armenian, American, Pakistani, Portugese, etc. etc. etc.) rescue teams could offer that would offset the logistical problems of trying to integrate them into the ongoing effort?

I know that it is upsetting that there won't be those nice PR shots like there were in Haiti, or PR pieces that ignore all those other nations faster and, in a lot of cases, more effective, contributions, but get over it already.
