MISRATA, Libya -- Longtime Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, his son Muatassim and a top aide were buried in an Islamic ceremony at dawn Tuesday in a secret location, with a few relatives and officials in attendance, officials said.

The burial closed the book on Gadhafi's nearly 42-year rule and the 8-month civil war to oust him, but did not silence international calls for an investigation into whether the widely despised tyrant was executed by his captors.

Meanwhile, a government spokesman said an explosion rocked a fuel depot near Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte on Monday and that there were casualties. Col. Ahmed Bani said the blast is being treated as an accident, but that an investigation has been launched.

A human rights researcher, Tirana Hassan, said that while in Sirte on Monday, said she saw 11 people with severe burns arrive at the city's Ibn Sina hospital. Nurses said the injuries were from the blast.

The bodies of Gadhafi, Muatassim and former Defense Minster Abu Bakr Younis were removed overnight from the commercial freezer in Misrata where they'd been on display for four days. They were then buried at dawn Tuesday, according to Ibrahim Beitalmal, a spokesman for the military council in Misrata. Bani also confirmed the burial.

In a text message, Beitalmal said Islamic prayers were read over the bodies and that relatives and members of the local and military councils of Misrata attended the funeral. Beitalmal could not immediately reached by phone Tuesday to provide further details.

On Monday, Beitalmal said the three would be buried in unmarked graves to prevent vandalism. Presumably, the location would also be kept hidden to prevent it from turning into a shrine for Gadhafi loyalists.

International organizations asking to see the burial site would be given access, Beitalmal said.

The three bodies had been held in cold storage in Misrata since the dictator and members of his entourage were captured near his hometown of Sirte on Thursday after their convoy came under attack by NATO. For days, Misratans had lined up to see the bodies, donning surgical masks to cover the stench from the bodies.

Over the weekend, Libya's chief pathologist, Dr. Othman el-Zentani, performed autopsies on the three bodies and also took DNA samples to confirm their identities. El-Zentani has said Gadhafi died from a shot to the head, and said the full report would be released later this week, after he presents his findings to the attorney general.

Gadhafi and Muatassim were captured alive, with some injuries, but died in unclear circumstances later that day.

Responding to mounting international pressure, Libya's interim leaders have promised an investigation to establish whether Gadhafi was killed in an execution-style slaying after being captured alive Thursday by fighters in his hometown of Sirte or whether he died in the crossfire as government officials have suggested. Video footage showed him being beaten and abused by a mob after his capture.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch said there are strong indications that Gadhafi was killed in custody.

Hassan, a researcher for the group, said she spoke Monday to a 30-year-old Sirte resident who had traveled in the convoy that tried to smuggle Gadhafi out of Sirte.

Hassan quoted the woman as saying that Gadhafi did not sustain serious injuries during the NATO strike on the convoy.

The woman said the former Libyan leader and members of his entourage left their vehicle after the attack and took cover for about three hours in an abandoned building. Gadhafi then left the hideout with a small group on foot, and they were captured a short while later, Hassan quoted the woman as saying.

The woman, who had volunteered at a field clinic in Sirte treating wounded Gadhafi loyalists, was released by the revolutionary forces and has returned to Sirte, Hassan said.

I don't understand how his burial site can be a secret if his relatives know. Why would they keep silent? There is much more to this story.

I guess his one son is trying to negotiate a surrender of himslef. As far as destroying his home town,I think everyoner would have sen that coming .Everyone is still trying to find out who ghadafi sold the many weapons he had acumulated while in power. He bought them from the UK and France no less,Great people huh? It's pretty much a given that he sold them to al-quaida and other isurgent groups which was fairly easy for him to do considering that Lybia has to neighboring country's without any borders persay so they can come and go as they please. It does look though as if theirs still going to be trouble in Lybia with those trying to vie for power there

Maybe he was a Patriarch not a Tyrant. The father of modern Libya like Nasser was to Egypt.

This is not the resume of most tyrants:

tyranny ended by anarchy... religion is out of it. Had Hitler died in a time like this he would be all through out every social micro blogging with posts of sympathy or hatred. Let us hope Libya would rise again and learn from the mistakes of the past we do not even have the power to bring back. We should remember that we lived to see 2011 because we saw what Mussolini or Hitler or any other tyrant had done in the past and we sure have learned from it. If we do not learn, for sure we'd be seeing a catastrophic future where in the end of our days we see that "Divided we stand, united we will Fall!" :(

Gaddafi, his son & field leader were probably killed by the rebels who captured them because the libyans were held in a dictatorship from Gaddafi for 42yrs. We all know if Gaddafi would have died several years ago by natural causes, one of his sons would have became heir of his throne. The assistance of NATO helped the rebels gain momentum to force Gaddafi on the run until he was capture. As I stated a couple days ago, "you live by the sword you die by the sword". Gaddafi was too stubborn to surrender so he want out with the consequences of dying like the dictator he became over the past several years. Now it's time for Libya to renounce a new government & regime with democracy for all it's citizens. Pray that Libya & US coalition began with a new light.

