Coffee May Keep World's Most Common Cancer At Bay, New Research Shows

Coffee Cancer

First it was cutting the risk of depression, now skin cancer -- when it comes to the health benefits of coffee, the good news keeps rolling in.

New research presented at an American Association for Cancer Research conference suggests daily joe consumption may help reduce the risk of basal cell carcinoma, the world's most common cancer.

Women who drank more than three cups of caffeinated java daily saw a 20 percent reduction in risk, while men saw a 9 percent reduction, compared to people who had less than one cup per month. The researchers also tested for a possible connection between coffee consumption and decreased risk of melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma risk -- two other skin cancer types -- but found none.

"Although we cannot conclude from our study that the inverse association between coffee and BCC is causal, it is consistent with the inverse association between coffee and the risks of other cancer sites," said researcher Fengju Song, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in the department of dermatology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She cited a recent meta-analysis that found adding one cup of coffee a day decreased overall cancer risk by 3 percent.

"Furthermore, our study shows that the inverse association with BCC appears due to caffeine, not other components in the coffee consumption," she continued, explaining that decaf coffee appeared to have no effect.

The researchers are not sure what, exactly, is behind the apparent link between coffee and BCC risk, nor do they understand exactly why it seems to impact only the one type of skin cancer.

"It does suggest that there is something in caffeine that may have a specific effect on the pathway for BCC development," said Dr. Robert S. Kirsner, vice chairman of dermatology and cutaneous surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. "This would likely lead people to get back into the lab and try and figure out how caffeine might effect that pathway."

In a statement, Song shared her belief that the findings could eventually have great potential public health impact, given the high number of basal cell carcinomas, both in the U.S. and abroad. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the vast majority of skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas, and they affect more than 2 million Americans every year.

BCCs often look like waxy bumps, flat scaly patches or ordinary skin sores that develop on areas of the body regularly exposed to the sun. They are easily treatable in their early stage, though complications do exist and include increased recurrence rates and increased risk of other types of skin cancer, as well as a chance of spreading to other parts of the body in rare, aggressive cases.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common cause is spending a lot of time in the sun or tanning booths.

"We think that sun exposure in childhood and acute exposure, as opposed to prolonged exposure -- so a blistering sunburn -- are the biggest factors," Kirsner said. "This study, which suggests that there's something in adulthood that you can do to diminish the risk from childhood, is exciting."

But does it mean that non-coffee drinkers should take up the habit?

Absolutely not, experts say, cautioning that the research is very preliminary.

However, current coffee drinkers can take heart in what appears to be yet another potential benefit of java consumption.

"If you're a coffee drinker and you're at risk for BCC, then I think this a reason not to change your behavior," Kirsner said. "This should go into the equation of good versus bad when it comes to coffee and your own risks."

Wrong Coffee causes cancer, research prop 65

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acrylamide

Is there a risk from eating foods that contain acrylamide?

Acrylamide caused cancer in animals in studies where animals were exposed to acrylamide at very high doses. Acrylamide causes nerve damage in people exposed to very high levels at work. FDA has not yet determined the exact public health impact, if any, of acrylamide from the much lower levels found in foods. FDA is conducting research studies to determine whether acrylamide in food is a potential risk to human health.

What we already know is that plant foods, like coffee, contain thousands of phytochemicals that BY DEFINITION, benefit the body's health. Webmd.com has an article listing other benefits of drinking coffee like reducing type 2 diabetes. People with a sensitivity to caffeine need to be careful just like people allergic to peanuts need to watch out for peanuts. The problem with coffee has been by judging it due to one thing in it-- caffeine.

Doing this would be like taking the nightshade plants (macrobiotics does this), tomatoes, eggplant and potatoes, and saying that they are bad for you since they contain nicotine. They do contain some nictotine but they are healthy for you. Also it would be like taking some vegetables, like lima beans, and saying that since they have some naturally occurring cyanide, they are bad for you. Lima beans do contain some cyanide but are healthy for you.

This paper has 2 recent artcles on the health benefits of chocolate. It has caffeine in it. Also green tea has caffeine in it and caffeine causes high blood pressure. But studies show that green tea lowers high blood pressure. http://bit.ly/afK0hM The worst part about chocolate is the milk and sugar they add to it. That is also the worst part about the coffee also-- the sugar and milk. But they do have healthy alternatives like honey and coconut milk.

This may be true. The caffeine in coffee may have a protein inhibitor which obstructs or hampers RNA and DNA replication. If caffeine does prove to beneficial, the makers of skin lotions should begin clinical trials on those susceptible to BCC. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with BCC on my nose (ala). I refused to have it removed, although I probably should have. The reason that I didn't have it removed, was because I don't think that all BCC are cancers in the traditional sense. What I have is more like a flesh-eating bacterial or viral microorganism slowing chowing away at my nose. I have been using heat treatment to stop it and it finally is looking more like healthy skin.

About the only reason I get out of bed in the morning is because I start craving a cup of coffee.

It's not often in life that something that tastes so good turns out to be good for you. I certainly agree with the research about coffee fending off depression. I'm over 3 cups a day and probably the happiest gal I know. Thanks to the researchers. I'll enjoy it as long as I can... or until the next study.

My dad abruptly ended his 60+ years of being a heavy coffer drinker. Within a year, this healthy 74-year old man was diagnosed with cancer... Two years later, gone.

My siblings and I began drinking coffee with our parents as teens in the great tradition of my paternal grandparents. French press or espresso ... yes, serious coffee drinkers. Love my coffee ...

I am a coffee Drinker for years, between 8 to 16 cups a day. I am glad to know it helps against skin Cancer. I have had cancer [Thyroid] and in remission and the doctors have always told me NOT to stop drinking coffee, but just cut it down some.

Two thousand years ago, studying for final exams ... I consumed about 12 cups of coffee without realizing how much I had taken in ... By night, I was in an ambulance ... my body locked. The ER doc explained my body was reacting to an over-consumption of the "oil" from the coffee beans. Since then, unable to drink anything but espressos or french press.

I should print this article out and give it to my doctor since he wants me to cut out coffee because of my elevated blood pressure.
