Obama Draws Fire For Las Vegas Comments Ahead Of Visit

Obama Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — President Barack Obama has a Sin City problem that won't go away.

Obama is counting on Nevada's support for reelection next year. He easily won the Las Vegas Valley in 2008 and will probably win the largely Democratic, urban center again next year.

But Nevada state officials and residents of this economically ravaged state are still fuming over comments they perceived as rants against the tourism industry. Las Vegas city leaders have been feuding with him over the comments since he first made them two years ago, and Republicans are hoping that fury will point voters in their direction.

The friction has resurfaced as Obama is about to visit a Las Vegas neighborhood Monday as part of a nationwide tour to sell his jobs plan. Obama's visit comes as Republican presidential candidates, business titans and former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman continue to remind people that Obama has twice hated on Las Vegas tourism – this western swing state's largest employer. The jabs are notable because casino-dependent Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the nation, and Obama can't afford to have voters blame him as his Republican rivals try to convince the nation that they would do a better job of turning the stalled economy around. Nevada's unemployment remained steady at 13.4 percent last month.

"He said it more than once," said former Nevada Gov. Bob List, a national Republican committeeman. "You can't un-ring the bell. You have to live with what you say. It just shows a lack of understanding of the engine that drives the state."

The feud began in 2009, when Obama admonished corporations using federal bailout money: "You can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer's dime." A year later, Obama warned families against gambling away college tuition: "You don't blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you're trying to save for college."

The call for financial responsibility didn't sit well with some Las Vegans, and Democratic and Republican lawmakers in Nevada all lashed back at the time. Even Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Obama's most prominent ally in Congress and Nevada's senior senator, told Obama to "lay off Las Vegas."

Obama later clarified to the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce in February 2010, "Let me set the record straight: I love Vegas...There you go. Always have. I love Vegas."

With Obama campaigning for a second term, the president's critics are eager to call the outcry to mind.

"Perception is reality," said Republican Rep. Joe Heck, who represents southern Nevada. "After those statements were made, we had conventions call and pull out, so it did in fact cost Las Vegas business."

The National Republican Senatorial Committee released a scathing web ad hitting Obama for his economic record and comments on Vegas, in addition to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.), who is running for U.S. Senate in 2012.

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich said in Tuesday's Republican presidential debate, "And unlike President Obama, I'm glad to be in Las Vegas."

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who won Nevada's caucuses in 2008, pointed to Obama's Vegas statements while campaigning here last week. He reminded voters of them in a statement sent out before Obama landed in Nevada Monday.

"My guess is it did not help when he talked down Las Vegas as a convention city, did it?" Romney told dozens of supporters gathered at his campaign headquarters in Las Vegas last week.

Las Vegas saw 3.3 million visitors in August, 2.8 percent more than the same month last year, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. But gambling revenues were down 6.7 percent for the same period in Clark County, home to the Las Vegas Strip and the vast majority of Nevadans.

Michael Bonner, chairman of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, said Obama's critics read too much into his Vegas comments.

"There was a measurable impact on convention and trade business following those comments, but the intent of the president was certainly not to damage the economy here," said Bonner, who has donated to Democratic and Republican candidates in recent years.

List, the former Republican governor, said Republicans plan to remind voters at every opportunity that Obama slammed the industry that controls the livelihoods of most Nevadans.

"A lot of people out of work won't forget it any time soon," List said.

What's wrong with his.. you dont want people blowing money at the Casino when they dont have a job or trying to hold onto one... Very sound advice..

What's next.. Obama should preach Polygamy if and when he visits Utah...

Las Vegas needs a Wall Street Protesers Group and they need it badly.
Common sense calls for them to get into supporting the joblessness
issue, and investigating the banks that caused the mortgage crisis,
instead of criticizing Obama. When people have jobs and a roof over
their head, they look to gamble and take pleasure trips. They
can't hide behind the problem when they know the politics are
doing takeovers, and the power is obvious.
They can't play Switzerland and watch it from the outside anymore.