Widespread interest in the dead body of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has lead to a entrepreneurial bidding war for his corpse. Several large publicly held companies and multi-national corporations including Sony, Samsung, Westinghouse, Amana, Coca Cola, and Frigidaire have submitted independent proposals to the transitional Libyan government (NTC) and to the city of Misrata where his body is currently decomposing in cold storage. Thousand of people have already lined up to see Gaddafi's bullet riddled body and to take pictures lying next to him on a blood soaked mattress. Seeing a lucrative opportunity, these companies are seeking to take Gaddafi's cadaver on the road for an extended world tour, possibly involving over a dozen countries and 3 different continents. Disney, In an admittedly controversial but creative business venture has also suggested placing Gaddafi in a permanent Disneyland attraction, tentatively called Mad Dog Muammar's Desert Adventure. While Islamic law currently forbids the use of the dead for such purposes and has strict guidelines on the swift burial of the deceased according to Muslim tradition, legal maneuvering by entertainment lawyers representing globally recognized corporate sponsors, Gaddafi's surviving family members and rebels from a coalition of local militia in Misrata are said to be close to hammering out a mutually beneficial agreement. Rumors continued to swirl as recently as today that Gaddafi was unceremoniously buried in a large refrigerator in the desert this morning but a spokesman for Frigidaire claims this was a body double, possibly even Geraldo Rivera.

I do not get it...we go in and get Osama, but no one else is allowed to get Gadaffi? He killed tens of thousands of people, many his own. I believe he was killed by the people that he held captive for 40 years,

"We shall see"

I always think that is just about the most boring and pointless comment that I have seen on this blog.

Yeah. We shall see. Assuming we don't drop into a coma of boredom first.

Or the Earth does not spin out of orbit and crash into the sun.

The sun will rise in the east. And we shall see.

How very deep. I wish I had thought of that.

An investigation about the tyrant's death is non-sense, and a big waste of time because the new government needs to start rebuilding Libya, and not be delay by international groups who want to stick their noses into other people's business. And more thing, showing the tyrant's grave site will only leak the site's location to other people. That's real smart!

Or have you refused yet again to admit that Qaddafi was a thug?

Roles have been reversed in the political theater. It used to be the republicans were stronge on defense and the democrats were supposed to be milk sops...NOW, it's a democratic president doing house cleaning and mop-up in the terrorist world. He tracked down Bin Laden (even though Bush said using special ops was not feasible), then laid him to rest. He tracked down Al-Alawki, and laid him out too. Now, with his new war strategy (of having the UN take more aggressive roles), he has put down Khaddaffi....a Democrat. And on the other side, it's the republicans now crying about, "HE DIDN'T GO IN WITH OUR PERMISSION." 'HE DIDN'T GET BIN LADEN, THE SEALS DID." "THANK GOD FOR THE FRENCH AND THE BRITTISH WHO GOT KHADAFFI." "HE SHOULD HAVE USED OUR FORCES MORE AGGRESSIVELY AND SOONER." Yet, not one American soldier lost his/her life over the Lybian conflict...and no American flags were dragged through the streets. In fact, inspite of the GOP thanking the French and the Brits, and saying that Obama's foreign policy has not worked, the Lybians, for one, are thanking Obama...and saying "LONG LIVE AMERICA." But not one republican has come forth to acknowledge that we are safer under Obama than any other president previously involved in this middle east conflict. And by the way, has anyone seen Herman Cain's new political ad on TV? It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen...is he serious?

"Strong on defense" does not necessitate an interventionist foreign policy.

The United States has had an "interventionist' foreign policy every since World War 1, maybe even long before that. It's alittle late to be railing against our foreign policies now. Were you as focal when we "intervened" in Iraq for supposed WMDS? As the world's leading power, to seat back and allow people like Khaddaffi to say to the world, "I will march into their homes and kill them all in the streets" just doesn't go with the country's world view. We have attacked a country on the pretext of WMDs....so now we attack to save lives...like we did in Kosovo. We are not an isolated entity...we are apart of the world, and the world is apart of us. If they fall...we fall. And if we fall....they will fall. Those are our ties to humanity...for better or worst, we're in it for the long haul. But if you like railing against something, how about railing against the GOP blocking a Jobs bill that will give millions of jobs to Teachers, Firemen and the Police? Not because it's politically practical....but just because............................

The reason you are not safe and never will be is because the pentagon wants the worlds resources. Do you understand the implications of that? Stop reading US news and use the net to get out of the box you are in.

I actually don't read US News as you apparently do. I read several programs (including the internet) since they are the gateway to knowledge. I'm not sure what "box" you think I'm in...but in America, we all have opinions that differ from one to the other. If I obsorb knowledge and come up with my ideas and world view, and you obsorb knowledge and come up with your "box" analogy.....so be it. It costs you nothing...and as they say; "Knowledge is Expensive....and so is Ignorance."

So if the "investigation" shows he was taken alive and then killed....then what ? Will they look up and trial the rebel who fired the gun? This is BS and time to move on...Hes dead....always a problem when we kill dictators....PLease someone, write a manual on the proper was to assasinate Dictators who have murdered their country's citizens....
