Vatican Calls For Radical Economic Reform Of World's Financial Systems

By VICTOR L. SIMPSON   10/24/11 08:49 AM ET  AP

Vatican

VATICAN CITY -- The Vatican called Monday for radical reform of the world's financial systems, including the creation of a global political authority to manage the economy.

A proposal by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace calls for a new world economic order based on ethics and the "achievement of a universal common good." It follows Pope Benedict XVI's 2009 economic encyclical that denounced a profit-at-all-cost mentality as responsible for the global financial meltdown.

The proposal acknowledges, however, that a "long road still needs to be traveled before arriving at the creation of a public authority with universal jurisdiction" and suggests the reform process begin with the United Nations as a point of reference.

Vatican pronouncements on the economy are meant to guide world leaders as well as the global church. United States Roman Catholic bishops, for example, have released a voter guide for the 2012 election that highlights social concerns such as ending poverty.

"It is an exercise of responsibility not only toward the current but above all toward future generations, so that hope for a better future and confidence in human dignity and capacity for good may never be extinguished," the document said.

It highlights that reforms must assure that financial and monetary policies will not damage the weakest economies while also achieving fair distribution of the world's wealth.

The proposal also called for a "minimum, shared body of rules to manage the global financial market," lamenting the "overall abrogation of controls" on capital movements.

While past Vatican pronouncements have condemned unfettered capitalism, the latest criticized "an economic liberalism that spurns rules and controls."

It also attacked "utilitarian thinking," saying what is useful to the individual does not always favor the common good.

This is a good thing. Criticize the Pope and the Church all you want, but it's still a good thing. Most of us should be very grateful for this. Whether you're Christian or not !

The Vatican City is a country, and they have their own world bank, and currency. Me thinks this is because they are concerned about their investments, loans, and exchange rates than anything to do with the good of the people. They are always trying to shame other countries on human rights issues, yet they refuse to grant equal rights to women, and shamefully protect the past actions of child rapists for fear of legal action and public relation issues (which means the negative press of protecting some, must be a better trade off than if we knew the truth of how many and for how long).

I don't think the Catholic Church or the Pope has much moral credibility these days. And the wounds are entirely self-inflicted.

The pontiff needs to start in his own house first.

The Pope is correct about needing economic reform, but to surrender sovereignty of nation-states' economies may not be forthcoming. A middle balance is needed if a world wide economic reform be made possible.

Has it worked yet? Has Ratzinger managed to divert attention away from how he, his minions, archbishops, bishops, moved pedophile priests around from parish to parish, from country to country one step ahead of the law?

No?

Didn't think so. But I'm sure he's got another diversionary tactic tucked up his watered-silk sleeve.

As a former Catholic and Quaker I normally disagree with the Holy Father on a great number of occasions... But this is something I can get behind! I

And now ladies and gentleman a word from a medieval cult of warped frustrated old virgins. I know I wait on the Holy See’s wisdom during these times of difficulty. Next week Ratzinger will do a PowerPoint on the love and care of children in the flock.

The Vat needs a Radical Reform of the Worlds Religious System. The criminals within the system aid and abett crimes against children and adults and then the whole religious system hides and refuses to disclose evidence to law agents. Also the stealing of individual funds when they come to your deathbed to be signed on as benificiares to your will. They really cannot contain the pure evil behind the deed, the fathers, bishops don't believe in their own religious oaths or the penalties otherwise why would they do the crime ?

Somebody should do an exposé on the Vatican's money laundering, and offshore banking schemes.

The Mafia's been using Vatican banks to stash the cash for years. Clean your own house first Benny, then we can start working on world financial systems.

So in other words, one of the wealthiest organizations on the planet, who's old, white, male leader is literally draped in silk, encrusted in diamonds and gold, and lives in a palace, is calling on the population at large (which it commonly refers to as its flock) to reform their economic ways.
Hmmm..... That sounds about right.
