Sex Abuse Claims: Vatican Investigates Ealing Abbey In London

Vatican Sex Abuse

By JILL LAWLESS   10/25/11 11:06 AM ET   AP

LONDON -- The Vatican has ordered an inquiry into decades of sexual abuse by clerics at a Benedictine abbey in London, whose former head monk has disappeared while facing allegations of sexual assault.

Ealing Abbey runs St. Benedict's School, a private Catholic institution whose former pupils have made allegations of abuse dating back to the 1960s.

A former headmaster, Father David Pearce, was jailed in 2009 for abusing boys at the school over a 35-year period. He was dubbed the "devil in a dog collar" by one of his victims.

Father Laurence Soper, who was abbot of Ealing between 1991 and 2000, was arrested last year on suspicion of sexual assault. He is the subject of an international manhunt after jumping bail in March.

The Vatican confirmed Tuesday it had launched an investigation, known as an apostolic visitation.

Bishop John Arnold and the Right Rev. Richard Yeo, president of the English Benedictine Congregation, visited Ealing Abbey last month as part of the Vatican inquiry, according to Eddie Tulasiewicz, spokesman for the Catholic diocese of Westminster.

St. Benedict's School is holding its own inquiry into the scandal, led by lawyer Lord Carlile, and his report is due to be published soon.

London's Metropolitan Police said police are trying to trace Soper, the former abbot arrested and bailed last year on suspicion of "historic sexual assault."

Ealing's current abbot, Martin Shipperlee, said earlier this month that in March, Soper "left the monastery in Rome where he had been living to travel to London for an appointment with the police."

"Unfortunately he failed to keep that appointment and we have heard nothing from him since and all efforts to contact him have been without success," Shipperlee said in a statement.

The wide-ranging clergy abuse scandal has shaken the Catholic church, from the Vatican to parishes around the world. Thousands of victims have spoken out about priests who molested children, bishops who covered up for them and Vatican officials who turned a blind eye to the problem for decades.

Britain, where Catholics make up about 10 percent of the population, has been less traumatized than neighboring Ireland, a once-devoutly Catholic nation whose faith has been profoundly shaken by the scale of the abuse. There, judge-led investigations have revealed how tens of thousands of children suffered repeated abuses in workhouse-style residential schools.

Why oh WHY is the Vatican allowed to investigate sexual abuse inside the Catholic Church? How are they not legally obligated to cede control to the police? Seems to me like if this were anyone but the Vatican, there would be quite a lot of reason to suspect obstruction of justice in the investigation. What's to stop them from covering up any evidence they find?

The RC condemns same sex relationships, yet protects male priests who have physical relationships with boys?

It amazes me to see Catholics continuing to shuffle off to mass every Sunday. I can only assume they also continue to support this terrorist organization financially. Isn't there a law against such things in this country or is that false cloak of religion these low life creeps hide behind still protecting them?

If it were not for he amount of money the RC controls, I would have no problem with it. The RC has so much money that it's easy to understand their reluctance to part with the power that money represents. We get angry w/Madoff - how about the RC church? The Church is so politically powerful with so much money, no one can touch them.

Not only do catholic priest rape boys, but they also rape nuns. Then force them to have abortions. One nun had an abortion and later died, and the rapist priest officiated at her requiem mass. One priest got 29 nuns pregnant. Other nuns were forced to take birth control pills

I had an aunt who was a nurse that worked nights at a hospital. Back in the late 50's and early 60's, I remember her talking about nuns being snuck into the hospital via back doors after midnight so they wouldn't been seen. Why ? They were there for an abortion ..... and ..... NO MEDICAL RECORDS WERE EVER KEPT BY THE HOSPITAL regarding these nuns and their surgeries.

Sexual activities involving priests and nuns have been going on for years. The only difference is that today sex is a much more open subject than it was years ago. Media coverage of news is far more immediate and extensive than it used to be and is also worldwide. It isn't anywhere near as easy for the church to cover up the internal sex issues as it has been in the past. Hopefully, it will get more and more difficult for them until they finally do something truly constructive to stop the abuses going on within their walls.

Talk about an organization that needs a remake and administration change from the top down. While their model survived 2000 years, when the paradigm changes, it doesn't matter how good your product was, you are going out of business. The RC Church is worse off than during the reformation years. Not that they are losing to other faiths but they and all faiths are losing the flock in droves. Do you blame people. Bureaucracy. Organized Religion. I don't think this was His plan. Just the plan of men for control.

Another example of the Vatican acting after the police make arrests and not before. And to what end? The police are investigating, what is the Vatican going to do (open the secret files?, Right) All window dressing, as has been the Church's attitude in the past. They still don't get it - the Church is/has been a refuge for sexual misconduct by its priests for decades. It is time for the members (who actually are the Church) to take action and clean up this disaster from top to bottom. They should "get off their knees" and "stand up to" and replace these criminals.

bech it has been a refuge for thieves, liars and scam artists for centuries. It shocked the socks of Martin Luther when he went to Rome and it hasn't really changed.

When it comes to pedophiles, the Catholic Church has operated as protective cult for a hundred years.

Hey Rrrrratzinger....what are you going to tell God when you die and he asks you whether you protected the children or the priests and bishops? Remember, it's not NICE to lie to God.

I've left the Catholic church due to the insane conduct that goes on within it's religion. I never could understand how Catholics could denounce gays and yet it seems they have no problem protecting them within their own house of worship to prey on the young.

Pedophiles are criminals. They are NOT homosexual. Pedophiles are heterosexual.
Religious extremists are intolerant, mostly ignorant.
Gays are simply human, like most of us, gay or straight or bi or whatever ...
09:34 PM on 10/25/2011
Gay is an identity and the godmen who rape kids do not identify as gay. They identify as priests, catholic priests. They are predators of convenience. Rape is a male thing. It is not a gay thing.

Through out history there has been corruption within the Vatican religious leaders are allowed to have so much power and influence on the people who lived to obey by their words when there is to much power given to individuals they have the tendencies to abuse them
05:49 PM on 10/25/2011
So they eventually get around to "investigating" and "making inquiries" about abuse that occurred as much as 40 years ago?

Why not? The alleged victims don't seem to have a problem waiting that long to file their complaints.
