Chaz Bono Eliminated: 'Dancing With The Stars' Cuts LGBT Activist (VIDEO)

10/26/11 12:07 AM ET   AP

LOS ANGELES — Chaz Bono has gotten his walking papers on "Dancing with the Stars."

Tuesday's edition of the hit ABC show marked the last dance for Bono. Despite his cheerful, spirited style, he had struggled from the beginning and came in last in the judges' assessment the night before.

When he got the bad news, the transgender activist said he had come on the program "to show America a different kind of man."

"If there was somebody like me on TV when I was growing up, my whole life would have been different," he said.

Soccer star Hope Solo, who also was in jeopardy, avoided being sent home and will stay in contention.

Along with her, five other celebrities remain in the contest: actors David Arquette and J.R. Martinez, reality TV personality Rob Kardashian, and TV hosts Ricki Lake and Nancy Grace. Judges' scores combined with viewer votes determine who is kicked off the show each week.

Monday's episode had included insults, an animal comparison and two nearly perfect performances.

A heated exchange between professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy and head judge Len Goodman stole the spotlight from first-place finishers Lake and Martinez.

Chmerkovskiy and his partner, Solo, landed near the bottom of the judges' leaderboard Monday. With 20 points out of 30, they finished just ahead of Bono, in last place with 19 points.

When Goodman called Solo's rumba "your worst dance of the whole season," Chmerkovskiy suggested the judge get out of the dance business.

Chmerkovskiy told one of the show's hosts that the judges seem to pick on certain contestants, and he kept up the conversation after Monday's episode.

"The judges have their favorites," he said. "They always have."

Bono's professional partner, Lacey Schwimmer, agreed.

"They always have their favorites, and this season it's completely clear who they are. I won't name names, but we are not one of them," she said. "I'm actually proud of what Maks said. A lot of us don't get the chance to stand up for us and our partners."

Schwimmer cried backstage during Monday's episode and was still upset after the show, when she complained about the judges' "rude" remarks about Bono.

"Every week he gets referred to as an animal," she said. "They always comment on his personality, and last I checked, this was a dancing show."

After the couple danced their tango, judge Bruno Tonioli said Bono was like "a cute little penguin trying to be a big menacing bird of prey." Tonioli had also compared Bono to an Ewok.

Carson Kressley, Chynna Phillips, Kristin Cavallari, Elisabetta Canalis and Ron Artest have already been eliminated this season.

Chaz should have gone week 1. If this were a contest on skill alone, he would have been out. He can't dance. How did he make it this far?

Oh, right. He had LGBT behind him. I think singling him out positively is just as bad as those singling him out negatively. It was a dancing competition and he couldn't dance.

I find it funny that Lacey agreed with Maks because when he said that "some people are given an A for effort" he was talking about Chaz and Nancy.

Has Mr. Tonioli made similar comments to other contestants? Are comments like the ones he made to Mr. Bono part of the show's appeal? If he singled out Mr. Bono for abusive treatment, his behavior should be unacceptable to viewers of DWTS. However, if all parties were aware that comments like the ones Mr. Tomioli made are this part of the DWTS experience, Mr. Bono should accept the bump in his public profile and work to sustain it.

Chaz whined on Good Morning America, "I was called a basketball, a penguin, an Ewok, and I just didn't appreciate it." Candidly appropriate descriptions of the way she looked and danced.

Well, we knew he wasn't going to win, but making it as far as he did was fantastic and still, the amount of visibility he brought to the LGBT community is amazing. As Chaz said, if there had been someone like him on television growing up, his life would have been different and he can take pride in knowing that for some child out there who watched his every performance each week, their live will be different. Well done, Chaz, you did us all proud!

On the whole I think the judges were very kind and encouraging to Chaz. They have been truly cutting to some of the others like Hope whom they seem to dislike but never to Chaz. As for Bruno. he always goes over-the-top in his remarks but he wasn't being mean. Considering the fact that Chaz was not a very good dancer, I think the fact he stayed on as long as he did shows that the judges and fans were rooting for him.

OK, we can all agree that Chaz is not the best dancer, but that is no excuse for the belittling, nasty remarks coming from the judges. While it may be their job to critique the dancing, I am sure they can do it without the cruel comments that have been hurled at Chaz, Hope, Michael, and others like them.

If it squaks like a penguin, or looks like a round Ewok and she chose to come on National television, all is fair.

First, I do feel sorry for Lacey as she obviously cared and did everything she could to help Chastity/Chaz improve. As far as Chastity/Chaz, I understand wanting to be on the show, but it would have made a lot more sense to lose a significant amount of weight and been really working out for about six months prior to being a contestant. Then the field would have been much more level and maybe some of the bad effects of the hormone shots would either have lessened or become more tolerable.

Many contestants lose a lot of weight and maybe Chaz did as well, but I couldn't tell. There was the one point where her knees were in a lot of pain, which I sympathized with, and could not have helped her dancing one bit. Possibly the ongoing knee pain--which is also a function of weight--was partially the reason for her stiffness.

HIS knees. Don't be so insulting as to call him Chaz and then refer to him as 'her'. That's just rude.
