Sean Lennon Performs At Occupy Wall Street With Rufus Wainwright (VIDEO)

Sean Ono Lennon Rufus Wainwright

In 1971, John Lennon moved to New York City, led protests against both racism and the Vietnam war, and released the seminal album "Imagine," which included both the world famous title track and another song called "Give Me Some Truth." Forty years later, his younger son Sean descended upon Occupy Wall Street to call for some truth of his own.

The singer/songwriter, who has put out both solo albums and a new record with his band "Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger," paid a visit down to Zuccotti Park and performed a song with Rufus Wainwright. But instead of their own songs, the duo chose another tune for the occasion: Madonna's "Material Girl."

"Just played, 'Material Girl,' by Madonna at Occupy Wallstreet w Josh Fox, Dustin Hamman, and Rufus Wainwright! The revolution is televised!" Lennon tweeted afterwards. He also posted photos on his Tumblr, which you can check out by clicking here.

"All we are saying... is... uh... corporations SUCK!"
09:19 PM on 10/24/2011
Really? so what do you suggest? Is the corporation that made your clothes, or your car, or your i pad, or your food in that category as well? How about the opressive EPA? How about P diddy's corporation or russell simmons or J lo? They are all corporations.

PART 1

What a cliche: "the opressive [sic] EPA." You weren't around when the Cuyahoga an Detroit Rivers caught fire, or when camping and fishing at Lake Erie was spoiled by all the dead fish washing ashore.

It took decades, but today Lake Erie is cleaner, and is a beautiful lake to watch and to play in. No more fires, either:

"Each day, Detroit, Cleveland and 120 other municipalities fill Erie with 1.5 billion gallons of "inaequately treated wastes, including nitrates and phosphates ... These chemicals act as fertilizer for growths of algae that suck oxygen from the lower depths and rise to the surface as odoriferous green scum ... Commercial and game fish—blue pike, whitefish, sturgeon, northern pike—have nearly vanished, yielding the waters to trash fish that need less oxygen. Weeds proliferate, turning water frontage into swamp. In short, Lake Erie is in danger of dying by suffocation. – Time Magazine, August 1969[40]

PART 2

"These events embarrassed officials and spurred local officials, including Cleveland's director of public utilities, Ben Stefanski, to pursue a massive effort to "scrub the Cuyahoga"; the effort cost $100 billion in bonds, according to one estimate.[40] New sewer lines were built.[40] Clevelanders approved a bond issue by 2 to 1 to seriously upgrade Cleveland's sewage system.[40] Federal officials acted as well; the United States Congress passed the Clean Water Act of 1972.[78][79] In that year, the United States and Canada established water pollution limits in an International Water Quality Agreement. The controls were effective, but it took several decades to take effect; by 1999, there were signs that large numbers of mayflies were spotted on the lake after a forty-year absence signalling a return to health.[11][71]"

The fish, clean waters and mayflies are coming back, but there are fewer residents to enjoy them. No businesses, no jobs, no people.

I was a kid when the river caught on fire several times. It is an odd story for my kids to hear, about how a river actually caught on fire it had so much toxins and trash in it. What a time it was!

Gee, I can't remember - what celebrities and notables entertained and attended the Tea Party rallies?
08:05 PM on 10/24/2011
Several musicians did engage in legal action to stop GOP candidates from playing their songs at rallies...does that count?