If the people of Las Vegas do not learn their lesson from the fist time around, they will deserve the results of the second time around. The man is an economic idiot of the first order, and does not believe in free enterprise or the Constitution, period.

the truth hurts Nevada huh?
You economy is based on other peoples disposable income or their desperate attempt at getting money they need.

Oh i forgot the part of your economy based on having very lax corporate laws regarding scamming people which is why fly by night businesses flock to NV

Then again banks that love to screw people flock to Del or ND

What a non-story. Obama draws fire just by breathing. The Vegas comments are old news and have nothing to do with the financial woes and the unemployment picture in the Vegas Valley.

Tourism is up but revenues are down. People just don't have the disposable cash to spend anymore. The banks have it all, along with their hedge-fund Wall Street allies. They're out to break the back of America in an attempt to keep Obama from being reelected. They are the real gamblers, wagering on a failed economy to make them even richer.

Gambling is a tax on the statistically challenged...all repubs should be against it. Casinos are literally banking on the folks who are willing to pay the tax.

I don't have any money to gamble, and if I had a lot of money, I'd sooner give it to charity than gamble it on Las Vegas. This whole controversy proves one thing - that Las Vegas is full of a bunch of parasites preying on that old idiotic fantasy that you can become a billionaire by breaking the banks at Las Vegas.

We have a Las Vegas casino economy, and look at the results.

My suggestion to Vegas is simple. Stop exploiting your fellow human beings. Diversity the economy. Find legitimate ways to earn a living. By the way, if you try to get revenge by voting GOP - I've got more sade news. You'll have far fewer people with disposable incomes and far fewer visitors.

Your comment would be true if it said "everyone who isn't rich" has less money. The wealthy have seen their wealth increase while middle class income has stagnated.

This country is suffering under a multitude of issues that have created the downturn in this economy. Republicans changed many laws when they had the power ~ to benefit the RICH. They deregulated Wall Street and the mortgage industry and systematically changed the tax codes to benefit their rich buddies. That is why we now have less revenue from the rich and big corporations.

Under Clinton, big business and the rich paid their fair share and our economy thrived. The rich have gotten richer, the middle class is evaporating, and the poor are worse off than ever before.

The Wall Street meltdown happened under George Bush. We are still reeling from this today. All of those changes i.e. "chickens" came home to roost.

President Obama has done a lot of great things for this country. He isn't perfect, but he does care about the middle class and the poor.

When will the Republican party start working on behalf of the American people? They won't ~ because they are bought and paid for by big corporations and the rich.

Thinking Americans know that electing a Republican in 2012 would be more of the same disasterous policies that killed the middle class.

Why do you think the working class is "occupying Wall Street"... Duh...

Lift the veil.... see the truth.

I don't think all the business owners in Las Vegas are going to forget the comments that kept the tourist away, No Conventions. He's got a short memory of how that effected all. I know Fl. didn't. He's 86'd in Fl. shouldn't waste the time or money here. He has shown his true being by acting like nothing before matters. Goofy in 2012 so far best looking one yet.

Vegas is famous for being a place to go to let your hair down and go wild. It really is silly of these "officials" to be upset about a small comment made two plus years ago. President Obama was right to point out to people that maybe they should think twice about gambling their money away, if they are having financial troubles already. How irresponsible of those Vegas promoters and politicians and how greedy of them and how shameful of them to be upset about that.

So the Obama nay-sayers are saying the banks that were bailed out with taxpayer money should celebrate by taking a trip to Vegas and the casinos? That homeowners struggling with college tuition should use that money gambling in Vegas!

It's about time they get over it and try focusing on some of the problems they are facing like 1 in 4 homes being in foreclosure.

You underestimate the power of the people, my friend.

The anger has been brewing since the Wall Street meltdown in 2008, on Bush's watch. Most thinking Americans know that Obama inherited Bush's mess and is STILL trying to dig this country out of the hole created by the greed on Wall Street and in the banking industry.

The Repubs just can't seem to take responsibility for all of those laws THEY changed that created the opportunity for Wall Street and mortgage bankers to run amuck.

But, hey, you keep thinking that Nevada will flip if it makes you feel better.

They have to distract people with something, even if it was good advice from two years ago.
